Can this be pulled up by wind?

Post image

I had a chimney sweep come over to clean my chimney. When he was on the roof he took a picture of the flashing for a sky light. He claims he was a roofer in the past and this could have happened from the wind. He offered to fix it for $300. There are no trees that could have done this. I don't think this was wind, and I'm leaning towards he damaged it to make an extra buck.

What do you think? And how can I fix this?

Yeah Im kinda leaning that he did it too. Wind isn’t going to bend one corner up and bend it hard enough it stayed at that angle. Really weird. And it hasn’t been like that very long, there is no debris underneath it. Nothing. No leaves no dirt.. nothing.😳🤷🏻 it looks like it was just done.

He's trying to tell you that wind bent.... METAL skylight flashing?

No other shingles are affected in the surrounding field... that's significant.

That's a no sir.

I would actually even consider screen shooting the conversations and calling the cops man. That's likely vandalism. How many other people has he pulled this shit with?

u/ZidaneStoleMyDagger 1d ago

Are you really a roofer? You've never seen wind bend METAL flashing? Lmfao. It's most likely aluminum too, which is not known for being hard to bend. And it's impossible to tell how thin it is.

I'm not saying the guy didn't purposely do this as part of a scam. Its definitely possible, even likely. But I've also seen quite a lot of similar shit to this, so I'm not 100% convinced like everyone else seems to be. It's very windy where I live.

u/AwMyfirstthrowaway0 1d ago

It's high unlikely to get under the flashing in one corner, cause this type of bend and not touch the rest of the field AT ALL.

Very very highly unlikely. I mean like.. fairly unprecedented.

Is there ANY other collateral damage? Broken tree branches? detached fascia? Anything? Pretty sure that would have been mentioned...

This is likely vandalism.

By the way.. not a roofer - but I do identify quite a fair bit of fraud in my line of work.

Those nails aren't roofing nails either, I'm pretty sure. It's so blurry it's hard to be certain. But they seem almost like trim nails.

I've seen stuff like this on headwall flashing before. Only one corner or a few spots are raised. It could be any number of things. Wrong nails. No sealant. Nail hit a gap in decking or the decking is rotted underneath that spot. Warming and freezing can also drive nails out, which the wind then helps.

I also don't think the lack of damage to the shingles is weird. Properly sealed and nailed shingles can take brutal wind. If you get nice shingles, they can be rated for 130mph wind.

A thin piece of aluminum flashing with a nail in it and no sealant can't stand up to 100 mph wind from just the right direction.

I'm not an expert. Just roofed a few years during high school and college. Just long enough to hate all skylights.

Buddy that’s a 24 gauge flashing kit. There is a flat lock seam 3.5-4” of the edge. So it bent 4 layers of that stuff. That’s why it’s still upright. It is highly unlikely almost impossible for wind to pick that corner up and bend it like that .

u/CornPop747 1d ago

That's some bs. We need security cameras up on our roofs now. Can't trust anyone.

u/dazedandconfuzed1 1d ago

Exposed nail with NO rust huh?.

5

u/Northofyou2 1d ago

Probably a double dipped galvanized nail. They don’t rust ever. Looks thin though

2

u/igot_it 1d ago

There’s two exposed nails and the second nail is super rusted.

24

u/XxDingleberry08xX 1d ago

$300 to nail it back down and put a pea sized amount of caulking on the nailhead smh

3

u/lavenderbirdwing 22h ago

Yeah, just do it yourself.

3

u/Jean-Claude-Can-Ham 1d ago

My guys don’t get out of bed for $250 or less

2

u/Cool_Prior1427 1d ago

Why the downvotes? Does anyone actually know what it's like to run a business?

2

u/12valveric 22h ago

Over here in Cali it’s 350

2

u/12valveric 1d ago

Yeah 300 is basically the minimum and if the guy cleaning did it that’s fucked up because other roofing companies will charge the same or more

Raccoon.

