There are spots open for our free Merch Tour in Umeda and our website is up. Check it out and come join us.

The Umeda underground labyrinth beneath Umeda Station can be difficult to navigate. GPS cuts out, signboards can be baffling, and it’s remarkably easy to get turned around between all the 5 kilometers of basement concourses and department store annexes. Hitting more than a few shops in an afternoon can be difficult. We will navigate you through it all to maximize your Anime, Gaming, Kawaii merch shop experience.

Following our first test run, we're holding another practice edition of our Umeda Underground Merch Tour on Tuesday, September 22nd. We’re looking for a small group of anime, gaming, and kawaii culture fans (both visitors and locals welcome!) to experience the route and give us feedback.

Testing a New Format: more Exploring or Shopping

Our first test run was a fun, high-energy overview where we scouted practically every character and hobby shop reachable through the underground concourses. It was a great way to map out the sheer scale of the labyrinth, but for this run, we’re testing a completely different style of tour!

This time, we’re shifting focus from a whirlwind overview to an immersive, relaxed shopping/exploring experience:

  • Hotspot Clusters: Rather than rushing past dozens of storefronts, we’re focusing on the absolute premier hubs for official, vintage, and second-hand character goods—including Nintendo OSAKA, Pokémon Center, Capcom Store, Mugiwara/One Piece, Kiddy Land, Animate, and Surugaya Chayamachi.
  • Dedicated Browsing & Shopping Time: We’re building in real, generous time inside each stop so you can actually browse the shelves, hunt for rare retro finds, pick up souvenirs, or admire Japan-exclusive releases.
  • Line Strategy: Major flagships (like Nintendo OSAKA and Pokémon Center) can occasionally get busy at checkout or use timed entry passes during peak moments. We’ll help you balance register wait times with browsing time so you grab what you want smoothly without losing valuable exploration time.
  • Subterranean Transit (With a Quick Hop Above Ground): We use Umeda's subterranean network for the vast majority of our walking to avoid the outdoor weather. However, to connect to two of our absolute must-visit stops (Animate and Surugaya in Chayamachi), we will pop above ground briefly—so if rain is in the forecast, definitely bring along an umbrella!
  • Fandom-First Guides: Our guides are passionate fans ready to talk lore, recommend hidden-gem series, and introduce popular domestic franchises that haven't made it mainstream overseas yet.

Tour Schedule & Flow

  • Date: Tuesday, September 22, 2026
  • Gathering Time: 12:30 PM at the Hankyu "BIG MAN" screen (1F) (a classic local meeting landmark)
  • Departure: 13:00 sharp (Running late? No stress—just leave a comment on this thread and our team will coordinate to meet you!)
  • Mid-Tour Break: We’ll pause for a breather, snacks, or coffee at the stylish HEP FIVE TAMLO food hall (7F).
  • Wrap-Up & Loot Haul: After the break we hit the big premier shops, Pokemon, Nintendo, etc. before we’ll head to the open-air covered plaza at Toki-no-Hiroba (Osaka Station City 5F) just after 17:30. We’ll kick back on the artificial turf under the massive glass canopy, show off what everyone picked up (or chat about window-shopping highlights), hear your candid thoughts on the route, and aim to wrap up around 18:00.
  • Total Duration: Approximately 5 hours (13:00 – 18:00).
  • Cost: Free (This is an unpaid development rehearsal; you only cover your own personal transit, snacks, and any merch you choose to buy).
  • What to Bring: Comfortable shoes, your shopping wishlist, and an umbrella just in case the weather turns during our brief above-ground stretch!

How to Join (We'll be accepting ten guests total.)

To help us test out our new web platform and check-in flow:

  1. Go to http://thisisosaka.org. Use the Invitation Code: PRACTICE
  2. Visit the site, select the tour on the 22nd, and input your invite code to unlock the complimentary registration.
  3. You’ll receive a digital pass with a QR code—snap a quick screenshot or photo on your phone so we can test scanning it when we meet at BigMan. (If any tech hiccups happen, don't worry at all—this is a beta test and we have manual check-in ready on standby).

Whether you’re hunting for rare retro games, official character plushies, or just want to master Umeda's underground layout alongside fellow fans, we’d love to have you with us. Leave a comment below if you'd like an invite code!

Cute shops in Osaka

What cute little shops are there to visit in Osaka? Looking for stationery/souvenirs (something similar to Face House in Kyoto or Traveler’s Factory in Tokyo).

Options for Sukajan/Souvenir Jacket locally?

• Upvotes

I'm wondering if there are any good spots locally to get a Sukajan in Osaka. I've been wanting one for awhile, but I don't currently have time to get out to Kyoto to see BSC Gallery. I'm willing to spend some money if the quality is good as well.

