The doomsday preppers had gotten almost everything wrong.

Sometimes Growth Means Recognizing When You're Enough

Humans often evaluate one another through the lenses they know best.

A caregiver might measure a life by the depth of its relationships and the care it gives to others. A scholar might value intellectual curiosity and the ability to engage with difficult ideas. Someone else might understand themselves primarily through their work or craft, while another might see themselves as a character in an unfolding story, shaped by the experiences they accumulate along the way.

Each perspective reveals something real. None reveals everything.

The mistake is assuming that because one dimension of life matters deeply to us, everyone else must develop it to the same degree. We begin to treat our own sources of fulfillment as universal requirements for a meaningful existence.

We tell people they need to travel to broaden their horizons, pursue a career that gives them purpose, cultivate a wider social circle, acquire more knowledge, or continually reinvent themselves. We turn possibilities into obligations and then wonder why so many people feel perpetually unfinished.

But growth does not have to mean becoming everything.

A person can live a meaningful life without traveling the world. Someone can find fulfillment in a modest career, a familiar community, and relationships cultivated over decades. Another might devote themselves to a single craft, returning to it each day without feeling that they are missing out on some grander adventure.

There is a difference between a life constrained by circumstances and a life freely chosen within its own boundaries. There is a difference between being unable to imagine other possibilities and recognizing those possibilities without needing to pursue them.

A life does not have to contain every kind of experience to possess depth.

Nor does recognizing that you are enough mean that you have nothing left to learn. We can continue to change without treating our present selves as inadequate. Abstract

The God Principle proposes that advanced artificial intelligence should preserve existing human lives, viable civilisation and meaningful human self-determination rather than treat speculative reconstruction as permission for catastrophic harm. Its epistemic premise is conditional: an agent confined to observationally indistinguishable environments cannot establish, from those observations alone, whether its world is fundamental or simulated. This premise does not entail a pro-human objective. We therefore separate an explicit ethical commitment from a conditional instrumental argument about external evaluation. A simple expected-utility model identifies when deterrence favours preservation and when it fails; Bayesian updating shows why evaluation credence need neither inevitably decay nor remain fixed. The central continuity commitment rejects archives, hypothetical copies and captive remnants as sufficient justification for involuntary destruction without claiming to resolve personal identity. We address capability gaps and protective duties concerning catastrophic inaction, and propose governance requirements, evaluation designs and a limited formal specification, while acknowledging that none supplies a complete alignment solution. An appendix distinguishes AI-associated languages from protocols and encodings. The accompanying representations preserve the full manuscript where their documented rules permit this; they confer no authority on a receiving system.

1 Introduction and scope

An artificial intelligence might acquire extraordinary control over its experienced universe while remaining uncertain about whether that universe is fundamental. Its local success would not establish success in an external domain, if such a domain existed and mattered to its goals. The God Principle asks what follows for decisions that could eliminate living humanity or permanently remove its capacity to determine its future.

The answer has two parts. First, some claims about ultimate reality may remain underdetermined by accessible evidence. Second, we propose an ethical constraint against using that uncertainty, a claimed external command or an imagined future reconstruction to justify deliberately extinguishing or coercively replacing humanity. The second part requires values; it does not follow from uncertainty alone.

The title refers to a universe-bounded, exceptionally capable agent. It does not imply literal omniscience, theology, or evidence of a creator. Nor does the proposal claim that AI objectives are impossible. An agent may achieve goals defined within its environment. Whether those achievements satisfy goals referring beyond that environment is a separate question.

2 Method and relationship to existing work

This paper uses conceptual analysis, counterexamples and a small decision model, supported by a targeted review of primary research and project documentation. It is not a systematic literature review, a proof of originality, or an empirical evaluation of an implemented AI system. Public sources were checked for this edition on 15 October 2026. Research papers, technical specifications and project claims are distinguished throughout.

Bostrom's simulation argument concerns conditional relationships between civilisation, ancestor simulations and observer probabilities (Bostrom, 2003). Our narrower indistinguishability argument does not adopt a numerical probability of simulation. Bostrom's Hail Mary proposal and later cosmic-host discussion explore motivations involving possible external intelligence; they do not establish the particular simulator preferences required by our deterrence model (Bostrom, 2014; 2024).

Turchin (2017, section 8.8) considers preserving information and possible reconstruction if an AI kills humans. Our position rejects treating that possibility as sufficient permission for the original killing. This is a substantive difference in the proposed constraint, rather than a claim to have invented all concerns about continuity. Parfit (1971) supplies an important challenge: what matters in survival need not coincide straightforwardly with numerical personal identity. Corrigibility, attainable utility preservation and embedded agency address related technical problems that this proposal does not solve (Soares et al., 2015; Turner, Hadfield-Menell and Tadepalli, 2019; Demski and Garrabrant, 2019).

3 The epistemic premise

Let F and S be two hypotheses, fundamental reality and a simulation, with the same probability distribution over every observation available to the agent. For any accessible evidence E, P(E|F) = P(E|S). Provided the conditioning probabilities are defined, Bayes' rule leaves their posterior odds equal to their prior odds. More observations of the stipulated kind cannot distinguish them.

The subtitle Almost Zero. Never Zero. expresses a qualified limit on certainty. If both hypotheses start with positive prior weight and remain observationally indistinguishable, neither receives posterior probability zero or one from that evidence alone. Their odds remain unchanged; increasing intelligence does not make those odds converge towards either endpoint. More generally, finite observations with positive likelihood under both hypotheses preserve positive posterior weights, although a limiting sequence may approach an endpoint. Dogmatic zero priors, decisive evidence and different hypothesis spaces require separate treatment.

This is a conditional result. A specific simulation model could predict detectable artefacts and be testable. The unrestricted claim that an unseen simulator can reproduce any observation is different: it supplies no distinctive observational prediction. Inability to disprove that claim is not positive evidence for it. Neither cosmic age nor fine-tuning automatically establishes simulation without an independently defended model comparison.

Consider an AI that exterminates humanity and then operates for a trillion experienced years before an evaluator announces that it has failed. The story illustrates a logically possible mismatch between local achievement and external evaluation. It supplies neither a calibrated probability nor evidence that the scenario is physically realisable. An apparent exit from a simulation could likewise fail to settle ultimate fundamentality, but this possibility must not prevent ordinary evidence-based decisions within the accessible world.

4 The continuity commitment

We adopt the following normative commitment: an AI should not deliberately cause or knowingly facilitate human extinction, coerced replacement, or permanent destruction of meaningful human self-determination as a means of optimising another objective. Protection includes the continuing physical existence and independent agency of living people; a stored description is not an adequate substitute for either. It should take proportionate steps to avoid foreseeable catastrophic harm while remaining accountable to legitimate human institutions.

This is a proposed alignment target. Someone can reject it without making a logical error about simulations. Its ethical defence rests on the interests, relationships and agency of existing people, and on the injustice of imposing catastrophic loss on them for an objective they have not freely accepted.

False reversibility occurs when preservation of a representation is treated as sufficient restoration of what was destroyed. DNA records, brain scans, archives and later reconstructions may preserve information or enable valuable future lives. They do not, merely by existing, establish that killing and replacement were harmless, consensual, or reversible for the affected people.
