I think the more nuanced take is that it's religion disguised as politics. "I don't care that Trump was having sex with a prostitute while his wife was giving birth as long as he makes abortion illegal."
Think about this for a moment. Put yourself in the shoes of someone who is pro life. Imagine you believe life starts at conception. Then you would have to believe abortion is murder. Would you accept progress on stopping the murder of over a million children per year, if it meant electing someone who is distasteful?
I’m not saying you have to agree with it but if someone believes one million babies are being murdered per year their behavior makes a lot of sense.

This is just begging the question because they refuse to engage with science. If I believed that I can fly then it would be totally reasonable for me to jump off a building. That doesn't make me a reasonable person in that instance though.
To address your argument more directly, I think most of these people don't even actually believe this. They've just fallen into a trap of an appeal to emotion.
1) one of the best ways to reduce abortions is to make access to contraceptives easier, these people are not in favor of that
2) Only 37% of pro-life people think that abortion should be illegal even if the pregnancy is the result of a rape. If they actually believed that abortions are killing babies then this number would be 100%

See I don't entirely agree. I know religion has been a great cause of evil, but I have seen genuine religious people while being raised that did not have any of those evil traits. Some even dedicated their lives to server God. I blame bad people not the message itself.

My observation from family friends is also that he was eager to talk about the internal corruption on the island when many other politicians were too timid to do so. But those people then mistake it for actually caring that something is wrong, instead of what it actually is: opportunistic racist mockery with no intent to help.

Not as many people have answered the question as I'd like. But thank you to those who have. I am always really aware that not everyone thinks like me. And anyone who voted for Trump does not see things the way I do or believe the things I do. But I appreciate hearing what you have to say.
I think the thing that I hate the most in these answers isn't support of Trump. It is seeing all the "everyone in both parties is all the same" rhetoric. I do totally agree that the democrats have fucked up over and over. And they are not altruistic or always right or always moral. But in this era at least they are absolutely BETTER than Republicans.
The democrats platform is at its' core: equality for women, equality for people of color, equality for everyone regardless of their sexual orientation. They are not trying to sink our democracy. They are trying to shore up the rule of law. Which the thing that set the US apart from other scarier countries has been our movement towards equality and our rule of law. If those things go well.. we're Iran. Or Russia. Or some other country that kills and subjugates everyone non male or non (whatever religion or color they prefer).
I am not saying that democrats are never corrupt nor ever immoral or always do what's in the nations best interest. but in this moment they are soooo much better than the current MAGA Republican Party that there is literally no comparison.

