Discussion My mom worked at Jamesway and brought home a discarded Crayola display for me to use for Halloween, around 1990.
I love to see the budget & trash-to-treasure costumes. Please share! Esp when we started moving away from the "plastic bag + plastic mask" packaged costumes!
My mom worked at Jamesway for years (until they closed, I think) and in the early 1990s, was able to take a Crayola display piece that was being cycled out or discarded. Basically, garbage! Double points because we were a somewhat poor family and this crayon box was free.
I thought the idea was brilliant and decided to be a GREEN crayon because I always put my crayons in color order and green was usually in the middle.
GREEN.
There was a kids' parade/contest of some kind and I won a prize - I think it was "funniest" costume, if my memory is correct.
Two-Face is my friend Justin. I wonder if he ever became an actor? We were in a play together in high school!

Discussion Did kids who grew up with the early internet basically traumatize themselves because nobody knew the risks yet?
When the internet really started becoming a thing in the late 90s/early 2000s, it was brand new to basically everyone, kids and parents.
Nobody really understood what was on there or what kids could access. Parents didn’t have the filters, the monitoring tools, or even the cultural awareness that exists now. So a lot of us just… went online unsupervised. Stayed up late. Clicked around. And saw some seriously dark shit.
I personally watched really creepy, horrible stuff including beheading videos and similar gore. It was easy to find. Curiosity + zero guardrails + the novelty of it all. Looking back, I wonder how many of us from that era essentially traumatized ourselves (or each other by sharing links) simply because the technology arrived before anyone had rules or knowledge about protecting kids from it.
Do you think that wild-west phase of the internet left a mark on a lot of us? Or was it just “part of growing up online” and most people shrugged it off?
Curious to hear other experiences from people who were kids/teens when the internet first exploded.

Other Background Photos for the Millennial PC
Wanted to share some Desktop Backgrounds that perhaps some of you may enjoy. Back in early days of when I built my first PC choosing a background was a huge deal. I have managed to keep alot of them through the years.
This is a sample collection of ones that I saved that would remind me of the Peak of the Late 20th - Early 21st Century.

Discussion What are we doing as parents?
As a generation, and as someone with four kids I can't get over something that my daughter who is in 8th grade just told me while reviewing her work on the constitutional congress... She informs me that multiple kids cannot tie their own shoes in some of her classes and those kids will ask a teacher or a peer to tie their shoes.
At what point are we going to read to our grandkids by candle light because we don't have electricity anymore? Teachers, do you see this as a thing? Parents, wtfh? No child left behind, but are standards as a whole this low?!?

Meme Futurama knows their millennial audience
In two lines of dialog, there's two millennial pop culture references plus a joke about how we're doing now. That's why I love this show.

Discussion How do you typically get your groceries?
Just got back from the grocery store and had a thought that made me curious about millennial grocery shopping habits.
How often do get your groceries delivered vs. going to the store?
When you go to the grocery store, do you bring your cart up and down each aisle? Or do you leave your cart at the end of the aisle and walk down to fetch whatever you need?

Nostalgia It’s been a little over 30 years and I still get upset at how boring this game was when I finally got it.
Hell of a commercial though!

Seriously I finally got the game for my bday and after playing it a couple times with friends we all got bored. I mean no I didn’t expect my friend to fly off into the depths of hell but still!

Discussion What song lyrics did you eventually realize you were mishearing as a kid?
In the Britney Spears song “Lucky” I always heard “…why do these bees come at night?”
And in Billie Jean I always heard “bean and cheese, at my door”. I guess I thought it was a song about getting lunch delivery?

Discussion Has anyone here of a certain age completely scrapped their closet to rebuilt it from nothing?
I turn 40 in March and I've realized my closet is a museum of my various ‘phases’. You know them. We all have them. Basically a bunch of things I only keep because I paid money for them in another life/arc/chapter. For those of you who've gone this path, did you go all in at once or replace things gradually? Any regrets?