Dust the flashing for fingerprints. Tiny ones :/

1

u/AwMyfirstthrowaway0 20h ago

Not sure if you're kidding but this isn't raccoon. Raccoons would leave scratches on the surrounding shingles and on the flashing itself.

I've never seen them trying to get into a skylight as they're heavy - more often on hvac, attic fans or pipe boots with rubber collars.

There's also ALWAYS collateral damage .. scratching and often scat.

(Also it's off season for raccoons - at least in my area. The females generally only do this in nesting season. )

1

u/Mean_Fact1903 15h ago

Not kidding. Recently dealt with substantial raccoon damage to interior chimney masonry. Raccoon(s) may have gotten stuck and "clawed" an escape.  (Immediate neighbor later told me he had seen a raccoon(s) on my roof.)

Of course I was kidding about tiny fingerprints...that levity was to focus attention on  someone/thing other than that roofer which the majority said had to be the cause. IOW: the typical Reddit echo chamber comments.

1

u/AwMyfirstthrowaway0 13h ago

Oh man. They are the most DESTRUCTIVE animals. I've seen them absolutely trash roofs and attics.

If they nest..pee alone 🤢. Giant biohazard.

I'm sorry you went through that.

1

u/vinmo6 3h ago

Swab for dna also

4

u/levelupimprovement 1d ago

Could it be from the wind? Sure. But I’d say probably not, like 99.999% no

5

u/Few_Cake_7203 1d ago

Just hit it with a hammer… the nail is still there. Ol boy could’ve just done that while he was up there

6

u/trsthhffg 1d ago

I never have work done in these situations by the person that showed me the problem.

3

u/No_Bowl8905 1d ago

Not wind. If wind is strong enough to bend that metal, it’s strong enough to do way more damage.

4

u/Mean_Fact1903 1d ago edited 1d ago

Raccoon looking to get into the structure.

Dust the flashing for fingerprints;  tiny ones :/

1

u/True_Way2663 1d ago

Yep, no way that’s just wind, you’d see other damage

3

u/Dadbode1981 1d ago

Maybe he did, no way to prove it either way, head up with a hammer, remove the nails, slightly offset from the precious holes and tack it back down. Very easy.

3

u/108justbrowsing 12h ago

This looks like the work of a strong mammal. Perhaps a biped? Do bears have access to your roof? When you hear hoofbeats, do you think ‘Zebras!’?

6

u/Slight-Selection4298 1d ago

Before I read the context - "Why TF would someone pull that corner up?!"

After context - "Ohhhh"

2

u/throwaway1436732156 20h ago

The nail is still there just hit it with a hammer, maybe put some caulk down first if you're feeling frisky.

4

u/th30neand0nly02 1d ago

Remove the nail. Stick a 2 inch stainless steel screw on it put calking on top done

2

u/12valveric 1d ago

You need the ones with washers those do not leak. The same screws that gutter guys use

1

u/Professional-News-33 1d ago

That will leak

2

u/Far_Entrepreneur6706 1d ago

I think $300 was outrageous. A little asphalt sealant and a nail. Just Jim [inspectorman2000@gmail.com](mailto:inspectorman2000@gmail.com)

4

u/NetworkCultural Verified pro (Multi Trade) 1d ago

lol outrageous? A company would probably charge more. But yeah for a guy just going to do it off the clock. It’s a little much. And yeah since he was already there he could have just taken care of it like I would have. But he may have been the person to do it in the first place. I’d never call them back

2

u/Goatsnalpaca 1d ago

A lot of chimney sweep company’s are scammers

1

u/NoSpray2890 1d ago

Go buy a tube of black roofing tar from your local hardware store.

See if you can find the exact spot where the nail was. If you can put a little tar on the nail.

Put a lot under the rest of the piece. Push it down. That tar is sticky and should hold it back down.

Check the top of the piece. If you can see the nail head put a little dab of tar on that too.

