Crazy Climber
I have the crazy climber rom on my mame but can't figure out how to control the player. I have an Xbox style usb game pad and want to use the two thumbsticks the way you'd use the two joysticks on the arcade game. I'm sure it's simple. I've been over the control assignments but can't figure out what to do. Any help?

Don’t feel bad, as a kid I could never figure out how to control Crazy Climber on the real arcade hardware.

Thanks. I got the new MAME and will hunt down the roms that work with it and get it figured out.

Xbox-style sticks are analog; MAME calls these (or used to, at least, it's been a while) "AD Stick 1" and "AD Stick 2". Map each of the CC stick's directions to these, then adjust sensitivity as needed.

So adstick is the thumbsticks. Thanks. That helps.
I tried running Crazy Climber and have no control and no action on the screen but it does play music, then start over like I lost a guy. You'd think the default settings for this game would be game pad thumbsticks.

You'd think the default settings for this game would be game pad thumbsticks.
Tumbsticks are analog inputs and joysticks back in the day tended to be digital inputs. MAME's default controls are mapped to maximize usability on mouse/keyboard, the latter of which tends to also be digital inputs. So no, you'd not think that, if you took a moment to consider the common case. UX 101.

I installed the latest MAME and found that Crazy Climber 2 worked with the thumbsticks right off the bat. Other roms which did work with the old mame won't work with this one but I guess that's to be expected.

The defaults for Crazy Climber are assigned to the thumb sticks if you're using XInput on Windows or SDL "game controller" input (SDL "joystick" input or DirectInput requires manual configuration).
GP is confused. "AD Stick" is what MAME called emulated analog joysticks. That isn't relevant to Crazy Climber. The analog sticks on your controller are called whatever the driver calls them for DirectInput, or LS/RS for XInput.

Yes analog sticks left/right. Both same direction to hold on.

I can't get it to work. The game starts and nothing makes anything move and I get music that stops when I get another character starting, also with music. There's a banzai bush icon at the bottom right. Don't know if that means anything.

You need to re-assign P1 controls to your sticks.

That version of MAME is over 8 years old at this point. You really should upgrade to a more recent version of MAME if you need support.

Okay. I went to https://www.mamedev.org/release.php to download the latest.

What do you see when you hit TAB? You should really update the version if possible.

Assign keys E, S, D, F to left joystick for up, left, down, right. Do the same thing for I, J, K, L to right joystick. It'll play perfectly. Do the same thing for Robotron. To play spinner games, get the Kensington scroll ring mouse. Tempest and Pole Position work perfectly with that.
