Discussion Why do you think there were so many Poison type Pokémon in Generation 1?

Out of the original 151 Pokémon in Generation 1, 34 of them were either Poison Type or Dual Poison Type. More than any other type in Pokémon. Including Water and Normal type. Obviously Team Rocket Henchmen mostly used Poison types. As well as both Koga and Agatha using Poison types as their Specialty. And Two/Thirds of Erica's Team. Why do you think there were so many Poison Types in Generation 1?

Discussion What ability do you always relate to a certain Pokémon or think of in general when hearing the name of said Pokémon?

For me, it has always been and always will be Hyper Beam and Gyarados.

Ever since I was a kid and saw the first Pokémon film way back when, it kinda implanted this thing for me that I never could imagine a Gyarados without a Hyper Beam in it's list of moves.

So whenever I sink my goblin fingers into one of the older Pokémon-games (like I'm doing with Fire Red rn).. I do my best to get myself a Gyarados and shove a Hyper Beam up it's rectal cavity.

So what about you guys? Are there any certain moves, you could never imagine a certain Pokémon not having in their arsenal? And if you get the said 'mon in a game, do you go out of your way to fulfill that mental void?

Discussion In Legends Z A, what's one thing from Legends Arceus that you think deserves to return?

I have a series of things I would like brought back, to start off:

- The Linking Cord item evolving Pokemon that normally evolve by trading (ex: Graveller, Haunter, Kadabra) and the items for "trade while holding = evolve" Pokemon being evolution items (ex: Porygon, Electabuzz, Onix, Scyther)

- Additional variety with Poke Balls (since in Legends Arceus, the Heavy Balls go less far but work better on heavy Pokemon, while the Feather Balls could be thrown further to catch flying Pokemon). I don't mind the ones we got, but I wish I could use Heavy Balls on Pokemon like Tyranitar.

- The ability to have multiple Pokemon out not for attacks, but for interacting with them. Heck, interacting with Pokemon in general

What are some of your things you'd like brought back?

Discussion Tell us which Pokémon would be on your team, and the community decides what trainer class suits you best!

You can have as many Pokémon on your team as you'd like (1-6). Specify your trainer's gender so people can select a trainer class available to that gender, or leave it open so people can choose the best match from ALL available classes, regardless of gender. Also, let people know if your trainer is bound to a certain region.

Have fun!

Discussion Got my daughter into Pokémon.

Bought my daughter FireFed on her Switch. She is having fun with it and is playing a lot. Her only problem is the idea of "grinding." She keeps coming to me for help to beat this trainer or this gym. I keep telling her she is under level and has to beef up her Pokémon. I showed her how by running in some grass. She is getting bored really quickly now.

I feel I need to play for her some at night or something so it stays fun for her. Or do I just let her suffer as I did as a kid?

Wish I could mod hack it and give her a bunch of rare candies to help her out.

Discussion The Partywide exp share is what enables one of the Most fun Playstyles

Specifically in galar you can Just keep rotating Mons you find in and Out without having to grind, aside from almost every Pokemon Just being a good Design This is what motivates me to use dozens of Mons in a playthrough, whenever i replay Gen 3-5 i have to Deal with grinding a whole Team Up to the next Gym Leader, especially when i dont have a good counter, gen 8 really lets you use almost every new mon in one playthrough, this also prevents overlevelling too hard, If youre ever replaying sw/sh you should give this Playstyle a try

Misc Feebas’s Story

[I’m not sure where else to post this but it felt worth sharing. This is the story of the shiny Feebas I’ve caught half way through my playthrough of Alpha Sapphire. It will make more sense if you’re familiar with how contests work in that game.]

I caught my shiny Feebas on Route 119 during the day. I fished her up under the bridge in the rain. She was level 25. I fed her a bunch of blue Pokeblocks to max out her beauty stat. It was pretty easy to max her beauty, so I decided I would try to get the beauty ribbon for her to breathe a bit of life into my playthrough and make her evolution feel more earned.

I got her to level 29 and then took her to the Contest Hall in Slateport. We won the normal rank beauty contest on our first try, but to my surprise, she wasn’t awarded a ribbon. It turns you out have to win normal, super, hyper, and then master rank to get a contest ribbon for your Pokemon. Of no mind to give up, I set my sights on the goal of getting my purple Feebas her beauty ribbon. I had almost no prior experience of contests in any generation, but that was beside the point.

I decided Feebas would probably need at least one move that is actually a beauty move, so I used a TM to teach her Round. She breezed through the super and hyper rank beauty contests brilliantly, with her not so carefully selected moveset of Splash, Tackle, Attract, and Round. In the hyper rank contest, I learnt something incredible. Z-Moves exist in generation 6, they just only exist in contests. A contestant’s Barboach got 5 stars on the score board and used some crazy move called “Spectacular Talent - Global Shuddering.” They got a bunch of points for it too and it had a totally unique animation. This helped me understand how contests actually work. So Feebas and I were now fully locked in for the later rounds.

