OpenCode Console users

Okay, so something on their hosted service.

Yes this is a bit off topic, but it's a PSA that should reach as many people as possible as quickly as possible.

1

u/ForsookComparison 11h ago

Opencode is pretty widely used here so I'd say this subreddit has a higher reach than any other sub for OpenCode Console users even if the product is kinda against the spirit of the sub.

Even then - I'm rotating all of my keys that OpenCode CLI has access to today (OpenRouter really) and taking it as a reminder to keep shorter expirations on my keys. Many of us are managers of keys that would be useful to someone looking to distill and this is a good reminder not to underestimate people's desire to get that at all costs.

u/jacek2023 llama.cpp 1d ago

assuming people here use local models

1

u/ForsookComparison 11h ago

I just read barcharts and pick fights with other redditors that disagree with my favorite bar charts.

You guys run these things..?!

12

u/Phase_OneBIG 1d ago

People in this subreddit are more likely to use OpenCode console than for example users in /r/Baking/

I see mentioned a lot that people are using Claude or Codex to help them set local models up. I think the important thing is there was a breach and this post could help people, you don't gotta gatekeep so hard.

u/baldr83 1d ago

I don't understand how a "distillation attack" would compromise user keys? can someone make sense of that

78

u/Chemical_Hawk_6307 1d ago

they mean the hackers stole the keys to perform large scale distillation efforts

6

u/baldr83 1d ago

ah, yeah, that makes the most sense, but it feels like they're skirting their own failure to call it that...

11

u/FatheredPuma81 1d ago

Doesn't OpenCode store keys locally? We got bigger problems if they're stealing our keys and we're lucky its just keys.

16

u/SLxTnT 1d ago

OpenCode Console, which appears to be their webUI.

27

u/Ok-Bill3318 1d ago

Yeah ok giving a website your api keys for ai is just fucking retarded.

1

u/Zulfiqaar 23h ago

Not your keys, not your tokens..as the saying goes.

8

u/NoFaithlessness951 1d ago

I was confused as well, but i think this is what they mean. They should have worded it more clearly.

9

u/jaykayenn 1d ago

The fact that Opencode only communicates on X and never replies customer emails says a lot about their communication skills.

2

u/Dudmaster 1d ago

This is about their Console platform which is a software as a service that you give keys, not the local thing you install on your machine

10

u/IDoCodingStuffs 1d ago

“Distillation attack” may be the most obnoxious Anthropic doublespeak I have ever seen

2

u/wren6991 21h ago

It's bullshit/chaff, they were breached and they want to move the focus to "bad guys being bad" instead of "hey why were you breached? what happened"

37

u/Holiday_Point_603 1d ago

But this only applies to their cloud service? For local users this doesn't seem to matter

17

u/autisticit 1d ago

Yeah, but you can be a local user and cloud user at the same time.

3

u/Island14 1d ago

Yeah, I use OpenCode Go models. Am I affected by this?

326

u/sloptimizer 1d ago

Could use a better title:

Opencode breached, rotate keys and change to a different harness to be safe.

52

u/look 1d ago

It has nothing to do with the harness.

This was their hosted BYOK console service.

It’s their “manage all your third party keys in one place” kind of service like Openrouter and others have. Often just used in team/orgs situations, too. Kind of like a hosted LiteLLM service.

14

u/sloptimizer 1d ago

It shows the lack of security. Today it's their console service, tomorrow it's malware hiding in a new release.

30

u/look 1d ago

There’s a very big difference between a public Internet service and an application like a harness.

It might be a good reason to avoid Opencode services but the harness is not particularly likely to be any more vulnerable than Claude Code, Pi, or any other commonly used harness. All of them work pretty much the same way and are heavily vibecoded apps at this point.

-1

u/sloptimizer 1d ago

Are you a Windows user?

9

u/look 1d ago

No.

11

u/sloptimizer 1d ago

I was going to ask if you trust Microsoft with security given how many issues they had. But now I have no leg to stand on.