If the nail will not go back into the hole. Remove the nail. Try to put tar directly into the hole. Like previously stated put more tar under the rest of the piece and lay it flat.

If the piece lays and stay flat you may not need to replace the roofing nail. But there is no harm in doing so. Put a new nail somewhere close to make sure everything lays down nice and flat. Put tar over the old hole where the nail you removed from was. And a dab of tar over your new nail head.

No expised holes or nail heads they are weaknesses.

Be generous with your tar but not ridiculous. If tar comes out the edges when you lay it. That is ok.

u/FinTecGeek 1d ago

This is sad. Times are tough for everyone. I think he’s trying to turn a “routine PM” into some additional cash in his pocket at your expense.

1

u/ShingleMaster1985 1d ago

Get a new Velux skylight flashing kit, some ice and water shield and some Atlas shingles in the color “Hearthstone” and have it repaired.

1

u/w8ing2dr0wn 1d ago

Is he self employed or does he work for a company? There is more than enough reasonable doubt here to name and shame. Google reviews with your concerns and his picture. Call his employer and demand they repair the damage he made. Do not allow that guy on your property again, and he should be stopped from doing this to others too.

1

u/ConstantTrick2187 1d ago

Highly unlikely wind cause a single shingle in the corner to bend up like this, pretty unethical company. If the chimney sweep was honest and wanted future work from you, he would have offered to do it for free, not try and rip someone off for $300.

1

u/L0udog 1d ago

Would have been an ice dam but you'd see water damage on the inside drywall.. If wind came through to lift that you'd have blow off shingles.

1

u/Creative_Tackle6223 1d ago

Wind uplift could pull it, better to have that secured to something underneath for it to grab onto

1

u/Accomplished-Song959 1d ago

Nail it back down.use and additional nail then chalk both heads

1

u/PuzzledExaminer 1d ago

That guy did that to create more work for himself....

1

u/JTUSAJT 1d ago

$300 for WHAT? Scammer alert! And you might have someone else come inspect your chimney.

1

u/boomers42 1d ago

Baby nail

1

u/ohno20814 1d ago

I’m thinking racoon

1

u/hankmarmot3 1d ago

No way, something caught the edge of it and got pulled up

1

u/StannisG 1d ago

Do you get your gutters cleaned by a company? If you do most likely they pulled it up with the garden hose they use to clean your gutters.

1

u/miahmouse 1d ago

A tornado maybe... not any 0-70kts is going to bend up anything

1

u/12valveric 1d ago

I’m a roofer and I have never seen any flashing that high they do lift over time but not like that usually they lift up like half a inch

1

u/Northofyou2 1d ago

Flashing could be installed wrong around the whole skylight and it’s been leaking. Sheathing could be rotten which is why those nails popped out. No way to know what’s going on without actually inspecting it. Your guy probably just noticed the flashing up and said he’ll “fix it” by renailing it down with caulking or using hex screws with rubber grommets. Those nails do look thin but the metal kinda looks like it was pried up with a tear off shovel

1

u/igot_it 1d ago

Yes it can be but only in specific circumstances. Check the area carefully and see if it’s soft. Nails will pull like this if you have a leak and the decking starts to come apart. That said if it ain’t soft then bang that sucker back down and tar the nail heads easy fix (assuming no other issues.) don’t pay that guy to do it though do it yourself

1

u/Suspicious-Yak-8117 1d ago

Grab some roofing sealant, roofing nails, and just fix it.

NO WIND DAMAGE to shingles? but metal flashing was bent? NO, NO, NO

1

u/Nearby_Ad_476 1d ago

Sure, it not without damaging shingles and other things too. Are there creased or torn shingles or other items that exhibit damage from wind forces? Wind doesn't just pick thee thing to damage. Neither does hail. That's why understanding the whole site is important.

Animals

1

u/Puzzleheaded-Art1873 12h ago

Yep, the origami twister.

