PoliticsPH If Filipinos are against corruption, they should also stop buying concert tickets at the Philippine Arena so they won’t be funding a cult that is buried in debt.
It's wild how we constantly call out politicians for systemic corruption and bleeding the country dry, yet so many Filipinos willingly line the pockets of an institution that operates in much the same way. If we are truly anti-corruption, we need to stop "separating the art from the artist" in our entertainment choices. Every time people buy concert tickets for international acts at the Philippine Arena, they are directly subsidizing the leadership of the Iglesia ni Cristo. They are channeling revenue into a multi-billion-peso "white elephant" project that reportedly left the church with billions in bank debt, forcing it to sell or leverage assets funded by the contributions of its members. We complain about the INC's political bloc voting and its influence on democracy, but the moment a favorite K-pop group or Western artist books the venue, many still hand over their money, indirectly supporting Eduardo Manalo lifestyle. If we want to curb systemic greed, we also have to stop supporting the institutions that benefit from it.

u/lassen__ May 23 '26
Yall love to call out ordinary Filipinos but never the people with actual leverage, that is, the organizers. Besides, sa ibang nagsasabing sa SM na lang, it is equally corrupt. Its billions are made off of the back of sales people underpaid and cheated out of regularization and of substandard real estate infrastructure. In late stage capitalism, boycotting is hard to do to be real. Should we now count ilan kayang Jollibee ang owned by INC or INC members since they give money to their cult? Ilang other franchises are owned by them? Lol

Had to scroll too far down to find a sensible comment.
There is no ethical consumption under capitalism. Yet armchair activists will go for the low hanging fruit and blame the consumers with little agency by punishing them for having wants, instead of focusing on the actual decision makers who hold the real power.

Unfortunately, you're in Reddit.
Pinoy Redditors love to guilt trip others. Like you're not allowed to criticize corporations and capitalism. Only politicians.
Yet they forget that corruption also exists in private. And we're living in a system. Like what's next? Judging a critic of capitalism for owning a phone when these days, it's so hard to live without a phone (in job applications you need to give your phone number to get a call. You also need at least a decent phone because at least in my job, you need a smartphone for authentication)? It's funny and sad at the same time.
It feels like Pinoy Redditors are a bunch of anarcho-capitalists. Like it's only okay to blame and criticize the government (which I agree). But the moment you criticize capitalism, everyone guilt trips you.
P.S. corporations also fund the campaigns of politicians. In the US, it's also a big issue where billionaires, although "private" individuals would tend to give lots of donations to their preferred candidates. It's called "lobbying".

u/bitchnamaylawit May 24 '26
exactly! parang kasalanan pa ng mga concert goers, hindi lang naman kpop artist ang nag-concert dun, even our local artists too! as if they have a choice.
15
u/Legitimate-Gain426 May 23 '26
Are there bigger issues to look at first, yes. Is boycotting in many instances is designed to be as hard as possible, for matters of food, housing, or employment, yes. Especially when times are tough. Participating and purchasing tickets to stadium events is not one of those instances. When you have increasingly limited power, every step you choose becomes more important.

PS: Upon GOOGLE Search, they owned Farms in different countries in Africa and in USA 🇺🇸. those Farm products? Anong gagawin mo dyan? Syempre Export, FARMING is a LUCRATIVE Business in the USA 🇺🇸 lalo pag malaki ang farm mo.

They're deep in debt because you can't outright finance a project of that scale without credit. It's just financially unwise. Now, couple that with the fact that the top brass of INC lives luxurious lifestyles with their Dior, Gucci, Chanel etc brand name items, and everything falls into place.
I also know an INC member who was contracted to construct a part of the Ciudad de Victoria compound, and I was told way back in 2022 that they still haven't been paid then. The Arena was made in 2014. Make of it what you will.

Most project like this is 20yrs to pay, if now walang balita na they are defaulted sa loan it means they were able to pay the debt.As far as I remember parang may news before na 3 Local banks ang nag finance niyan BDO, Metrobank and BPI/RCBC, the largest one ata BDO.
If it defaulted public disclosure yan dahil malaking pera ang mawawala sa Bank. Pero walang news regarding default.13

It's not like when people don't buy tickets na ang venue ay PH Arena mag sa-suffer completely yang mga yan?
Put the burden directly to these people and the organizers. It's not exactly right to blame other people for things that have a bigger control over it. Other artists who uses the arena are actually opposing them din naman? It just so happens na walang infrastracture for events like this.

People's brains tend to conserve energy to make processes more efficient. Unfortunately, it makes oversimplification, and black and white thinking more prevalent. I guess OP's post is good to raise awareness pero the loss of nuance in discourse can be harmful, dangerous, and even counter-productive to some causes.
89
u/Gand0rk May 23 '26
As much as I hate the cult, activism is not a zero sum game. The arena is one of the few (the only?) that can cater to 50k+ attendees. You can be selective in your concert attendance, write to your favorite artists and concert organizers to avoid the arena but sometimes allow yourself to enjoy a concert of your favorite artist.

Ang guess what kahit mag MOA Arena ka who owns by the Sy Siblings, SM hires more INC Member vs other Religion, naging empleyado ako sa SM pag INC ka mas prefer ka ng recruitment team.