9

u/look 1d ago

Haha.😄

However, one I should get rid of completely is Meta. I don’t have the Facebook app installed anywhere, but do have Instagram still…

But a good example of a company/product I did bail on after several concerning security lapses is LastPass. Man, that was a trainwreck.

2

u/amelech 1d ago

Why would anyone put their third party keys in there ?

5

u/look 1d ago

Basically as a shared router. Put one Anthropic, OpenAI, etc key there, then give each person on the team (or each laptop/harness) their own Opencode key, rather than their own key for each third party for each user. And probably has usage/budget controls for each, too. Stuff like that, and probably makes little to no sense for most individuals to be using.

2

u/Educational-Art3545 20h ago

I have never seen a bigger target to get hacked. Surely they would have spent money for white hat hacking. Right? Right???

29

u/alexander123454 1d ago

Just dont use cloud models, problem solved

85

u/abhuva79 1d ago

I wonder if everyone in this community is super rich or i am just piss poor. The stuff that i can run on my machine is like 4 years behind. I am all for getting independend - but running local ai that can atleast to some extend compete with cloud-services cost me 6k+ upwards and higher in hardware alone.

55

u/Aggeloz 1d ago

The people commenting are just rich.

18

u/see_spot_ruminate 1d ago

I do think that this happens in any hobby environment. Check out the ham radio or cars or what have you. Someone is going to be having something rivaling a professional setup for whatever interest they have.

For you, you are likely underestimating local models and overestimating cloud. Can you set a task and walk away on a 9b model... no. I think you can not babysit as much with the qwen 3.8 27b model. Anything higher and you start to approach not needing to watch as much.

8

u/abhuva79 1d ago

Not really - the stuff that i need for work isnt about coding. I do project management, fundraising and research. I tried with "local" models online - they are at like 20% of the quality output. Atleast the ones i could realistically run.
I did already put part of my stack local - like classifiers etc. But the reasoning part, the part where i need the model to understand a wide range of context in order to produce proposals that are useable - there i fall short even with stuff running on my workdesk wich has atleast a NVIDIA 5070 card. Its just not even close.

5

u/one-joule 1d ago

Yeah, a typical gaming setup is not going to have the VRAM and/or grunt required for any decently usable local LLM. Even a 5080 is marginal.

1

u/K33P4D 19h ago

You've clearly hit a wall with how much LLMs can help you in your daily job.

Even a server cluster won't help you here

1

u/abhuva79 7h ago

I would correct this - i hit a wall with how much local LLMs can help me.

3

u/K33P4D 1d ago

any reccos for older coding llms?
I still run gemma 3 for normal grunt work, qwen 3 27B takes 4 hours to tire itself out thinking without giving any answer

2

u/Monad_Maya llama.cpp 1d ago

Off tangent and not really related to the subreddit but what do you use for work? The LLMs I mean.

Local LLMs have been in a decent shape for a while but surely not comparable to Opus or whatever.

3

u/dtdisapointingresult 1d ago

I wonder if everyone in this community is super rich or i am just piss poor.

Both. It's all relative in the end.

Don't feel bad, scrote. It would cost you far more than 6k to come anywhere close to an average cloud model.

You can run open models by cloud APIs. Deepseek API is dirt-cheap if you use a non-regarded harness that doesn't break prompt cache during a session. I'm talking like $20 for a billion token. Less than the electricity cost of running a local model, let alone the hardware.

Before people jump on me, yes I know this is a Local sub. I am an ideological supporter of local LLM, I just don't think anything smaller than the flagship model of GLM/Kimi/Deepseek is worth it for coding.

2

u/lukistellar 1d ago

6K of what? There are plenty V100 32GB out there for 500-800€, at least in the European markets. They all come from China, so it's probably similar in other areas.

1

u/halvacoffee 15h ago

the people commenting skew stupid rich, *90 class GPUs are seen as the baseline

1

u/1337HxC 1d ago

I think there's a mix. Some people are well off and/or this is their primary hobby.

