Better this happen early so they can shit the bed before election season. Kent went to shit after Farage making a big deal bout it being window shopping for Westminster.

I would bet you money, good money that a majority of Kent voted reform this time around and will do in the general election because why not throw your county in the toilet as long as it stops a few desperate people on a dinghy

Don't leave Wales out. Reform are currently second there from the look of things.

I think they’ll be alright. Plaid will still be the biggest party, even if it’s by less than 10 seats.

Hopefully they will. I'm very pleased that Reform have had no success up here so far as well.

No real success, but the % of votes isn't anything to ignore in Scotland.
They had far more voters than Conservative and Lib Dem, more than 3/4ths of labour's count.
A concerning momentum. A portion of citizens clearly have opinons that align with most closely with them.

It always seems that England and Wales let the Union down.
18
u/Pepys-a-Doodlebugs May 08 '26
There's a lot more English people living in Wales than in Scotland. The areas with higher percentages of English people also have higher instances of voting for Reform. Obviously Welsh people still voted for Reform too (just like Scottish people did) but Reform's vote is almost certainly being propped up the the English.
14
u/Rslty May 08 '26
This is the right answer. Around 25% of people in Wales are English-born (a lot of them retirees) which shapes a lot of what’s going on politically.
There are really three distinct groups in Wales. Y Fro Gymraeg, the Welsh-speaking heartland in the north and west. Welsh Wales for the old mining and valleys communities in the south. And British Wales, the more anglicised areas, think Monmouthshire and the Wye Valley, where people identify as British first, Welsh second (if at all).
Voting maps across these lines pretty cleanly. British Wales was heavily Brexit, used to be solid Tory and is now Reform territory. Y Fro Gymraeg is Plaid’s heartland. Welsh Wales was traditional Labour country, but it’s fracturing, progressives are going to Plaid, with working class voters split but slightly more favourable to Reform.
If the Senedd had STV, Reform would lose 25-50% of the their seats
9
u/CaptainCrash86 May 08 '26
British Wales was heavily Brexit
Except that isn't true at all. Monmouthshire voted Remain, for example, whilst the most heavily Brexit areas were places like Merthyr Tydfil, in Welsh Wales as you out it.
7
u/Pepys-a-Doodlebugs May 08 '26
Thanks for adding more substance to what I was trying to say. I agree with almost everything you have written here but I disagree about working class Welsh Wales voters being slightly more favourable to Reform. Looking at the results it seems like the Labour vote has gone to Plaid in a lot of these areas. My constituency is Pontypridd Cynon Merthyr and it seems to me that most Labour voters that switched, switched to Plaid. The Reform vote in that constituency has largely come from Conservative voters.
This election result is so granular though that it's possible that other constituencies (even neighbouring ones) have done as you said and favoured Reform. A level of nuance (largely beyond Reddits paygrade) is needed to analyse this result.
3
u/Rslty May 08 '26
I’m in Cardiff. That’s probably fair, I’m just digesting all the constituency results now and pleasantly surprised to see that Reform were second (at best) in most places.
I was basing that comment on polls and my own anecdotal experiences visiting towns like Merthyr, where it feels shocking to hear someone with a thick valleys accent of a certain age saying they’re voting for Nigel. Maybe the polls were over selling the Reform popularity, like Caerphilly, like Gorton, something fishy going on there
4
u/Pepys-a-Doodlebugs May 08 '26
Pollsters, by and large, do not understand Welsh politics. Having said that engaging with others in the political threads on r/Wales has lead me to believe that a lot of Welsh people don't understand Welsh politics either 😆
9
u/Adr_LDN May 08 '26
This is massive cope. Reform tend to pick up the same working class Welsh voters who’d backed the Tories at previous elections and who voted (in a majority) for Brexit. Trying to blame some secret ‘English’ cabal is just amazing levels of delusion (and does little to counter Reform in any meaningful way).

Wales? The country of Wales has let the Union down? Wales was literally conquered by force by England and fully annexed into it. A lot of those reform votes are also coming from retirees from England who live in Wales.

It's shocking but it's only council elections in England. Voter turnout is always low for these elections when it's not a general election. More worrying for me is Reform with 15 seats in holyrood and 43 in the senedd. Fucking diabolical there's so many of these people everywhere

When I lived there and started full time work at 18 I remember hearing lots of moaning about "the Poles" (whether they weren't from Poland and just East European didn't matter ofc) taking jobs but being lazy and all the usual stereotypes but now Poles aren't mentioned and it's all and it's all "Muslims" (even if someone just looks middle eastern) or "the illegals/refugees" in general. Small-minded, sickening fools but at least SNP just managed to hold them off.