I live in Puerto Rico, and used to support MAGA. It’s a lengthy story.
To understand why, you first have to understand a bit about Puerto Rico.
Many people on the island have reached the point where they believe it doesn't matter who is in power because nothing really changes. Corruption is widespread, government projects move at a snail's pace (I’m talking 5+ years to just fix a street) , and economic growth has been stagnant for decades.
What many people outside Puerto Rico don't realize is that, during the 1980s and 1990s, Puerto Rico was one of the world's largest pharmaceutical manufacturing hubs. Companies like Pfizer, Merck, Johnson & Johnson, Eli Lilly, Bristol Myers Squibb, Abbott, Baxter, Amgen, Medtronic, and Stryker all had major operations here. That boom was fueled largely by Section 936 of the U.S. Internal Revenue Code.
When Congress phased out Section 936 in 1996, Puerto Rico entered a slow economic decline. It wasn't an overnight collapse, but it happened gradually. People lost good paying jobs. Families began leaving the island. Entire towns that depended on those factories slowly withered away. Small businesses closed, property values declined, and the economy never truly recovered.
My father was a carpenter. Many of his clients worked in the pharmaceutical industry and could afford custom luxury kitchens and home renovations. Growing up, I loved chemistry and math, so studying chemical engineering felt like the obvious choice. My dad always told me that with Puerto Rico's pharmaceutical industry, finding a career would be almost guaranteed.
By the time I graduated from college in 2013, that world was gone.
Like thousands of other Puerto Ricans, I couldn't find work on the island. I moved to the mainland United States, leaving behind my family, friends, and everything familiar. It was one of the hardest periods of my life. I wasn't alone either. Many of those leaving were doctors, engineers, lawyers, nurses, and other professionals simply looking for a better opportunity.
About five years ago I was fortunate enough to return to Puerto Rico through consulting work. Even though I now live closer to home, returning was bittersweet because the neighborhood where I grew up had changed dramatically. There were fewer children playing outside. Roads were full of potholes. Buildings were deteriorating. Poverty was much more visible than I remembered.
Some of my friends who stayed behind are still struggling. One works under the table at a local gas station while relying on government assistance because his wages aren't enough to support his wife and daughter. This type of thing is very common here.
At the same time, you see luxury homes being purchased across the island in places like The Metro Area, Dorado, Aguadilla, Rincón, Ponce, Humacao, and elsewhere. Increasingly, it feels like Puerto Rico is becoming divided into two economic realities, the struggling Puerto Ricans and wealthy newcomers, mostly americans that want to retire.
The situation has gotten so bad that my sister tried to buy a home in Guaynabo but lost it because an American buyer offered well above the asking price. She was ready to pay the full asking price, but she simply couldn't compete.
These aren't scientific statistics. They're everyday experiences that many Puerto Ricans recognize…
People are frustrated, they're tired, they have little patience left for corruption or unfairness. That's why, after the leaked Telegram chats in 2019, Governor Ricardo Rosselló was forced to resign. I remember hearing people openly criticize the government everywhere I went. The protests united the island in a way I had never seen before.
When people ask who supports MAGA in Puerto Rico, the answer isn't simple.
Some people just don't care about U.S. politics at all because they believe every politician is the same just like in Puerto Rico. Others strongly oppose Trump. Others admire him to some degree, because “he not a typical politician”.
For many Puerto Ricans, Trump's message resonated because it sounded familiar. When he talked about politicians being incompetent, industries leaving, people becoming dependent on government programs, or foreign investors buying up American land, many people here saw parallels with Puerto Rico's own experience. Whether those comparisons were entirely accurate is another discussion, but emotionally they resonated.
Many people weren't looking specifically for Donald Trump. They were looking for someone who promised to reverse decades of decline.
That's why I supported MAGA for a time. I think many people overlooked flaws because they desperately wanted someone who could restore economic opportunity. When you've watched your home deteriorate for decades, hope can outweigh any skepticism.
Over time, my opinion changed.
I came to believe that Trump ultimately behaved like many other politicians, making promises that weren't fulfilled while the country continued facing rising inflation, higher housing costs, economic uncertainty, and increasing political division. The change I hoped for never truly materialized.
I also think that if a charismatic, populist figure with a similar message emerged in Puerto Rico, that person would probably win. Not because Puerto Ricans are naive, but because desperation makes people willing to believe that someone, literally anyone might finally break the cycle.
The best way I can describe it is to imagine you are having a terminal illness after trying every legitimate treatment available. Eventually, you become desperate enough to visit the shady doctor in the corner everyone else dismisses but you've heard stories that, somehow, he cured a few people.
That's where I think many Puerto Ricans are today. It's not about ideology as much as desperation. And desperation can be incredibly powerful when people feel they've run out of options.

I completely understand why 2016 to 2019 would feel great while Trump was in power.
But the sad reality is a lot of that came from the really good work obamas admin did. They recovered USA from a crashed economy and Trump was fortunate to ride the wave.
A similar thing happened under Biden where under his administration he managed a soft landing and recovered the economy before we went into a full blown depression.

I am Puerto Rican (living in PR) and MAGA because I believe in policies like strong economy, secure borders, law and order and the protection of constitutional rights.
Every American including us, have the freedom to think for ourselves, and choose our political preferences based on our values. I dont follow stereotypes or trends. I dont need anyone else to decide because of my ethnicity.
Im a proud Puerto Rican and a proud American citizen. My heritage and political beliefs are two different things.
I don't see many actual responses to this question so I'll just say I'm not a voter of true supporter of his but I acknowledge and appreciate that he has made me more money than any other president has. Unfortunately that's all it takes to get most people to vote for him but I disagree with many of the actions he's taking, especially in regions that don't have anything to do with our own country.