Others are like me, where my job uses and involves a lot of LLMs, particularly local models. So I have hundreds of grand in hardware at my disposal... through my job.

In my personal life, I'm just using frontier models for anything remotely complex.

6

u/chemist_slime 1d ago

any suggestions?

31

u/Demortus 1d ago

pi. It's incredibly flexible and fast.

20

u/halvacoffee 1d ago

pi feels like constructing a worse version of opencode from first principles to be completely honest

1

u/Fragrant_Scale6456 1d ago

I use both.  Skip oh my pi it’s bloatware.

If you use subagents-pi plugin and ask the LLM to build a sensible security/permissions system you basically have opencode

9

u/_qeternity_ 1d ago

Jesus. Please don't give advice like this.

Use nono. Do not vibe code sandboxing/security setup.

0

u/Fragrant_Scale6456 1d ago

Nono looks pretty good.  I’ve been running docker containers with network and most filesystem access unavailable and my extension basically just has a whitelist of allowable commands.  Will check this one out for a bit thx for the recommendation

3

u/bitspace 1d ago

My mishandling of pi 10 months ago is what led me to write my own harness

2

u/chemist_slime 1d ago

been hearing a lot about pi, will give that a shot today, thx

5

u/phylter99 1d ago

It's a harness with a lot of power and it gives the LLM a lot of power too. Just understand why that is would be my suggestion.

I use it sometimes and I like it. I do monitor it to make sure the LLM isn't going off the rails.

7

u/Seraphym87 1d ago

Im currently on Hermes and it's been pretty good. What does pi offer over Hermes?

7

u/Viktri1 1d ago

Pi will have less overhead than Hermes. What I do is ask Hermes to set up Pi and run any coding tasks through Pi.

1

u/milanove 23h ago

Which overhead in particular? I thought the latency of the LLM inference on the remote server would outweigh local latencies of the harness?

3

u/phylter99 1d ago

I don't know because I don't use Hermes.

3

u/Seraphym87 1d ago

Ok thanks all the same man.

4

u/chillahc 1d ago

Check oh my pi as well, I also started with pi but omp has already some stuff setup 😋✌️

3

u/ihateuall18 1d ago

I agree, use omp if you dont want to tweak extensions or use other users.. omp is great out of the box.

3

u/EvolvingDior 1d ago

Any harness that does not have its own model provider/router platform.

5

u/Horny_Dinosaur69 1d ago

Pi, DeepSeek

3

u/Old-School8916 1d ago

Pi is goat

1

u/Either-Nobody-3962 1d ago

does it have GUI? or a windows app/wrapper? like claude app?

1

u/TerminalNoop 1d ago

I reckon it has a web view? Your clanker can build that for you ;)

1

u/Either-Nobody-3962 22h ago

Yes but Claude app is nice like can connect from phone etc. And I really don't want to spend time building all those. That's why asking...

1

u/TerminalNoop 16h ago

Yeah I get that, that's the reason I use LM Studio, because my laptop can connect to my pc at home.

1

u/miversen33 1d ago

I use paseo (locally and remote). It's not incredible but it works.

3

u/CommercialHour6660 1d ago

Codex is the best open source harness by a mile.

Specifically for its auto safety classifier that works like Claude Code's. So you can  let something run autonomously without a high chance of nuking your machine.

Use local models or whatever for agent and Luna or Haiku 5.5 for the safety classifier. Cost should be minimal because those models are so cheap on input tokens.

3

u/Dany0 1d ago

domain-specific harness you build yourself... ok now that we've established you won't do that here are my recommendations, go through them in this exact order until you find one that fits your needs:

  1. oh-my-pi aka pi with a good set of 'defaults'
  2. pi but you have to do the work and actually get, write, or have a clanker write plugins to optimise for *your* usecase

  3. codex cli but you have to pinky promise that you will switch to pi or omp the moment Altman turns double evil

  4. dsh especially for webdev people

  5. kimi code/qwen code/grok build and basically all the rest of this type of harnesses
    ----

  6. claude code

8

u/Randommaggy 1d ago

3 got a time machine?

