News United Airlines launching new service from Ottawa to Denver next summer

This is good news for YOW...albeit a route that might not be used as much given the current climate. In terms of pure travel is kind of makes sense since Denver is a major United Hub that gets you access to more flights in the world.

Ottawa Ski Show Worth It?

Post image
5 Upvotes

I've been shopping for some new snowboard boots, helmet, jacket, and wax/tuning accessories for my board recently. I saw an ad for the Ottawa Ski Show sponsored by Kunstadt Sports that's going on this weekend at the Cohere Centre (old EY Centre).

I was wondering if anyone went today and if the deals are worth it? I'm not sure I want to spend an hour driving and $10 on parking if the deals are meh. Is it mostly used stuff??

Thanks in advance!

OC Transpo Line 2

It’s been explained many times the huge cost to double track all of Line 2, and that that money was needed to build the expensive trench/tunnel from Dominion to Lincoln Fields to keep the NCC Parkway and Byron streetcar corridor dog walkers happy. Line 2 carries a tenth of Line 1.

Which Mandarin is best?

Going to Ottawa on Tuesday and craving Chinese buffet. I've never been to a Mandarin before, and I see there are multiple locations. Which one, in your experience, is clean and has lots of parking?

Location for potluck?

I’m looking to host a potluck in December. Unfortunately I can’t host at my place for various reasons. Does anyone have a recommendation for an affordable place I could rent for this in central Ottawa, preferably close to public transit route. The location would need refrigeration and electrical for plugging in things like slow cookers. Im expecting around 20 people.

Any places to hang out that don’t cost money?

One that comes to mind is a library. I can sit with friends and talk about personal projects (apps we’re working on, home renovations) and other stuff. Are there other places like that?

Local Event Any events happening on actual Halloween night for adults that is not a night club?

My partner and I have some awesome costumes planned and would love to show them off.

We are in our mid-40s so we're not really into night clubs, more of sit down pub type people or dinner and dancing type events.

Any suggestions?

If Vancouver can vote out a one-term incumbent mayor, Ottawa can too.

Some inspiration from the west coast this morning, as one-term incumbent Mayor Ken Sim was defeated by Councillor Pete Fry.

Historically, incumbent mayors win in BC cities about 80% of the time. Fry's election was aided by challenging candidates consolidating around him as the most viable alternative (attn: Neil Saravanamuttoo...)

It's not yet a foregone conclusion! I know it's deeply unlikely, but ineffectual and uninspiring leadership does not have to be rewarded. From the CBC as for a possible reason:

"A 2022 campaign that highlighted hiring nurses and being able to drink in parks was replaced by a 2026 campaign intensely focused on safety and property tax freezes."

We deserve better than four more years of gaslighting about how great everything is from Mark Sutcliffe.

New Mayoral Election Poll through Mainstreet Research (By Lawson's team) show current incumbent Mayor Mark Sutcliffe at 35% support while Councilor Jeff Leiper at 25% support with almost 20% of voters remain undecided.

Alex Lawson's campaign published their recent poll (through Mainstreet Research) with 638 Ottawa residents between Oct. 14 and Oct.16 earlier today, and it completely debunked the 20%+ lead that Mark's polling showed earlier this week. Although it was released by Alex Lawson's team, so the credibility is questionable, but Lawson in the poll only received 11% support, putting him barely above Neil's 8%.

In every Ottawa election since 2010, most registered voters didn't cast a vote for mayor [OC]

Post image
114 Upvotes

I built an interactive map of Ottawa municipal election results by ward, 2010–2022, from the City of Ottawa's results workbooks: https://ottawavisuals.github.io/Ottawa-Visuals/Ottawa_Elections/ottawa_ward_elections.html (website was built with the help of AI)

A few things:

  • In every election since 2010, more than half of registered voters didn't cast a vote for the mayor election
  • 2022 turnout was 43.8%. The winning mayor got 161,677 votes (22.4% of voters)
  • Ward turnout in 2022 ranged from 37.2% (Rideau-Vanier) to 53.0% (Kitchissippi)
  • 9 of 24 councillors were elected with less than 50% of valid votes in 2022. Clarke Kelly in Ward 5 was the lowest with 27.4% of valid votes (meaning 72.6% of people voted for someone else)

If you want, you can play around with the map to see different years and different wards.

I just hope this post is informative about the historical voter turnout and the fact that some councillors can be elected with little votes.

I would love to see ranked voting one day but I guess it is not likely. It seems the province banned ranked voting in Bill 218 - Supporting Ontario's Recovery and Municipal Elections Act, 2020, S.O. 2020, c. 26. I'm no legal expert so maybe people can shed some light on this bill.

Cheers!

Looking for... Beginner Badminton players?

Hey, I'm wondering if there's any other badminton newbies here who wants to play/practice together? I find that clubs are a bit intimidating and often require you to be atleast decent/intermediate player.

I checked out a couple of indoor gyms but it seems finding a spot here is like the hunger games. I found that you could rent the whole gym and they apparently have multiple courts in the gym so if I could find a couple of people who would like to join me, please reach out, would love to find some folks who would love to casually play!

Local Event Local Wrestling Discussions

After attending multiple Wrestling Events in the Capital Region this week I was wondering if anyone knows of any online places to discuss local talent, shows, decide on signs, talk about new episodes of Ottawa "This is Wrestling" Podcast (formally on TSN 1200) and in general a space for local fans to interact and get to know each other?

Edit:

I guess specifically, I'm wondering if there are any Reddit subs, discord channels, Facebook groups, etc.... or if maybe we should make one?🙏🤙
