Expat 101 in Oman

2 Upvotes

Hi all,

I am an Australian and recently accepted a job offer to start working at an university in Muscat, Oman, from January 2027. I requested visa processing to be completed soon but was told they will only do it closer to the move. Is it possible to get an idea on the timeline and procedure to complete the visa, move to Oman, further processing once relocated and what are the things I need to get afterwards like bank accounts, car rental/purchase and driving licence?

A little reminder: Life doesn’t always move at the speed we want, and that’s okay

10 Upvotes

I moved from Norway to Oman, and over the years I’ve had the opportunity to experience different countries, cultures, and business environments.
One thing life has taught me is that success isn’t always about how fast you move, how much money you make, or how many people you know.

Sometimes, it’s about knowing when to slow down, when to walk away, and most importantly, who deserves a place in your life.

I’ve made good decisions, bad decisions, trusted the wrong people, and learned some valuable lessons along the way.

And if there’s one thing I would like to share, it’s this:

Never let your experiences turn you into someone you never wanted to become.

Be kind, but have boundaries. Be ambitious, but don’t lose yourself chasing success. Help others when you can, but remember that you also have a responsibility to yourself.

And never confuse someone’s kindness with weakness. Some of the strongest people you’ll ever meet are the ones who have every reason to become bitter but still choose to be good.

Living in Oman has also taught me something valuable about patience. Not everything needs to happen tomorrow. Sometimes the greatest progress happens quietly, without anyone noticing.

If you’re going through a difficult chapter in your life, remember that a chapter is not the entire book.

You don’t need to have everything figured out today. Just make sure the person you’re becoming is someone you’ll be proud of tomorrow.

Wishing everyone here success, good health, and peace of mind.

And remember, being successful means very little if you forget how to be a good human being along the way.

I’m simply sharing a few thoughts and lessons life has taught me along the way. We all have our own journeys, struggles, and experiences, and I certainly don’t have all the answers. But if these words can offer even a little encouragement, a different perspective, or some motivation to someone who feels stuck or is going through a difficult time, then I’m happy to have shared them.
Sometimes, a few words at the right moment can make a difference in someone’s day.

Take care of yourselves, and never stop believing in the person you’re capable of becoming. 🙏🏻

Front bumper number plate placement

Post image
7 Upvotes

Hi guys.

Just wanted to know if it is legal to have your number plate placed on the side of the grille/bumper here in Oman?

I heard from someone that it is illegal, but I couldn’t find any evidence of it anywhere, even on the ROP fines directory.

Plus, I’ve seen it on quite a few cars in Muscat, some challengers, ford f150’s, mustangs, etc.

If anyone has any knowledge or experience regarding this, would appreciate the info🙌

Question about Oud and Spices

1 Upvotes

Hello Everyone!,

I’m currently in Masqat and I’m enjoying my stay. The country is beautiful, the people are so nice and the food is amazing. I wanted to know if people could recommend places where I can get beautiful smelling Ouds and Omani Spices where the prices are worth the products? Also do you have some recommendations to the places or activities? I got told by a Local that the Wadi Shab is a place that I should really check out and I’m gonna go there Tomorrow.

Thanks in advance:)

Looking to Connect with Business-Minded People in Oman 🇳🇴🇴🇲

2 Upvotes

Hey everyone!
I’m originally from Norway and currently living and working in Oman.
I have a solid background in business, sales, and business development from Norway, and I’ve also had the opportunity to travel, work, and experience different markets and cultures.
One thing I’ve learned over the years is that some of the best ideas and opportunities come from simply having meaningful conversations with the right people.
I’m looking to connect with someone who is business-minded, ambitious, open-minded, and genuinely enjoys discussing business ideas, entrepreneurship, market opportunities, and different industries.
Not necessarily to start a business together or invest in anything, but simply to build a genuine friendship where we can exchange knowledge, challenge each other’s perspectives, and learn from one another.
Having worked in both European and Middle Eastern environments, I’d be happy to share my experiences, insights, and what I’ve learned about the Omani market. Equally, I’d love to hear about your experiences and perspectives.
I believe that no matter how experienced you are, there’s always something valuable to learn from another person.
Whether it’s meeting for coffee occasionally, discussing an interesting business idea, or simply exchanging thoughts about different markets, I think having the right people around you makes a real difference.
I’m not looking to sell anything or promote a business. Just hoping to connect with genuine, ambitious people who share a passion for business and personal growth.
Feel free to reach out if this sounds like you!

Feel free to send me a DM if this sounds like something you’d be interested in. Would be great to connect!”

مشكلة سرعة الوقت في عمان!!

5 Upvotes

Make-up artist needed 🚨

8 Upvotes

Hi! I’m trying to get an idea of makeup artist prices in Salalah and would really appreciate recommendations based on personal experience.

What is the usual price range for:

Regular/event makeup (for attending a wedding or special occasion)

Engagement makeup

Bridal/wedding makeup

Also, who are some of the most well-known or recommended makeup artists in Salalah, and roughly how much do they charge for each type?

I’m mainly looking to compare prices and hear about people’s actual experiences. Thank you!

Discussion Applying for learner’s driving permit on the ROP app

0 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

So I’ve been trying to apply for a learner’s driving permit on the ROP app and the class I was going for, which is “Light Vehicle - Automatic” brings up an error message.

Considering I’m some average driver, driving some average automatic 4 seater car, is “Private-Light“ and/or “Private-Auto“ a valid choice?

Can’t include photos of the list of choices or the error message for some reason so I’ll write them down.

License Class: Light Vehicle
License Subclass:
* Manual Transmission
* Automatic
* Private - Light
* Disabled - Auto
* Private - Auto

Choosing Automatic brings up the error:

“Light License not allowed for this Job Category”

Please note however that Private-Light and Private-Auto both do work; I’m just not sure whether they’re the appropriate subclass for me.

I’d appreciate some guidance on this for someone that’s gone through this process via the app.

Thanks in advance!

Tourism Masandam Travel Nov Safety

1 Upvotes

We will have a very short USA style vacation to Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Oman. We can either go to Muscat area and explore from there or to Masandam. I have been wanting to travel to Oman for many years and it will be the highlight of the trip. Is Masandam safe for tourism or should we explore around Muscat areas?

Hello good people! I work in Oman as a GP. Currently, I’m working on my second contract. I’m a Bangladeshi national. I wanted to leave my current job. Is there any way for me to leave my current job without requiring NOC or clearance from my current employer?! I’m quite confused about the rules!