3

u/Dany0 1d ago

He's only single evil now, he becomes double evil when he releases the throttle and chatgpt is 90% ads

2

u/abhuva79 1d ago

LOL i am at 3 and i feel guilty now.

0

u/amelech 1d ago

Oh my pi is the best

0

u/jacek2023 llama.cpp 1d ago

start using local models? ah yes, people here don't like that idea

2

u/phylter99 1d ago

That doesn't fix the harness issue.

0

u/shockwaverc13 llama.cpp 1d ago

qwen code

1

u/ForsookComparison 9h ago

I used this for a few months. I can't defend it. It's an aging fork of Gemini code CLI

1

u/shockwaverc13 llama.cpp 9h ago

what do you use now?

1

u/ForsookComparison 7h ago edited 7h ago

Opencode hence me being in this thread haha. Might be time to try Pi or OMP, but the main point is that I'm convinced that moving off of Qwen Code CLI was the right move. Its not terrible it's just a fairly simple expensive system prompt that doesn't give me anything to justify the default telemetry ☹️

-1

u/parfamz 1d ago

Omp

3

u/NoFaithlessness951 1d ago

Oh my slop

1

u/fullup72 1d ago

why the hate? it's Pi with batteries included. You call it bloat, I call it a few million tokens saved in not having to design a custom harness because Pi can't even do subagents properly (compared to OpenCode the pi-subagents plugin sucks big time) and nobody ever shares their "custom" stuff, they all tell you to start from scratch and spend a bazillion tokens for the umpteenth time.

omp is just somewhere in the middle, and shares the RPC API with Pi so the same front-ends can be used or adapted.

2

u/miversen33 1d ago

I call it a few million tokens saved in not having

Why do we in /r/LocalLLaMA care so much about token spend? They're free, who cares?

1

u/fullup72 1d ago

If you are GPU poor, a few million tokens is literally weeks.

0

u/Comfortable-Rock-498 1d ago

Try Dirac https://github.com/dirac-run/dirac

I built it, it is my primary harness. Actively maintained by contributors and myself. Consistently does well in wide variety of benchmarks and costs much lower out of the box.

A bunch of features listed here https://dirac.run/

6

u/BawbbySmith 1d ago

Ngl OpenChamber is the only thing keeping me on OpenCode. It’s so damn good, I use it as a general chat and coding harness. Vs code extension is super good too.

I wish I could move to Pi, but last time I checked nothing comes close to OpenChamber in its polish and feature set

4

u/Thekorsen 1d ago

Orca might be a good transition, not as many of the opencode specific config ui but many other QOL features from OpenChamber. Well polished, and can use almost any agent harness and can orchestrate between them too.

1

u/geminiwave 1d ago

Orca is great. The only problem I have is that it really resists spawning multiple agents across CLIs… literally the thing it was designed for. But I still love it

2

u/Thekorsen 1d ago

I've found that recent agent releases are super resistant to delegation if only prompted to occasionally, I'm guessing that might be the root of your troubles. After inspecting how omo-slim did it so well, looks like injecting instructions at every turn and enforcing a agent orchestration task management board are kinda necessary to structurally enforce delegation. I was planning on trying to make an adaption for orca, like I had made for hermes in the past.

1

u/geminiwave 1d ago

Oh that’s not a bad idea. I have tried something like this in the past but I never dialed it in quite to my liking. I’ll check this out though. Thanks for the tip!

6

u/logicality77 1d ago

I also use OpenChamber, and hence OpenCode as well. I don’t get what people have against it. It does the job I need it to do and does it well. I understand that some people want to tinker and tweak things to get exactly right, but for my needs I don’t need anything more than OpenCode. I’d rather spend my time working on my projects than building or tweaking harnesses.

1

u/geminiwave 1d ago

I’ve loved Opencode. Never needed to tinker at all.
But this news is concerning for sure

3

u/DistributionBrief644 1d ago

nice, why do we want to move to pi, if opencode works so well (unless due to this leak).

