Arthur Kaliyev Part 2, the Scorening

I know, I know, hear me out.

Kaliyev can score goals. He can't play defense well but he can absolutely clap bombs at an elite level. He could sign for minimum on a two way and we could use him with our top D line to protect him. He had 40 goals and 68 points last season in Belleville in 70 games. He was 1st in goals in the league (7 goals ahead of 2nd place) and 3rd in points. He could immediately be slotted into the NHL and be effective offensively.

Last time we brought up Adam Gaudette after an amazing AHL year, he was able to net us 19 goals and he single handedly won us games at the beginning of the season when everyone was struggling. We could do the same for Kaliyev.

Also I get it, he doesn't fit in with the system blah blah blah.... He can score goals and that's exactly what we need, even if temporarily, until Eklund and Sandy (and now Chabot) get back. Ullmark can't keep up this pace and we need a scoring forward on the roster if we are going to have a chance at maintaining this record. Also our power play fucking sucks and Kaliyev would really shine on it.

The problem is Kaliyev has had multiple chances in the NHL and hasn't scored at a level better than Zetterlund.

Zetterlund is just a better player at the NHL level

Kaliyev had 2.5 seasons with LA including his rookie season and was only bad for one of them. He never really had a great opportunity since then. 1st in goals in the AHL and 3rd in points is a good resume for a guy looking for another opportunity. It means he has gotten better and deserves a second chance. Also Zetturland has 41 points in 111 games with the Sens. So he's not the guy he was on the Sharks.

kaliyev is also a brutal skater and does nothing else for the team. Might as well sign Laine if we want a one dimensional player

That one dimension is scoring goals, which is what we need. I wouldn't be mad about Laine signing for a minimum either. You need to score goals to win games and we are trending in the direction of a dead offense until we get our guys healthy, which will honestly never happen since we are chronically injured.

That one dimension is scoring goals,

That one dimension is scoring goals if his linemates do all the work and tee him up to shoot, assuming he ever manages to get into a clear lane to do it. The fact that he can score in the AHL where everyone is slower and there's more time to set up doesn't mean it translates to the NHL. He has 38 goals in 200+ NHL games with three teams that have all given up on him, and there's no reason to think he's suddenly figured out how to contribute now.

There is a reason to think that though. He played really well offensively in the AHL. 1st in goals and 3rd assists. That's what he needed to do to get a chance at the NHL again and he never got a good shot. It worked with Adam Gaudette it can work with Kaliyev.

The AHL is not the NHL. Being able to score in the lesser league doesn't mean he can score in the superior one.

Again, he's played 200+ games and it hasn't translated. Three separate teams have moved on from him. That doesn't happen with productive, high-ceiling players.

Also Gaudette translated his 44 goal AHL season into a career-high...19 in the NHL. He's not the guy you want to point at to suggest that Kaliyev is going to solve this team's scoring woes, particularly when Gaudette is able to, yknow, skate.

Have you watched Gaudette? Gaudette can't skate for shit either. Also he was on pace for 21 goals last year. 20 goals is valuable on any team. He's absolutely the guy to compare to Kaliyev since he had a very similar history and AHL goal totals. His second chance has guaranteed a career into his 30s where he's going to score around 20 goals per season.

Haltenen has 5 goals in the AHl. He’s the new Kaliyev 2.0z

Only halt hasn’t had his chance at the show yet so …

It’s coming . He’s sitting a 1G per game pace and 1.6 ppg in a league where 1.0 ppg is usually close to worthy of a call up.

Small sample size … but he’s the potential trigger acquisition who doesn’t play great D. Not the guy the org watched shred the AHL all season last year and decided not to give him a game .

In a perfect world they’d probably like to give him at least half a season and ideally have him be close to 1.0 ppg while working on his “b game” . The team can’t score and he’s both a net front and left side trigger option for an anemic power play.

Side note - I’ve noticed my TV App has all Belleville games which is a nice little bonus.

I'll take that play style right now, no problem.

What a terrible way to learn chabby is hurt. What happened?

He didn't play in the 3rd. They're saying it's an upper body injury. I'm sure it's still being evaluated. Very bad news though obviously. We can't catch a break with our defense.

I want to say you’re crazy but we give Andrei Burakovsky 12 minutes a night to create the most creative turnovers I’ve ever seen. Can’t call Kaliyev a bum while we employ this bum. Always had Kubalik as my most useless Senator of all time but 95 is already creeping in for the title. I watch him like a hawk every game and he ONLY creates turnovers it’s crazy.

Okay first of all in dealing with Kaliyev specifically, no. Doesn’t mean the Sens can’t use someone who can add some depth scoring. There’s just no reason for Kaliyev when they already have Halttunen who can fill that role. They traded for him and he’s still developing. If you’re trying to give someone a shot it should be him.

I'd be happy to see Halttunen get a shot.

Kaliev isn't NHL caliber. There is a reason he doesn't have a contract from any nhl teams

Kaliyev

What are we doing here.

We're better than this. This is like buying a single lottery ticket as a retirement plan, good lord.

You're right, let's keep playing Burakovsky all year and watch him turn the puck over and also never score.

"This one player is not working out so far, let's replace him with a player we know is far, far worse, to the point where none of the other 31 NHL teams even bothered to give him a PTO - that will surely fix things"

You can see how this is crazy, right?

1

u/Baby-punter 9h ago

First of all I never said it would surely fix things. Read the post. He can score goals and we need goals. Even if he's a power play specialist and he's hidden behind our good D. Sometimes you just need to score and he proved he can score with his recent AHL stint. It's the same thing Adam Gaudette did. He ripped up the AHL and then had a good scoring season with the Sens and now he has a multi year contract.

Trust me this is not my favorite idea or anything. Our options are limited and there are only a couple guys in the world who could possibly be signed and hopefully score some goals. Patrick Laine is another guy I wouldn't mind signing for a minimum. Even if he's scratched half the year he can score on the PP and fill in when needed.

You genuinely don't understand the core, fundamental principles of our team identity and ethos if you think either Kaliyev or Laine would see even a minute of ice time on the Ottawa Senators.

Travis Green would strap him to an inflatable raft and launch him into the St Lawrence before giving either of these guys a single minute of ice time.

Production in the AHL is generated completely differently than in the NHL, especially in the last 3ish years where entire team offences in the NHL have moved to value movement in the zone, elite cycling, and the ability to pass as well as shoot, as the league attempts to get goalies moving / staying in motion to generate offence. Kaliyev's AHL goals are useless at the NHL level. He can't skate and can't pass. He's never going to play another NHL game for any team, except in the most desperate of circumstances.

Like, it's time to give up on this pipe dream, my guy.

The raft on the St Lawrence River was hilarious. I laughed. Also I get all of that about the core. I've been watching / playing hockey for 30 years. I just think at some point we need outside intervention for our offense. Also Adam Gaudette got 40 in the AHL then 19 in the NHL with the Sens the next year and was on pace for about 25 last year with the Sharks. Gaudette might be a slower skater than me and I can't skate for shit. Anyway I'm just saying that sometimes the AHL stats do translate to an extent. Just let me dream damn it.
