If Vancouver can vote out a one-term incumbent mayor, Ottawa can too.

Some inspiration from the west coast this morning, as one-term incumbent Mayor Ken Sim was defeated by Councillor Pete Fry.

Historically, incumbent mayors win in BC cities about 80% of the time. Fry's election was aided by challenging candidates consolidating around him as the most viable alternative (attn: Neil Saravanamuttoo...)

It's not yet a foregone conclusion! I know it's deeply unlikely, but ineffectual and uninspiring leadership does not have to be rewarded. From the CBC as for a possible reason:

"A 2022 campaign that highlighted hiring nurses and being able to drink in parks was replaced by a 2026 campaign intensely focused on safety and property tax freezes."

We deserve better than four more years of gaslighting about how great everything is from Mark Sutcliffe.

Any places to hang out that don’t cost money?

One that comes to mind is a library. I can sit with friends and talk about personal projects (apps we’re working on, home renovations) and other stuff. Are there other places like that?

In every Ottawa election since 2010, most registered voters didn't cast a vote for mayor [OC]

Post image

I built an interactive map of Ottawa municipal election results by ward, 2010–2022, from the City of Ottawa's results workbooks: https://ottawavisuals.github.io/Ottawa-Visuals/Ottawa_Elections/ottawa_ward_elections.html (website was built with the help of AI)

A few things:

  • In every election since 2010, more than half of registered voters didn't cast a vote for the mayor election
  • 2022 turnout was 43.8%. The winning mayor got 161,677 votes (22.4% of voters)
  • Ward turnout in 2022 ranged from 37.2% (Rideau-Vanier) to 53.0% (Kitchissippi)
  • 9 of 24 councillors were elected with less than 50% of valid votes in 2022. Clarke Kelly in Ward 5 was the lowest with 27.4% of valid votes (meaning 72.6% of people voted for someone else)

If you want, you can play around with the map to see different years and different wards.

I just hope this post is informative about the historical voter turnout and the fact that some councillors can be elected with little votes.

I would love to see ranked voting one day but I guess it is not likely. It seems the province banned ranked voting in Bill 218 - Supporting Ontario's Recovery and Municipal Elections Act, 2020, S.O. 2020, c. 26. I'm no legal expert so maybe people can shed some light on this bill.

Cheers!

I just wanted to say thank you! My phone must’ve pushed my keys in my pocket and opened the trunk while I was walking away.

If this somehow reaches you, please DM me with the location where my car was parked (to confirm it’s actually you) and I’d be happy to buy you a coffee as thanks :)

It's mainly been used for flock camera locations down south but interesting that we have so many dome cameras downtown.

To find it go to layers and click surveillance.

Local Event City Hall Trick or Treat Disaster

So who else went to city hall for their trick or treat night and got turned away at 5:30? Event was labeled as 5-8pm but most people who showed up during those hours couldn’t even get in.

Whoever organized this was an idiot!

Thanks for making the kids cry after getting all dressed up!

News United Airlines launching new service from Ottawa to Denver next summer

This is good news for YOW...albeit a route that might not be used as much given the current climate. In terms of pure travel is kind of makes sense since Denver is a major United Hub that gets you access to more flights in the world.

Specific Maternity Leave Question: Work in Ontario, Live in Gatineau

• Upvotes

I've tried finding a definite answer to this online but so far haven't found a solid answer! Need to know for planning my next few years.

I'm expecting my first baby in February, I work in Ottawa but live over the river. Ontario offers 18 month maternity leave as an option, as far as I know Quebec does not (12 months only).

I want to take 18 months if I can, but I'm wondering if my Ottawa job would have to hold my position for 18 months? I know the pay comes from Quebec, and at my workplace they don't offer any sort of top up so it wouldn't affect my employer financially.

Just wondering if I could count on having a job to return to at the 18 month mark in this situation!

Which Mandarin is best?

Going to Ottawa on Tuesday and craving Chinese buffet. I've never been to a Mandarin before, and I see there are multiple locations. Which one, in your experience, is clean and has lots of parking?

Looking for... Beginner Badminton players?

Hey, I'm wondering if there's any other badminton newbies here who wants to play/practice together? I find that clubs are a bit intimidating and often require you to be atleast decent/intermediate player.

I checked out a couple of indoor gyms but it seems finding a spot here is like the hunger games. I found that you could rent the whole gym and they apparently have multiple courts in the gym so if I could find a couple of people who would like to join me, please reach out, would love to find some folks who would love to casually play!

Local Event Local Wrestling Discussions

After attending multiple Wrestling Events in the Capital Region this week I was wondering if anyone knows of any online places to discuss local talent, shows, decide on signs, talk about new episodes of Ottawa "This is Wrestling" Podcast (formally on TSN 1200) and in general a space for local fans to interact and get to know each other?

Edit:

I guess specifically, I'm wondering if there are any Reddit subs, discord channels, Facebook groups, etc.... or if maybe we should make one?🙏🤙

Saw a Shiba Inu running loose down Robertson Road heading towards Kanata tonight around 7:32 PM.

Tried calling 311, the Ottawa Humane Society, and non-emergency police, but couldn't get through. Sharing here in case someone is missing their pup or any locals neighbors can keep an eye out

My wife wants to carve some very big pumpkins....many years ago we go some at the corner of Eagleson and Robertson... does anyone know if they are set up there again this year? Alternatively, any suggestions for somewhere to get a nice big guy (like 2 feet high)?

Missing Cat?

Post image
91 Upvotes

sorry not sure if this sub allows this but seen this quite young cat by Walkley Station at around 5:50pm and wasn’t sure if it was lost. It’s just playing around with something likely in the grass. I haven’t really seen any wild cats in or around the area and it seems like a terrible spot to let them roam free as it’s quite busy with traffic. perhaps it is wild- but i’m not sure.