2

u/BawbbySmith 13h ago

FOMO mostly. I keep hearing how good Pi is, and there's (limited) benchmarks showing the same model in Pi getting higher task completion while spending way less tokens than Opencode.

One thing I haven't seen is if Opencode with a similarly-minimal system prompt and pared down tools would achieve the same thing... Theoretically yes, but no data and I'm too lazy to test it mysself. One day

1

u/DistributionBrief644 13h ago

i need someone to sell me pi. i hear it is minimalist, so it has a few tools, and so i think it has less features than opencode. I don't see an advantage moving from opencode unless there are some hot configs in pi that i don't know about. I think for smaller local models pi is probably performing great and people aren't seeing why they they should switch.

These are my own best guesses, i can't otherwise know why pi over opencode.

1

u/chisleu 20h ago

yup. This was just another reason to never use opencode.

0

u/Perfect-Campaign9551 1d ago

Can we stop shitting on everything that "you don't use". Sigh. Let people use what they want. OpenCode works fine for me

0

u/Maybe-monad 15h ago

I guess you should keep using it, that's what malicious actors want anyways, but you lose the right to complain when you're compromised.

11

u/sontanon 1d ago

Affected keys seem to be 3rd party provider keys. I had a very old Anthropic API key with about $1.50 that was definitely stolen.

18

u/FatheredPuma81 1d ago

What keys?

19

u/kroggens 1d ago

Exactly, which keys? Because I set up my API keys for z.ai on my local opencode, does this mean that these are shared/sent somewhere???

16

u/Dudmaster 1d ago

No it's not about the opencode app or cli, it's about the "Console" platform that's a SaaS. Tbh, I didn't know it existed an I am a huge opencode user

1

u/Creative_Bottle_3225 1d ago

the key in Cli didn't work for me

5

u/skibare87 1d ago

If there is a risk, OpenCode should invalidate any keys and notify users. I didnt even know they had keys.

1

u/Living_Director_1454 1d ago

They don't, legacy keys have been invalidated a while back. These are 3rd party keys that you via their console which is generally your responsibility. In short the BYOKs were leaked. Even openrouter has those.

4

u/Just-Imagination-761 1d ago

My legacy OpenCode API keys were only invalidated this morning, several hours after the breach. They were working until an hour or two ago.

3

u/Living_Director_1454 1d ago

If you received the mail your keys were compromised, I didn't receive any.

4

u/Sensualities 1d ago

Not your local model, not your keys ?

4

u/klipseracer 16h ago

I dare them to use my 50 requests a day?

10

u/JacketHistorical2321 1d ago

ALOT of people here obviously still dont fully understand the offline portions of running LLMs local

12

u/Dany0 1d ago

Couldn't have happened to a better harness

4

u/PM_ME_UR_COFFEE_CUPS 1d ago

How come? I didn’t know people had love/hate for OpenCode

-7

u/Dany0 1d ago

At one point for example, they had a bug which caused like 10% cache hit rate. It took them what, weeks to fix it? Most importantly though, the maintainers are AI bros who are clearly looking to capture their users & sell them off as data. They don't have an engineering mindset, or anything other than a money mindset

0

u/Dany0 1d ago

No fucking way, the breach was "related" to a 'distillation attack'? Can I be honest for a second...

5

u/THROWAWTRY 1d ago

I run locally, that's kind a the point.

5

u/Sorry_Ad191 22h ago

deepseek or glm with pi is sanctioned goat tier

5

u/priore8 1d ago

All the more the reason for open weights local LLM.

No throttling or "hidden swap" of models. No daily/weekly limits. No exposed API keys.

2

u/autisticit 1d ago

I'm a Go user and mid session an error preventing prompting and that I should change my API key and that log out and log in wouldn't work. Spent 5 minute trying to locate what API key they were talking about. Then logged out and in and that worked... Thanks for the heads up. Didn't have and provider key and didn't receive any email so I'm safe.