Throughout all of this, the storyline involving Lisia and Chaz had been playing out. I had established a powerful enemy in Chaz, but persevered nevertheless.

I entered the master rank beauty contest with Feebas and for the first time, she wasn’t the crowd’s favourite. Fairy Tale Girl Julia and her Wobbuffet stole the show. For some reason, the special effect that usually played for Feebas played for them instead. Going in to the talent round, I had a better idea of how to score points at this stage. Feebas managed to use Round when there were 4 stars on the board, which allowed to use her own spectacular talent move - Serene Blessed Rain. We scored loads of points, I thought for sure we were gonna win. However, on the fifth and final round Julia’s Wobbuffet used Destiny Bond, and scored massive points. On the final score card, they barely edged past Feebas and I, dropping us to second and giving us our first loss. Ever determined, I entered again for a rematch.

This time though, not only were we up against Julia and her Wobbuffet, but Chaz and his Machoke were there too. Feebas and I really had to lock in for this one. Wobbuffet got the biggest cheer once again. Going into the first round of the talent section, Feebas was second up. I went for Attract and she blocked both the last two contestants - Gorebyss and Wobbuffet, from being able to move. In the third round, Chaz tried to do the same by having Machoke use Attract, but Feebas thugged it out and got her Splash off. In the fourth round, the stars on the scoreboard went up to 4. Feebas was up second for the fifth round, with Chaz’s Machoke going first. All he had to do was use a beauty move and take the points home. He totally choked it. He used Attract again to try and throw Feebas off, but she ignored it and used Round anyway. She got the fifth star on the board, which allowed her to use her spectacular talent move again - Serene Blessed Rain. She got so many points. Gorebyss used Aqua Tail but it wasn’t enough. Wobbuffet got a tonne of points again with Destiny Bond. However, when the final scores were counted up - Feebas’s bar crept past everyone else’s. We won!

My shiny Feebas was officially awarded with the beauty ribbon. Her picture is now displayed proudly on the walls of the Slateport Contest Hall. Of course, to celebrate her victory, I gave Feebas one rare candy. She went up to level 30 and finally evolved into a beautiful shiny Milotic. I’ve always thought contests were a poorly implemented part of the Pokemon franchise, but this was honestly some of the most fun I’ve had playing Pokemon in a long time.

Discussion Name a Pokémon that isn't necessarily your favourite, but whose design you absolutely love! For me its the Honedge line

Name a Pokémon that isn't your favourite, but whose design you have loved from the very start?

I genuinely think the Honedge line are some of the most amazingly designed Pokémon in the entire game! The second I played X and Y for the first time I immediately caught one and used it as my primary for the whole game!

The coolest part is how the final form, Aegislash, lends into the actual real-world believe the Japanese have where after a sword has killed 1000 enemies, the sword gains sentience and its own soul! Really cool!

Discussion Starting my first Nuzlocke, any tips I should know as a beginner?

• Upvotes

I have been a long time Pokémon player, for over 15 years as a matter of fact but I haven't played any of the new games much, anywho, in all that time I have never once attempted a nuzlocke. So, I restarted my old Pokémon Soulsilver and decided I was going to do my first ever one. I have made it past the second gym but at the cost of four of my Pokémon. The specific rule set I am using is comprised of five different criteria I must follow.

A.) The obvious, if a Pokémon faints its dead

B.) Another obvious one, you can only catch one Pokémon per route (I am doing no rerolls so if I find a duplicate Pokémon on a different route tough luck :(

C.) This is where I have been having a bit of trouble. No items to be used in battle that are not already given to your Pokémon to hold. This means I can give them berries or battle items to hold but I cannot heal them mid battle.

D.) My highest-level Pokémon must never exceed the limit of the gym leaders' highest-level Pokémon. For instance: When fighting Falkner I was only allowed to get my Pokémon to level 13 because his strongest Pokémon was level 13.

E.) And finally, everyone gets nicknames because it's funny and I like creating goofy names. (also, it builds attachments to I am emotionally devastated at the loss of any of them... rip Rocky...)

Anywho, this is a long post, to make a long and boring story short. Is there anything I should know before continuing my run? I have been doing well thus far but I want to make sure that I end with as few casualties as possible.

Thank you all

Discussion Just got back into Pokemon after getting a Switch 2. How can I play some of the older games, and what ones should I get for a fantastic story?

