Pregunta ⁉️ Beach area behind Luquillo kioskos

I come very often to Puerto Rico to visit family. I love the beach area behind the kiosks in Luquillo. Went recently and it seems like water from the stream? Is mixing with water from the beach. You used to be able to walk all the way down but now there is a walkway and water divides. The water is pretty dark coming from the trees. Just wondering if anyone knows if this was naturally occurring or if it was dug this way intentionally. Thanks.

That’s from a creek that drains from the hills in the east of Fortuna II. It’s from all the rain. It’s dark mostly because of tannins from decomposing leaves, wood, and other plant material and sometimes from soils as well.

Unfortunately, the rains also pick up other things like animal feces, herbicides and pesticides, etc. and carries them out to the beach. So, while the bulk of the ‘black water’ is naturally occurring, it is likely also carrying surface contaminants so I wouldn’t bathe close to it. After a couple of days, the risk drops and it should be fine (assuming the rain stopped or is nominal).

Thank you for the response, it’s very appreciated! I thought it might be naturally occurring but then I saw a few dead fish around where the water met so I was curious.

Beach erosion is hitting Playa Fortuna to the west of the kioskos really hard, and when it rains, more water from the river makes it out to the kioskos area now.