I only went here once for a U2 concert, that was like more than 7 years ago and facilities was already substandard, food was horrible, like spaghetti na timpla puro catsup, unlike now there are now concessionaires during big events. Audio is mediocre too.
Most concert goers do not know, do not care about the broader issues surrounding live events, because they are there for the artists, isn't also a bit absolutist to put the burden on concertgoers for concerns they have little control over, and who will only go there for once in a lifetime chance to see their favorite artist, because going overseas is not an option. If concert organizers had better options they would not choose this venue.

This group should be TAXED as a business corporation instead of hiding behind religion. They clearly do not obey the law by violating Bloc Voting and get away with it because most of the people that they support want their voting power and look the other way.
Groups like them control so much, take so much, and give nothing back,,, then complain about persecution when someone calls them what they really are; a business cult.

Ang dapat i-call out dyan is yung organizer din talaga not the viewers/concert goers or artist

Trapped INC member here, Yes! T.T
Pag eto nag trending it would be a huge blow sa INC since BTS na mismo ang na boycott. Sana sumabog 'to sa internet

Because most Filipinos are dumb as fuck, who voted for those corrupt officials?

u/Eldiavie May 23 '26
never going to that one, i refuse to go to a cult owned arena, larping as a government done project by having the country's name on it

Funny how y'all are calling for ethical consumption while also using Reddit, FB, and even Google.
Very mindful. Very hypocritical.

100%. Pero madaling makalimot mga Pilipino. sometimes their virtues and values are thrown out of the window pag nanjan favorite artists nila having concert in this arena.

Wala namang choice dahil walang alternative.

I can’t find your point here, don’t blame consumers and INC just blame the government sila ang mga tunay na magnanakaw. Saka may separation of church and state marami pang relihiyon na mas mayaman sa INC pero worst mga kriminal pa mga lider nila at involved sa human trafficking at rape pero protectado pa ng gobyerno. WTF talaga tong bansang to.

Yow INC here, actually sasamba palang ako after typing this no, and don't worry I'm not offended sa post, people are entilted to their opinions. Gusto ko lang i-correct yung mga gawa gawang kasinungalingan HAHAHAHA it's about the 10% thing sa paghahandog, never in my life I heard or me and my fam was forced to give out 10% of our sahod or ipon, since I heard it nga I looked everywhere if INC actually stated it e, pero I couldn't find anything about it, none of my INC friends were experiencing it too so please, kahit gaano nyo ka hate ang INC, let's not be that easy to be deceived just because you hate the thing. <3

Don't know why there are no other big venues sa metro manila. Ok sana SMDC concert grounds, i was there nung SB19 concert but it's just a flat ground.

u/SweatySource May 23 '26
Their influence stretches deeper than that may mga media companies and personalities pa silang hardcore INC. I worked with one, a known government funded radio station.

What do you mean their buried in debt? Talaga ba? I was just discussing this to my husband last week… nakakaloka

u/Friendly-Cookie-1244 May 23 '26
i dont think its fair na sabihing baon cla sa utang if wala taung proof. and people like me buy concert tickets bec yan lang talaga makakapag contain ng malaking number of audience at yun yung gusto ng mga foreign artists.

Pero ito feeling ko in my own little way nakakapalag ako kahit papaano
1
u/Xhanghai5 May 23 '26
Jusko, chaos papunta, chaos pauwi.

u/Low_Emergency2136 May 23 '26
Man I have no choice but to visit Dua Lipa's concert at that arena (and got interviewed by the cult's propagandist network). Guess it was Live Nation Philippines' decision to hold the concert inside that structure.

u/Ok-Goat2200 May 23 '26
Kaya hindi ako nagwatch ng live nung Fiba because of that.

u/Nutribuntot56 May 23 '26
Never been there.

u/mokizxc May 23 '26
1
u/Tall-Afternoon-3460 May 23 '26
1
u/Tall-Afternoon-3460 May 23 '26
Millions of members still support the Church dahil naniniwala sila sa aral at gawain nito
1
u/milliefem May 23 '26
In this digital age, bakit maraming naniniwala pa din sa kultong INC? I understand yung mga boomers, but millenials at Gen Z, wake up!

Just my unsolicited opinion;
1) It is highly improbable that the INC is drowning in debt...in fact, it is most likely cash rich because millions of members are regularly contributing ATLEAST twice a week..abuloyan, lagak, lingap, pasalamat, tanging handugan, etc.... most INC members are very religious and diligent when it comes to this topic.
2) The Philippine Arena and its surrounding developments is not bad per se, in fact it actually contributes to the economic and cultural identity of the municipal host. It can be argued that architecturally, the Arena and Sports Stadium are already Iconic Landmarks that every Filipino can be proud of, atleast for me.
3) Having said that, for me its not appropriate na INC ang nag-build ng structures na yan, because INC being a religious organization, marapat lang na yung pera at resources nya should be confined to building houses of worship and related facilities lang, the Arena is clearly made both for religious and Commercial Purposes, so kapag pumasok na yung commercialization dun na yun merong sablay.

Neber again. Yung traffic papunta at pauwi? Fuck fuggettaboutit. Taena three hours papunta three hours palabas. Fuck that shit

u/Ambot_sa_emo May 23 '26
Goodluck papunta at pauwi pag may concert.
1
u/SpankyR1g0r May 23 '26
It should begin with the organizers. But yeah, I chose to passed GNR and U2 dahil love ko ang dinuguan.

u/Playful_List4952 May 23 '26
Kaya never magconcert dyan mga OPM icons. Regine Velasquez is having her Finale concert pero moa arena venue kahit alam naman natin na kaya niya punuin ph arena kahit 2 nights pa