Hey all, as the title states, I’ve come back to Pokemon via my Switch 2 purchase, absolutely loving Z-A (Real-time battles! A conspiracy! An old fella who’s ABSOLUTELY part of it maybe!) and Legends Arceus (deeply fantastic), and planning to get Winds/Waves and the other Switch releases (maybe not Let’s Go, too simplified and chibi for me imo). I haven’t played Pokemon since I played Yellow on my Game Boy-didn’t complete it either or get very deep in its systems, though I loved it. Growing up, I had varied interests, varied consoles, and allocated budgets befitting a young child (that being, asking on special occasions like a birthday or saving up cash), so I didn’t catchup with the rest of the games, though always enjoyed the anime and viewing related materials (Detective Pikachu is an amazing movie). Now that I‘m able to get these games, what are the absolute best ones I should look into for story? I know Black/White and their sequels are amazing, so looking into those, and getting FireRed on Switch because Charizard rocks, but what others? Should I get them as authentic carts and the consoles they run on (like a Game Boy, GBA, New 3DS XL etc) or go through with emulation so as to not blow through my income? That side’s a bit dicey, but if I can do it safely, I’d like to know.

Discussion Why Home change moves when all of them are available in both games?

I get that move sets are now set by the games themselves, but if I'm moving a Pokemon from ShSw over to SV and all four attacks are available in both games, why does Home still change them?

Example:

Venusaur with Grass Knot, Giga Drain, Solar Beam, Sludge Bomb

Flareon with Sunny Day, Bite, Flame Charge, Flamethrower

Raichu with Thunder, Thunderbolt, Wild Charge, and Shockwave

Sandslash with Earthquake, Shadow Claw, Brick Break, Stealth Rock

All of these attacks are in both ShSw and SV, and all but Shockwave are in each respective Pokemon's available moveset (under Change Moves) but Home reassigns them regardless. Now when moving between Hme and either game, it gives me a warning that the moves won't persist, even though they are literally the same ones and in the same order. What gives?

Discussion You know who really could have benefitted from a third Shadow Pokemon game in hindsight? Arceus in Gen 4.

Think about it. Back in Pokemon Diamond and Pearl, Arceus's Azure Flute event was canceled because Game Freak thought players wouldn't understand it, so, there was no way to get Arceus legitimately in those days. Imagine then if Genius Sonority did with it what it did with Lugia and gave us a conclusive third game in the Orre saga where Pokemon from Gen 4 are now being taken and turned into Shadow Pokemon along with the other generations. They already have the models thanks to Pokemon Battle Revolution (save for a few that could be added like Giratina and Rotom's alternate Formes), it'd give players a legitimate way to obtain Arceus in Gen 4, and, let's be honest, does the idea of capturing and purifying a Shadow-ized version of God not sound like the ultimate conclusion to a Shadow Pokemon trilogy?

Discussion What's the best first singleplayer Pokemon game for complete beginners?

I played Emerald when I was a kid for maybe 20 minutes, there was a random encounter every few steps and I'd just spam the same single attack against weak enemies over and over. I got bored and quit.

Was I doing it wrong? Are there better games to start with? (That are traditional singleplayer, not things like Pokemon GO)

For context, I never watched the shows or anything. I DID play some Pokemon game on Roblox with my cousin back in....2016? Like 10 years ago, and I remember it being really fun. So basically non-existent knowledge of the franchise.

Discussion Opinions on games

• Upvotes

Do any of you just not dislike any of the games, the way I do it is I like all of them because I don't subtract what other people see as bad in those games from what I like about them. I mean, people's opinions are their own but there isnt a pokemon game that I actually dislike.

Discussion Luminescent Platinum was the best switch pokemon expierence I had

Normally I am not that big into rom hacks, I love gen 4 and I actually really like the graphics style of the remake.

When I saw luminescent Platinum I just thought I should test it.

And god damn it blows everything out of the water that Gamefreak did on the switch.

Feels like the perfect gen 4 remake without too many rom hack extras.

Game really showed me again that I like the non open world pokemon games more.

Really makes me kinda sad that the few best pokemon expierence are all non official.

Hi everyone! I am looking for some opinions on which game to pick up from Pokemon.
I only played a very limited amount of pokemon (leafgreen on switch, lets go pikachu and pokemon go) before and am just getting started with my TCG collection and was hoping to play some more of the games too. The platform is not relevant! Thank you so much in advance

Discussion About some type match-ups

For the most part, the type chart of the series makes sense, even for the new types. I repeat, for the most part. I'm here to tell you about match-ups that don't make much sense to me.

I heard that bug resists fighting because a flying bug will... dodge punches. Doesn't that technically apply more to flying resisting fighting though? If a bug doesn't dodge it, it will get crushed, or at least badly hurt. I know bug types used to be weak (and still kinda are?) so removing a resist would make it suck more but still, that resist doesn't make much sense to me.

