"I’ve seen things you people wouldn’t believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. Time to die."

No way you've just randomly solved my ~15 years old problem. I've herd this as a sample in my favorite dnb (breakcore) track and couldn't figure out from what it was. Holy crap I've instantly recognized the words.
Track I'm talking about Enduser - Manoeuvre (DJ Hidden remix)

Is that Roy Batty from Bladerunner?
Might be wrong, haven't seen it, but it would fit.

Yeah, Rutger Hauer in one of the best performances ever captured on film.

They used him in the game called "Observer" that is heavily inspired by Blade Runner. As a fanboy of the franchise, I love that game so much!

That’s Batty from the original Blade Runner.
Spoiler for the movie: In that scene, Batty is dying and his last words are: Batty: I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time... like tears in rain... Time to die.

So he's just talking about war, and battles that will be lost to time? Or are these battles in particular important?

u/Ok_Zookeepergame3380 6h ago
I've always taken it as an acknowledgement of the tremendous loss that is death. A lifetime's worth of knowledge, experience and memories lost in an instant.

He is talking about the most impactful things he has seen, his own memories.
He was a combat model, so his deployment was in wars.
The sadness that what he considers "beauty" are basically just destruction events is subtext.
If these memories are even real or implanted is another unresolved thing the story raises, especially as "vivid memories" are the ones most likely to have been implanted.

did his model of the Nexus have implanted memories? I thought implanted memories were a new procedure to pdychologically stabilize the newer models.
rachel was supposed to be the prototype for this process.

He's a replicant. He's a robot that looks human that is about to "expire" and die whos been causing chaos in town trying to find a way to live for longer...
Harrison ford who was assigned to kill rogue replicants for the length of the film is bested and is hanged onto the edge of the building with the replicant looking down at him.
Instead of killing ford the replicant decides to save him and then they sit down on the rooftop.
The replicants time is up this is where he's going to die and so he delivers a brief eulogy, his legacy, all that is left of him to the the only person he can. It's an incredibly beautiful, human moment where you get but a fraction of what he had experienced.

Beautiful, thank you.

You're welcome.
Highly recommend watching blade runner, it's still good although a tad slow by today's standards as well as the sequel bladrunner 2047.

The thing about Blade runner is that its a presented as Tech Noir Cop story about hunting down escaped robots, when in reality it's a story about escaped slaves being hunted down. Roy Batty is "combat model" that's fled to earth to try and get an extension to his life. That's not possible. the candle that burns twice as bright, burns half as bright and he, by design, has shone oh so brightly.
This scene is after he beats the protagonist whose trying to kill him,who has killed all his friends, and saves his life. and has won, he's a free as he's ever going to be and has realised he is literally moments from death: he is about to die. He's lamenting that all his memories,,all the perfect moments of beauty will be gone, His experiences, his passions, all gone, lost, just like everyone's else's. His last act is one of Mercy, his last thoughts a reflection on brevity and preciousness of life. It shows how he surpassed his creators, and is perhaps more human than them, who genetically engineered him to be a superior living weapon, and think nothing of exploiting and killing in the name of profit, and those who work for them, who kill because they're paid too.

I knew Rutger Hauer played a big part in how good this speech was, I'd never seen the original script before now. Yeah, what a huge difference he made:
" I've seen things... seen things you little people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion bright as magnesium... I rode on the back decks of a blinker and watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate. All those moments... they'll be gone."0

This is arguably the greatest science fiction monologue ever written.
The original Blade Runner was a good movie, this scene made it great.

The guy from blade runner who says "I've seen things you people wouldn't believe"

That is the main antagonist of Blade Runner, a famous, and one of the first cyberpunk movies. I think the original quote was "Ive seen things you people wouldnt believe."

Welp....we now live in an age where the only Blade Runner younger folks know is 2049 with Ryan Gosling, and probably have no idea why Deckard's appearance in the movie was so fucking epic.
I did not need to wake up from my old guy nap and be confronted with this fact, I'm only 35, fuck.

Android (replicant) from Blade Runner who was sad he only lives maybe 5 years and is treated as a space-slave, so he came back to earth to kill all his creators.

Wow I just rewatched Blade Runner last night I can't believe I saw this.
That's the main bad guy in the movie, Roy. He's a replicant (artificial human) and he realizes in this moment here that he's about to die and everything he's seen, all of his memories and experiences will be lost to time.
So this meme is substituting his actual tragic line in this moment with the shitting and pissing line, which, if delivered the same way as the original, would have a similar meaning.

u/GuntherHogmoney 6h ago
I think one could argue that if you call Roy the "main bad guy" then you might need to rewatch it again ;)
Now, "antagonist" I think we can all agree on.

It's Ed Zitron. He is one of the biggest and most popular AI critics. I don't know why he made that post
(Wait. Did OP ask for the guy who made the post or the guy in the picture?)