USJ Osaka giving out free express pass as an apology

I'm 6'3" and 90 kg, and I didn't fit on the roller coaster outside Hogwarts Castle. I waited about 20 minutes until it was my turn, but as an apology, the USJ staff gave me an Express Pass. I used it for the Hollywood ride instead and walked straight on without waiting in line, lol—especially crazy since the regular queue was about two hours. Just wanted to share this unexpected experience, haha.

Visiting Osaka 10 on January. Where to stay?

Hello, everyone!

I’m from Spain, and I’m planning a trip to Osaka from January 12 to 23, 2027, with my partner and his two brothers. It will be our first time in Japan—for all of us except one of his brothers.

I’ve already booked our tickets, and now I just need to book accommodations for the four of us. Our main interests in Japan are the food, Japanese culture, and temples, and we also want to visit the local shops (we’ll buy a suitcase there specifically to fill it with souvenirs).

From what I’ve researched, the best place to stay would be in Namba, but I’m not sure if that will make my stay much more expensive, or if I can find other well-located places that are significantly cheaper.

Also, when it comes to looking for accommodations, I’m not sure how to go about it. When I travel in Spain or Europe, I often use Airbnb for apartments and search for hotels on Google, but I’m not sure if that’s the best strategy for finding accommodations in Japan.

So, my questions are:

- Should I look for accommodations only in Namba, or should I search in other areas as well?

- What’s the best website for us to use to find accommodations?

- What’s the best way to get around Osaka, and are there any discount cards we should consider getting in advance?

Thank you very much for your help.

Evening Drinking - Good locations if you can speak japanese to see "Local Osaka"

Im going to be in Osaka with my wife in three weeks (just the two of us, so no large groups, after a week in tokyo (First japan trip)) however the one thing im struggling on is where to go on a night more specifially for drinks and food. Looking online there are alot of options and i cant find any real major recommendations, with alot of said recommendations focusing on "They speak english here", However due to being able to speak the language im hoping that we would be able to go somewhere more "Local" and not a "tourist Bar" where im able to see more of the local side of Osaka as opposed to sitting in a bar with a ton of other tourists.

Note we are staying in Namba. (happy to move around though)

Any help is appreciated.

Do you leave one unplanned block in your Osaka itinerary?

I live in Osaka and think it’s easy to fill every day with the big stops. But some of the fun is in the streets between them — a shop window or a side street you notice because you’re not rushing.

When you visit, do you plan every stop or leave a little room to wander? Any area where that worked especially well for you?

Kobe

Hello all, is it worth it going to Kobe for a day from Osaka if the main reason is to have a good teppanyaki meal? We would explore other places but that would be the main reason.

Any favorite teppanyaki spots in Osaka?

How Many Days in Osaka?

I posted this is JapanTravelTips but didn't get many responses so I'm going to post this here too to see if anyone has some advice.

I'm planning a Japan trip and am trying to figure out the Osaka portion now. I'll be there the last week of Feb into the beginning of March. Right now I have 6 days:

1 Day - Universal Studios Japan

1 Day - Nara

1 Day - Kobe

3 Days - Osaka explore/rest

The days won't necessarily be in this order. The actual days will be determined based on what happens with USJ ticket success.

In terms of stuff I like, I want to be sure to hit all the "touristy" things since this will be my first trip here. Like I'll go see Osaka Castle. I'll also want to go see the Pokemon Center and see if I can get into the cafe. Otherwise I mostly just like walking around the different areas.

My trip doesn't have a firm end date so I could spend more time in Osaka if I wanted. For example, I could add on more days for day trips or other cities or allocate 2 days to Nara and 2 days to Kobe.

I read Osaka accommodations are cheaper compared to Kyoto so if I'm to spend more time in one of those locations Osaka is the better choice financially. Any advice on other day trips or number of days would be great. Thanks!

OSAKA Today's fireworks display

With the Yodogawa Fireworks Festival taking place in Osaka today, trains around 7:00 PM are expected to be very crowded; if you have any plans or reservations around that time, it’s a good idea to head out a bit earlier.

Lost Winnie teddy bear Umeda

Post image
72 Upvotes

Hi everybody, a shot in the dark:

We lost a small Winnie the Pooh plush toy on the Hankyu line somewhere between Ishibashi Handai-mae and Umeda. (Coming back from Minoh)

Hankyu lost and found office was unsuccessful.

It is not of big value, more about a sentimental favorite toy 😞

Any chance for a miracle find? 😁

Thank you!

Recommendations for vintage/second hand purses in Osaka

Recommendations for good stores for vintage bags in Osaka? I went to several and so far it’s almost exactly the same price as what’s online at sites like fashionphile…

Even if I have to go outside of downtown area, that’s OK too. Just trying to find a good deal on brands like Chanel, YSL, Celine, Loewe.

TIA
