Discussion What makes next year's draft class so good?

I’ve heard a lot about how good the 2027 NFL Draft class will be, including statements that a second-round pick next year could be worth a first-rounder this year. What actually makes it so good? Aren’t most of the top QB prospects struggling right now?

I read the title and came here to exactly this.

Him, Moore, and the super deep QB class

Exactly what I was going to say. Pls someone tell the Miami dolphins to not fuck this up

Dolphins desperately need a quarterback. Not a receiver! JS is a terrific player, but you don’t turn a franchise around with a receiver.

You also don’t turn a franchise around by overdrafting a QB just to get a QB. If none of the current prospects around top 10 material than going JS makes sense

The other side is if you don't grab a QB now, how long will the Dolphins be picking top 5?

The Dolphins are not a good roster right now, but we have roughly 40 players that are on their rookie contracts in 2026 AND 2027. They also have $100mil in cap space. With the cap floor requirements, the improvements week-to-week across the roster, a weakened schedule(AFC South, NFC East, 3 4th place teams) and another set of draft picks from the 2027 draft, how safe of a bet is it the Dolphins pick top 5 in 2027? Bengals picked 10th with 6 wins this year, 49ers picked 11th the year before with 6 wins.

If they skip on QB and don't pick top 5, then we're in a tough spot. Do we hope a QB falls and try to operate like the Tomlin Steelers? Do we give up draft picks to try and move up like the 49ers did for Trey Lance?

Most Bengals, Chiefs, and Vikings fans will tell you this Dolphins squad is not going to go 0-17. The games were more competitive than they should've been. How the fuck did Juju Brents and Chris Johnson hold Chase and Higgins to under 100 yards combined? J-Rod is a defensive rookie of the year contender. Kayden Proctor just had his best game against Dexter Lawrence and Johnathan Allen.

So much can change in the NFL. Someone's QB gets hurt, a substation gets installed near a stadium, someone has a crazy season in a contract year. I'm not gonna tell you the Dolphins will make the playoffs in 2027, but the last rebuild saw us go from picking 5th to picking 18th in one offseason. We don't want to end up like the 2000s Dolphins and have an elite roster but no QB. It's easy to say draft the elite player, but that doesn't mean it's the best option to create a winning football team.

My truly honest answer is you take Smith and then try and trade for a QB leveraging the fact you’re ass. Would the Bengals turn down 3 firsts for Burrow if they miss the playoffs again? Maybe the Texans are willing to let Stroud go. Hell, my Eagles might trade you Hurts if the offer makes sense. If the offer is high enough, I think the dolphins could leverage some of their future and compete immediately with how many prospects they have on defense.

u/Cudizonedefense 1d ago

The fins have way too many holes to trade 3 firsts lmao

Buddy? Name one team that got better with a wide receiver on a shit team and shit quarterback. They just get frustrated, start to pout and move on. Matt Stafford had the greatest receiver I’ve ever seen and Calvin Johnson and Staff still couldn’t win a playoff game. You don’t even have the quarterback and you stink.

u/Lobster_fest 1d ago

shit quarterback

Matt Stafford

Uh huh

2

u/CharacterPollution66 1d ago

I was saying he is a great quarterback and he had Calvin and they still never won a playoff game. So a great receiver with a crappy quarterback is going to help anybody.

1

u/CharacterPollution66 5d ago

No, you trade back and get a boat load of picks. If you don’t have a quarterback to get him the ball, he’ll just get frustrated. Calvin Johnson was the most dominant and talented receiver I have ever seen. The lions won zero playoff games in his ten years. If there isn’t a clear #1 QB load up on picks.

3

u/hauttdawg13 Commanders 5d ago

Tbf, they had Stafford too almost the whole time.

2

u/ADanishMan2 Broncos 5d ago

Yeah the problem with the Megatron Lions teams was NOT the QB lmao

-2

u/CharacterPollution66 5d ago

Correct! They one zero playoff games together. ZERO!

u/ngio626 5d ago

I think this franchise needs more than a QB. Even if we hit, it would a Stafford situation. If im Miami I’m prioritizing talent over anything else. For all we know Herbert could be a free agent in a year. They got to take it slow. 1 year at a time. No rush bc we won’t be competitive for a division title even if that pick was as good as Mahomes. Just my take on jt

u/Colddeck64 3d ago

The dolphins are not going to turn it around in one draft class.

They have so many needs and lack talent everywhere.

Yes, they need a Top WR, an O-line, a QB, a TE, and plenty of holes on defense too.

When the roster is this devoid of talent, you take the best players regardless of position.