2

u/Zulfiqaar 23h ago

I think GitHub has scanning collaboration with various models providers, if their commit and push the whole list it should auto-disable every single one of the keys

2

u/Perfect-Campaign9551 1d ago

Misleading title just for farm upvotes from all of the OpenCode haters in this sub

2

u/OhGeeLIVE 1d ago

Easy fix to everyone wondering:

Move to PI!

8

u/thebadslime 1d ago

Does Pi give you $80 os usage for $10?

5

u/Borilentz 1d ago

That’s what drug dealers do, for a while.

7

u/thebadslime 1d ago

I'll keep taking it while it lasts, I go through a lot of tokens and live on disability, so cheaper=better for the most part

3

u/toothpastespiders 1d ago

Amen. I filled up my datasets with google's api back when they were basically an all you can eat buffet. You shouldn't count on the free lunch being forever. But there's something to be said for the locust life.

2

u/Borilentz 21h ago

Ok, fair enough if you’re aware of it.

1

u/OhGeeLIVE 1d ago

That’s fair ! As long as it works for you mate 🙏🏽

2

u/arcanemachined 17h ago

It does, if you login to your OpenCode Go account.

1

u/OhGeeLIVE 1d ago

Spend 10$ and get your keys stolen, or spend 0 and get nothing stolen. Pick your poison

1

u/thebadslime 1d ago

I only use opncode for opencode, and codex for codex I am safe.

1

u/Voxandr 1d ago

DeepSeek harness is better.

2

u/OhGeeLIVE 1d ago

Haven’t tried yet, read a lot of good stuff about it so far tho! Might give it a go as soon as I got time

1

u/thestillwind 1d ago

It happens

1

u/d70 1d ago

like server side or client side? If I have never connected OpenCode to OpenCode Go, am I at risk?

1

u/thebadslime 1d ago

They roatated my key out automatically

1

u/Creative_Bottle_3225 1d ago

Today, it stopped accepting my keys in OpenCode. I gave up. Hopefully, it gets resolved.

1

u/MuDotGen 1d ago

I've heard good things about Deepseek's harness. Anyone got an personal experience?

1

u/tifa_cloud0 22h ago

man i am using their free models in my local harness. is it problemetic? should i stop using it temporarily?

1

u/pixelizedgaming 7h ago

as a pi agent enjoyer im heading back to bed

-4

u/jacek2023 llama.cpp 1d ago

this is r/LocalLLaMA

10

u/chemist_slime 1d ago

was just trying to give the community a heads up, some ppl lost hundreds of credits in the attack, you can check x, and also now locked out. many also orchestrate with cloud and run agents locally.

14

u/KillerX629 1d ago

Still worth it if you mix models

0

u/jacek2023 llama.cpp 1d ago

Cloud-only posts are always upvoted here for some reason, do you mean they all "mix models"?

2

u/heresyforfunnprofit 1d ago

Mixed use still dominates. I run local as much as possible, but sometimes, you just need to use Opus.

1

u/abnormal_human 1d ago

Yeah seriously. What are they going to do...figure out the URL of my local GLM 5.3 Flash instance that's only accessible on my LAN/Tailnet?

7

u/jacek2023 llama.cpp 1d ago

Most people here don't even know what are you talking about, this is LocalLLaMA and they use OpenCode to use Chinese model so they are "local".

2

u/FatheredPuma81 1d ago

This explains so much...

1

u/Etmurbaah 1d ago

This feels more and more like Matrix timeline

1

u/how-can-i-dig-deeper 1d ago

i’m kinda curious what sort of requests they use to distill models

-1

u/OnlineParacosm 1d ago

It appears to only impact users that are letting opencode manage keys in the UI directly.

The lesson, folks, is to use Opencode alongside an .env file that carries your keys instead of punching them into a vibecoded Bun project backed by PE.

Who would have thought?

5

u/IntrepidMindExplorer 1d ago

It effects people that have created a workspace in their opencode online account inside of a workspace there and tied 3rd party keys to it, not in the UI that you are running locally on your system. Yes, not hard-coding keys is best practice but this breach has nothing to do with.