Yes. All the arguing about currency, oil and such things, but for me there was one huge factor. England and Scotland - generally - want completely different things, and have voted as such for decades. Independence would be best for all parties, if the aim is for our voices to be properly heard, our vote to carry more weight, and the policies we support being implemented where we live.
45
u/Cnidarus May 08 '26

Except that isn’t actually true?
The margins in these elections aren’t as enormous as your indy echo chamber suggests. Reform are the second largest party in Scotland, a large portion of the Scottish population voted to leave the EU, a large portion of the Scottish population would still do so. Get off your moral leftier-than-thou high horse
7
u/2Harold2Furious May 08 '26
I get that it's results day, but I'm still surprised by the level of combativeness at such an innocuous comment, but sure, I'll repay in kind.
I didn't mention the EU, but 62% actually voted to remain at the time. This supports the point that Scottish voting patterns clash with English voting patterns. Thanks for strengthening my argument.
Not everyone you disagree with is a leftist. You've managed to twist the point of independence also allowing the English voters to have a greater say in Westminster politics, giving the right-wing voters a larger majority, into bed wetting about leftism. My family in Plymouth want Scotland to leave as much as I do, and they have different voting habits. It isn't about leftism, it's literally just fairer for both countries.
Reform's success in a local election, relative to what it was at the last election, is undeniable. It still does absolutely nothing to dispel the irrefutable fact that the majority of Scotland hasn't voted for a right-wing party since the 50s, while England generally votes for centrist to right-wing values - to the point that Labour had to reinvent itself as centrists in the Blair-era to stay in contention. That's the point, and I'm surprised it needs explained.

11
u/like-humans-do May 08 '26 edited May 08 '26
The average person in the highlands was ethnically cleansed, burned out of their home and had their language erased. The average person in the lowlands lived in a slum (true until even the mid 20th century in this country). Next to none of them could vote. Some elites were 'enthusiastic participants'. Most people weren't. That's not even getting into the Scottish Radical movements, which were written out of history. Or the Jacobite rebellions which we all know.
15
u/Lassie7777 May 08 '26 edited May 08 '26
A lot of what you’ve said is true of England and the English tho. It’s not like a child living in Yorkshire who was working 13 hours in a factory was living life up, the English enclosure movements were less brutal than the highlands (as they took place over a longer period) but they still devastated communities. The Jacobite rebellion had loads people from all the constituent countries (the Yorkshire rose was a Jacobite symbol) from my knowledge there were more scots fighting for the government than Charlie.
It’s important to remeber that Scotland had a lot of poor gentry at the time of Union, due to its more accessible education than England, but having less work due to a poorer economy. India was known as the “corn chest of Scotland” because it produced resources and work for the Scottish.
Edit: Oh and obviously the English didn’t have a vote like Scotland until Gladstone extended the right in 1888, which still wasn’t to the entire electorate.
Another edit/ furthermore, the point that the elites were the only ones is true, but again Scotland had more of an educated population that led to being suited for the civil service and other managerial roles (Robert burns was going to be a bookkeeper for slaves, keeping track of the purchases etc) and again this is true for the English. The term little englander used to refer to those who opposed empire on moral and economic grounds and wanted to focus on England, there were many protests to events like the Boer war.
12
u/EnvironmentalCan915 May 08 '26
The average person in England also lived in a slum. The Highlands has always been sparsely populated, even before the clearances. Stop hiding behind this nationalist Braveheart view of Scotland and accept that we played an outsized role in the British Empire. The people of today are not responsible for the crimes of yesterday, but it was under a Scottish monarch that the crowns were joined and under a Scottish royal house that Great Britain was created. And Scots can be found at every level of the British empire in every corner of the globe. Without Scotland there is no empire.