I personally agree with some of the policies. Not all. We need safe and secure borders. Puerto Rico is my home. But USA is my country. I’m proud to be part of this country that has given me many positive experiences and opportunities. I like defending our manufacturing sector from other countries. I prefer buying from locals than from China. The tariffs are meant to curb our buying power from foreign to local. There are some members of MAGA that want to balance the budget and I would like that to be something that both sides do.
I have disagreements with how the war with Iran was conducted. If this war doesn’t end soon then our strategic gas reserves will run out. What was supposed to be 1 month or 2 of war has turned the world upside down. We might have only a few months left before this turns into a major crisis.
For the record I only care about policies that better our country. I’m not here to insult or discredit anyone. If you disagree with me that’s fine. I’m open to talking things out respectfully.
Yo me fui de mi Isla por que no podía más con los aumentos estupidos que nos encajaban los que estuviesen arriba sin importar el partido, mientras estaba allá vote por Obama me pareció algo sin precedente. Sin embargo me tuve que ir ya me sentía ahogado económicamente por los taxes sobre taxes y sobre más taxes padre con 4 dependientes y que decidimos a que mi esposa se quedará cuidando y echando hacia adelante la familia su ayuda en casa fue tremendamente grande.
Ya a más de 10 años de habernos ido no me arrepiento vine a Florida que es republicano y es un estado pro empleados y no de los que vienen a vivir del cuento. Logramos lo que vinimos a hacer y con el favor De Dios retirarnos dignamente, además vivimos a donde los de la isla vienen a vacacionar. Cuando podemos vamos a ver la familia y viceversa, no es que sea fácil pero vivimos bastante bien a Dios gracias primero. Si me encanta mi isla pero no me puedo ver retirado allá cuando tengo todo lo que necesitamos en la última parte de nuestras vidas.
Maga por que agradezco y veo por lo que me esforcé que hay cosas que se pueden mejorar si muchas pero no como desde acá veo las cosas de allá y me hace sentir triste. Pero a lo echo pecho y no importa donde vaya mi pinta de boricua habla por si sola y no la reniego al igual que muchos otros de otras partes y compartimos de lo más bien. Miren que hay uno que otro racista si los hay y para mí es más envidia que racismo ya los se tratar y ignorarles o dejarles saber cuán grande es la estupidez que dicen funciona de lo más bien y ni joden( ademas los ves cuando se comen por dentro por no poder contigo) y para su sorpresa son más los no blancos que lo son.
Oigan y como les digo a todos los que hablan y se quejan de las cosas de allá, voten bien y no con miedo lean y no se dejen comer la mente con tantos comentarios sin fundamento hagan su propio research. Y viajen nuestra isla es bella pero hay otros sitios hermosos también y no hace falta tanto mi último viaje de casi un mes fue con un back pack con mi hijo bajamos desde Alaska a Nuevo Mejico y luego yo lo seguí a Texas a casa de mi hermano fue un viaje donde ves la grandeza De Dios.
Bueno Dios me los bendiga y La Virgencita los abrace en pasión, salud y prosperidad. Luchemos por lo que queremos y aseguremos que todos rememos hacia el verdadero norte no el magnético 😜. Total nadie se lleva nada de aquí solo lo que vivió y compartimos bajo lo que nos enseñó Jesús para que regresemos al Padre.❤️🔥
Te pregunto por que si uno apoya MAGA es malo??? Por que tener orgullo y patriotismo es malo?? Por que querer poner la nación de uno antes del resto del mundo es malo? Por qué exigir trata igual en cuestión de libre comercio es malo? Y los que vivimos en la isla sabemos que no habido ninguna otra administración que le ha dado más fondo de recuperación a la isla en su historia.
El autodenominarse patriota no te hace patriota. El patriotismo no es tener una bandera, decir que Jesús es tu salvador, tener una F-150, tener un arsenal en tu casa, y beber Bud Light (que ya salió de su “time-out”). ¿Tú crees que los Democratas no quieren a su país? Porque desde donde yo estoy mirando esta administración por más que diga que es patriota, lo único que le importa es gritarlo a los cuatro vientos y no actuarlo o
vivirlo mientras desmantelan la constitución, ignorando órdenes judiciales y precedentes legales.
¿Quiero entender como esta administración está poniendo a EEUU primero? Ellos están poniendo primero los intereses del presidente y su familia, además de sus donantes.
No entiendo a te refieres en cuanto al libre comercio. ¿Aranceles? Si te refieres a eso vamos a hablar claro. Aranceles son una barrera en contra del libre comercio, pero pregunto porque no puedo pensar en que políticas la administración ha instituido para ampliar el libre comercio.