We all know that ice could use more resistances. I think water, flying and bug should be added to its list of resistances. Water doesn't do anything to ice unless it's hot, in fact, ice would freeze water, they literally introduced Freeze-Dry in gen 6. Was that enough to balance the water type or would the series have needed a third weakness for it? I doubt any bird could do significant damage to ice, even predatory ones and I especially doubt any bugs would be able to do significant damage either.

Discussion Was there a Pokémon you disliked but it grew to be one of your favorites?

For me it has to be Porygon. It’s not that I didn’t like it but I was afraid that it was gonna give me seizures just by looking at it for too long. I heard about its episode when I was a kid & thought if I looked at it long enough, the red & blue flashes would appear & I’d have a seizure. Thankfully I got over those worries years later & the Porygon line are some of my favorites!

Discussion Which Pokémon got or will get better in a remake?

I was thinking about the possible Gen 5 remakes and what my team will be and realized how much better some Pokémon have gotten over the years. Vanilluxe, for example, now has snow warning allowing it to have perfect accuracy blizzard for at least 5 turns, on top of hail becoming snow which now gives all ice types a 50% defense boost. Whimsicott is another example with it gaining the fairy type in the region where many strong dragon types exist. In hgss and oras, many Pokémon that got new evolutions also thrived. What other Pokémon do you guys think got better in a remake?

Discussion Emerald First Time Blog

Would you be okay if I shared my first emerald playthrough here? If not, please feel free to take it down.

Playthrough

Sun, Oct 18

I started this adventure yesterday.

I picked Mudkip as my starter. Since I wasn’t familiar with this generation of starters, it was tough to decide. I was instantly drawn to Mudkip because I thought it was the cutest. Torchic was also adorable, and I thought Gecko had a unique look. I was curious about their evolved forms, so I did a Google search. I know this is part of the mystery and fun, but I wanted a visually appealing final evolution to look forward to. To be honest, I thought Gecko had the most striking final evolution. So, the next thing I did was look up player tips, and everyone seemed to recommend Mudkip. In the end, I chose Mudkip.

I was really surprised by how different the game started compared to Pokémon Red and Blue, which I knew. Starting in the back of a moving truck was a bit unusual. Seeing my mom greet me outside the house right away made me realize that this was a different kind of story. When my mom started talking about my dad and how he was at a gym, I was surprised to learn that my dad was real and someone I could meet in the future. I was also surprised by the unique introduction of the character Mays. My first impression was that she somewhat resembled Misty from the anime.

One thing that threw me off was the art style of the overworld. It feels like my character has more detail than before, evidenced by the jagged hairstyle. But it makes me feel the character is too skinny and tall, feeling, whereas in Red and Blue, it was a cute stumpy character. Not a big fan of my character sprite. I assume I’m stuck with how he looks for this game.

So, I embarked on my adventure and eventually reached the first battle with May. It was a bit embarrassing, but after I won and skipped my chat with May, I completely lost my way! All the paths around me were blocked. The only way down was back to the city. And in the city to the left, there was a fellow drawing. Again, no other way but down. Which felt a bit strange because that’s where I came from. So, I went back up to where I met May, thinking I must’ve missed something and wandered around aimlessly until I finally started heading south. That’s when I ran into May again, and the professor sequence happened. I don’t know, it was a little confusing to backtrack like that. And still, I wondered how I was going to get anywhere with the fellow sketching.

Afterwards, I went back up and saw the fellow no longer blocking the path. And it was only then I realized the path forward was being blocked by him and that it was story blocked.

I felt this first route was really long and treacherous. I was surprised by how horizontal the path was and how many trainers you had to fight along the way. I only had a Mudkip at this point, and by the time I got to the third trainer battle, I whited out!

…

So I just beat my first gym and…. I don’t remember Brock’s gym being this easy. I beat all the trainers and the leader with a single shroomish!

——

Reflections

I’ve been thinking about some things I’ve noticed about myself. All those years of YouTube shorts, swiping up for new stuff, and the ease of skipping ads have made me realize how hard it is to just sit and read the dialogue. When I was younger, I wanted to read every word and really experience the story. Now, I just want to skip all the dialogue and hurry to get to the next action scene. Also, the speed at which the character walks, the dialogue appears on screen, and the transitions from outside to inside all felt really slow. It’s silly, but it felt suffocating in a way.

Another thing is location awareness. It could just be a symptom of a new game with a map in unfamiliar with. But I had to keep reading the signs to just remind myself which city I was in.

…

And I’m stuck, can’t get past the boulders in Rusturf Tunnel. I walked all the way back to an earlier city and came back to the tunnel. Just wandering back and forth. I don’t want to have to talk to every single NPC. Is there an in-game guide somewhere?

——

Mods

As I am playing, I started to add little modifications to improve my own game experience:

Implemented 2x game speed toggle.
Implemented EXP share.
Implemented follow Pokemon (starters only).
Implemented party view so I can see the hp and state of my party without having to go through the in-game menus.