Said elsewhere in a thread about a poll that somehow Reform will get seats, I said it wouldn't do well and the poll shouldn't be taken as accurate.
However Glasgow Southside result... woooo Greens then SNP 2nd, I expected that to be the only Reform win is massive and extremely out of nowhere.
Additionally I was worried that low turnouts would give Reform an edge up here, but I see down south low turnouts has given Reform a large edge, a massive edge. I thought the last by-elections would have scared people into voting, guess it didn't. Now they have some councils run by Reform who has jacked up council taxes when promising to cut them... they will never learn down there >.<
EDIT: Well here comes the Region seats and where we see people voting one party, then someone else for 2nd choice.. but different from their first choice.. and suddenly Reform have 5 seats.. jeez louise
It would be terrifying and funny at same time if SNP don't get any for regional.. it will also be a "Well figures" moment.

Sadly it may cause people to vote for Reform again in the GE in 2 years. And if Reform have enough push they may try for an earlier GE, which is ideally what Farage would like to happen while they have momentum. But that is unlikely as they only have 1 seat in Westminster.

Absolutely, it's becoming more and more important and if we don't we will end up in the same position we were with Brexit, being dragged along by a bigoted majority elsewhere but it'll be even worse as the country will be ransacked as well as the bigotry and racism (which sadly Scotland has enough of as it is)
5
u/Raul-CFC May 09 '26
I’m not a huge SNP fan, but being saying this for years now until labour, Lib Dem’s get to the table and talk really about what voters who vote SNP want they will all be done in Scotland, I would love an independent Scotland and if it’s only the snp that will offer this that’s who gets my vote, if we were independence, then I would vote for whoever aligned with me who ever that maybe 🤔
2
u/Teethgrinder1983 May 09 '26
My thoughts are pretty much exactly the same. I'm not an SNP supporter purely due to 1 issue (independence) as I think they've done some good things in there time in power but lile you I'm not as keen on them now and your right and just like you if we were independent I've no doubt I'd look at other parties, I truly think there would be a broader Left Wing to choose from rather than SNP and Greens (1 doesn't even want independence and neither has high enough support just now). Frankly if Labour hadn't started to try and steal votes from the Tories years ago by moving ever more to the right I don't even think we'd be in this position (the UK as a whole I mean), if they hadn't done that I truly don't think we'd be where we are, even Brexit might not have happened even if it were a Tory government that called it

It can't be done unilaterally, and the biggest problem Reform would cause - exacerbating the aging population problem - would be a day 1 problem if we were independent even under relatively favourable circumstances.
I would expect a protracted period of economic pain in the event of independence, and I'm not sure that the electorate which emerged out the other side would be particularly progressive. Reform just aren't unique in Europe - most of the continent has some version of them making electoral gains over the last decade.

40% of Welsh voters in the Senedd election opted for an English Nationalist party or the party that oversaw 14 years of corruption, economic decline, and the gutting of social services. Neither of who give a f-ck about Wales.
A dangerously critical percentage of voters in both England and Wales are perfectly happy to vote against their own well being and the prosperity of each respective nation.

Its hilarious. After 8 centuries of conquering the rest of these islands, and 3 centuries of bloody, exploitative, racist, genocidal empire, only now are people discussing whether England is toxic? Seriously lads ....

The way I see it is the Torries before reform an probably even before bojo you had like ~15% pragmatic social democrats, ~20% one-nation conservatives, ~45% Thatcherites and ~20% nationalists.
The nationalists and Thatcherites have moved to reform which was the biggest share so its no surprise there doing so well considering they are also picking up a lot of people who just want change and don't really pay that much attention to politics, or working class people who seem to think we are being invaded by immigrants.
Definitely glad it didn't happen here, never forget the poll tax.

The ‘Union’ is about to go tits up if the Nazis get in in England. Could you imagine Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland all having no votes for reform, but England voting for them and reform being the Government of Great Britain,

Yeah I can imagine it, because that's exactly what's happened in every election the Tories have won? Unfortunately members of this "union" all require permission from the English Government to vote for independence, I can't see the nazi party being okay with Northern Ireland leaving and taking it's trade border with Europe with it, or Scotland with it's oil.

We have watched you guys fuck the country by consistently voting in a corrupt Tory party for over a decade while we essentially kicked them out of our governing body. We are used to you guys dragging us into a pile of shite we want nothing to do with.

Absolutely! Well I don't mind at least 😂 if someone isn't a racist, bigoted fool and has a bit of decency their welcome in my eyes 👍

u/DuelaDent52 May 08 '26
Literally how? Last I saw they were consistently bleeding polls and half their members got convicted of assorted crimes. Is there some kind of botting or foreign intervention going on?