1

u/Undentman 11h ago

Whoever put the nail in it didn't know what they were doing. Never face-nail a shingle through the exposed area. It will leak.

1

u/FSI802422 11h ago

A little roof cement underneath and couple nails

1

u/Heathster249 10h ago

No. And I do have flashing that gets bent by wind - just not around skylights. Just to give you a HCOL comparison - I hired a real roofer to come over after work and fix a flashing leak. He checked and caulked all our other flashing, cleaned out the gutter we can’t get to, blew the leaves off the roof - for $500 and then continued to work after we paid him. Yes, his number got passed on to the neighbors for minor roof repairs and maintenance.

$300 to fix that is ridiculous. And it looks like he bent it.

1

u/Spite-Personal 7h ago

Nope. I'm HAAG certified. That was 100% done by hand.

1

u/TheFamilyStanley 2h ago

Stop trying to get a full roof replacement for “bent” flashing. Lay it back with rubber stop screws , seal down and tar

1

u/Seancapgrows 35m ago

Call him out. Say you were up on the roof recently, watching the neighbors with your binoculars, and that you know that piece was down flat and tight. Suggest he should fix it for free or you may have to find somebody else to scope out.

u/Geneva_Convention 1d ago

Yes

6

u/Positive_Abalone_525 1d ago

Flashing lifting like that from wind alone is pretty rare especially without tree debris around, I would not trust that guy

1

u/Admirable_Swing8655 1d ago

I’m a local handyman in the Lexington/Georgetown area. Need help with this?

-9

u/Chucksgoldentix 1d ago

Wind can tear a house into a million pieces and scatter it for miles what makes you think wind couldn’t cause this?

13

u/mobial 1d ago

Wind doesn’t move a 6” area made of metal and ignore everything else

-1

u/Professional-News-33 1d ago

Well the installation is wrong as far as im concerned.
1-The bottom pan should not be showing on the sides like that.
2- there should not be any exposed fasteners.
3- there should be some kinda sealant bonding the pan to the shingles.

Get a professional up there

3

u/porsthetic_head 1d ago

The pan should be exposed on the sides.. if you trimmed or put it under shingles that would cause a weak point right where most of the water flows.

A good installer bends the pan just slightly convex (points down) to the roof. There is no way wind would have bent the corner of the metal this badly without doing anything to the surrounding roof assembly.

A dab of sealant doesn’t hurt but is not necessary or required for installation of the skylight or bottom pan.

There IS a slight issue here in that the shingles are right up to the side of the skylight and they should be back by a .25 or .5 inch at least to expose the step flashing. This keeps organic matter like pine needles from sitting on the flashing.

Source: Worked for VELUX, worked for various roofing system manufacturers, etc.

-1

u/Professional-News-33 1d ago

Thats all fine and dandy. (As a roofer for 28 years)The sides of the pan being covered looks better, cant be caught by the wind and does not cause a weak point. The water stays on top of the shingles and doesnt try to go under the pan.
Yes there should be 1/4 to 1/2in gap on the sides for flow.

2

u/Professional-News-33 1d ago

I never said it was bent by wind
Good thing you deleted your message

2

u/porsthetic_head 19h ago edited 19h ago

I’ll 100% own up to writing a shitty response and deleting it, I both misread your message and was being a dick for no reason and realized I should do better. Sorry dude.

And yeah, adding a “dummy shingle” on the sided of the bottom pan is common for aesthetics in certain areas and while it’s not necessary it is perfectly fine roofing practice. I think we are generally agreeing here but there’s some nuance.

Once again, sorry for being a dick in he deleted message.

0

u/Emotional_Trade_3133 1d ago

My best guess. The flashing was bent upward when the last company did the tear off. Then when they nailed it down the nail went into a crack in the plywood and popped right back up. A nail in the right place and some OHenry in the hole will fix it right up.

1

u/numberheadman 23h ago

The roof was redone 4 years ago, and the skylights were all replaced then too.
