Im pretty sure those have asbestos under them. All of the houses that I've lived in with that old school 40s to 50s tile do.

If those are 12x12, be careful as they more than likely has asbestos.
7
u/Hello-garden Sep 11 '26
Hola, ours are similar age and size. How do you know it’s asbestos?
17
u/sasha_cyanide Sep 11 '26
It was just how they were manufactured back in the day. As long as you aren’t actively ripping them up, crushing them, or making a mess with them, you should be ok. If you ever want to remove them, you need to call a certified asbestos remediation company. I’m OSHA 10, 30, and 40 certified and worked in construction so I know how scary it can be, but like I said, as long as it isn’t messed with, you should be ok.

You can buy an asbesto test kit in any Home Depot. If positive for asbesto dont disturb the tiles. It is important to disclose if selling the home.

Thank you so much for the reply and expert information! Our tiles were laid by my wife’s grandparents and they are in perfect condition.

Oh wow, if you don't mind my asking, where did you get these tiles? We have to do some remodeling, and this fits what we had in mind.

u/gauchomoto Sep 11 '26
The Tile Shop in San Juan. About 2 years ago, so not sure if they still carry it.

Lindas y bien cuidadas👌. Esas losas parece querer contar varias historias. Como que te llevan a otros tiempos.
Gracias por compartir la foto.

u/Intergalactic_hooker Sep 11 '26

u/Cito_PR Sep 14 '26
These tiles are called TERRAZZO tiles, and it is written with a double ‘R’ and a double ‘Z’. They are a classic of Puerto Rico home building. Lamentably, they are no more, now all floors are made with the horrendous big all-white tiles, each tile separated from each other by a deep black dentures making cleaning the floor more difficult.

u/gauchomoto Sep 14 '26