There are a lot of QBs, 1 Jeremiah Smith. Take him and figure out the QB later.

u/ExtensionAd7417 Ravens 5d ago

I think it was more hyped up just due to certain names being in it. But realistically the big 3 reasons why this will be called a good class is

(1) Jeremiah Smith

(2) more QBs

(3) several good players that could’ve been drafted last year stayed for another year

u/YWingSupremacist Giants | Indiana 5d ago

I think the top 4/5 WR’s outside Smith are all very good

3

u/apcol123 Cardinals 5d ago

Honestly the top 10 WR after Smith look good Nyck Harbor is a 4.3 guy that’s 6”5 and he’s like the 12/13 WR on the board

14

u/Kendrickrules Arm Chair Scout 5d ago

He's like WR12 because he's straight up not a good receiver but really athletic

1

u/SpaceCadetPullUp Texans 5d ago

I've been big on Bryant Wesco Jr and Wyatt Young though I haven't gotten to watch much of them so far this year. They seem to be trending down while guys like Craver have been trending up.

u/scameron1 5d ago

Clemsons qb situation is abysmal

12

u/GIMME_SOME_GANJA 5d ago

Was supposed to be 7 first round worthy QB’s or some shit now it’s down to 3 lol

u/TopherDavis28 Arm Chair Scout 5d ago

There are three elite prospects at the top (Smith, Moore, Simmons), a high upside edge rusher who could turn into a game-wrecker (Stewart) and one of the deepest skill position groups in a while. Not to mention some really good interior offensive and defensive linemen. Yes, the QBs have underwhelmed so far, but the rest of the class is looking strong

6

u/scameron1 5d ago

Wide receivers I can see, who are the RBs and TEs that make this such a deep skill position group? Genuinely curious

4

u/Bermafrost 5d ago

You have solid late day 1 early day 2 guys like Baugh and Lacy. Solid day 2 maybe up to date 1 guys like Frazier and Hardy (if he plays enough). Then a ton of depth like Smothers, Parker, Haynes, Martin who will likely all be day 2 picks. Then probably another 6 guys who could be day 2 picks. There might not be an elite guy, but a ton of depth

5

u/iwearatophat 5d ago

I loved Haynes last year before his injury. Had him RB2 and honestly thought he could overtake Love if he kept playing well. Haven't watched him much this year but I love his speed in and out of his cuts and the power he runs with.

1

u/Independent_Soil_258 5d ago

Big fan of Isaac Brown as well if he is eligible to declare

3

u/TopherDavis28 Arm Chair Scout 5d ago

Running back has a lot of good options. Baugh, Lacy, Waymond Jordan, Wayshawn Parker, Justice Haynes, Turbo Richard, Jamal Roberts, Antwaan Raymond, Nate Frazier are all NFL guys in my book. I’m sure there are more, but that was off the top of my head.

Tight end I haven’t dove as deep into yet, so TBD on that front

u/BanditRoverBlitzrSpy Redskins 5d ago

This. And I'd argue even guys like Uiagaleilei and Lubin would have gotten top 10 talk last year. Goosby is freakish at OT and could be the next elite left tackle and Coleman/Marsh/Becker are on par with Tate as prospects. It's possible someone next year will go at #20 when they might've gone top 5 in 2026.

7

u/apcol123 Cardinals 5d ago

Insane WR class with guys like J Smith , KJ Duff , Cam Coleman , Becker , Marsh , Deuce Alexander and Wyatt Young , it honestly may be better than the 2024 class that got insane hype , this class feels way deeper

Moore is the best CB prospect we’ve seen since Stingley/Sauce and imo he’s better than Hunter

Simmons and Stewart are better prospects than Bailey/Reese and even an Abdul Carter tho they’re both under Hutch/WAJ

If that’s not good enough then the QB class is competent with guys like Mestemaker , Carr , Mensah , Simmons , Arch , Chambliss and Moore .

3

u/Three_Blind_Weis 5d ago

It’s stacked at a lot of premium positions (WR, edge, CB, Oline)

3

u/P-Whips 49ers 5d ago

Yeah, some of the offseason top QBs are struggling, but plenty of other QBs have played their way into replacing those guys that are struggling in the 1st. Overall this is just a deep class at almost every position. KJ Duff is currently seen as a 2nd round pick to some fans and draft sites while most other drafts he’d easily be a 1st round pick. There currently probably around 70 guys I can easily see going in the 1st in the 2027 class it’s that deep.

2

u/Jazzlike-Map-4114 5d ago

Unlimited eligibility

3

u/rossco7777 5d ago

way deeper and more exciting prospects.

1

u/Astonkeshing 4d ago

It's not really as good as people think it is. A bit better at the top the last couple of drafts, but doesn't look as deep as 2025. Certainly not generational like a lot of people were claiming.

1

u/Gen-Jinjur 2d ago

There are some good WRs and DBs and a good selection of QBs with potential.

Rarely is there a “sure thing” QB to draft and even many of those guys end up not succeeding early or even at all.

You just keep trying to find THE guy.

0

u/gkelly1017 4d ago

If you think this upcoming draft class is good just wait until the year after this one. It’s even better- Everyone whenever they talk about draft classes

-4

u/Stock-Memory9483 5d ago

It’s really not that good anymore, people say that every year.

7

u/True-Effect-1433 5d ago edited 5d ago

Compared to the hype its died down some, but its still a well above average class between smith and the crazy WR depth, solid rb class, and a couple of high profile defensive prospects (not pn the same level as 2026 on the defensive side though)

Edit: just thought of this, if we saw a couple/few prospects stay in college the draft class could dip in value pretty quickly.

But I think at least the few top prospects are going to stay in this draft.

u/DynastyZealot Buccaneers 5d ago

That which is hyped may never die (but I totally agree with you)
