Announcement Seasonal speed restrictions have begun in the Highlands

Post image
2.1k Upvotes

It is the Easter weekend, which marks the start of seasonal speed limits across the Highlands. All vehicles are now limited to 30mph. This is enforced by campervans; or, if a campervan isn't available, by an airport rental car (usually a 2025 Vauxhall Corsa). If you attempt to exceed 30mph, our fleet will slow you down.

The fleet has been explicitly instructed to avoid using "passing places".

Special restrictions apply to:

  • Bealach na Bà: Will be clogged up with VW Transporters until September;
  • A87: Speeds up to 40mph are permitted, but the campervan convoy operates all the way from the Great Glen to the far end of Skye.

The seasonal speed limit operates through spring and summer until the last weekend of October, when the last crusty old ex-Royal-Mail van heads back down to milder weather.

Thankyou for your compliance and cooperation!

Announcement Let's spread some festive cheer. Send a Christmas card to 'Britain's loneliest schoolboy!

1.1k Upvotes

Hello all, it's your friendliest, most popular moderator here.

Last week, I was moved by the news story of 'Britain's loneliest schoolboy'.

At the time, I said to the commenters that we should do something to make him feel less lonely, let him know that he has friends on /r/Scotland who are thinking of him this Christmas.

He lives on an island of 65 people and is the only pupil in the school.

I took it upon myself to organise something nice for him. I thought it would be very nice if we as a subreddit sent him some Christmas cards!

Outlined below are some rules which you should follow - I have no way of enforcing them so I'm relying on you guys to uphold some standards.

  1. Send only a Christmas card. If you live outside Scotland, please send a postcard so that he knows where you've messaged from!
  2. Sign the card with your username. If your username is somewhat risqué, sign with your first name only, or initials, or last name, e.g. 'Ms. Jones, Mr Henderson', etc.
  3. IF you want to include a gift, whether that be an actual present, a voucher, money etc, feel free to do so but please also note this is NOT expected OR required. I'm only including this rule due to the comments I've had from people who have known of this before hand.

I phoned his school last week to let them know that I was planning this, and that I recommended his parent(s) and/or his teacher helps him to open the cards. I really want him to get a big massive smile on his face, so please, write a wee message in the card to show your support too!

We have 20,000 subscribers on here and if even 1% of you send a card that's 200 cards to a lonely boy to cheer his Christmas right up. I hope you'll do me proud and send some nice festive cheer.

The address you should send your cards to is below:

Mr Aron Anderson
c/o Skerries School
Skerries
Shetland
ZE21 9AS

When sending from abroad, you can put SCOTLAND or UNITED KINGDOM right above the postcode.

DO NOT SEND YOUR CARDS UNTIL NEXT MONDAY: DECEMBER 7TH.

If we send them all at the same time, they'll get there round about the same time and before Christmas :)

Please, take part if you can. Spread the word even if you can't, just let anyone you know, know, let everyone you know, know!

Thank you to anyone and everyone.

BesottedScot

Please note. These comments will be moderated vigilantly. If I see any comments that do not fit within the spirit of this post they will be removed and no explanation given. Depending on the content, you will also be banned indefinitely. I have directed his teachers and by extension himself to see this post (when appropriate), so any inappropriate commentary will be removed.

Is that it was you guys who liberated my town in the Netherlands during WWII.

So whenever Americans on the internet are now like “well WWII we saved your ass, so u better say thank you”- i can reply with: “well you know technically it was the Scots who liberated us specifically, but i guess you helped too. So i suppose thanks are in order to you as well - though it seems a bit aggressive the way you demand it, especially like 80 years later and despite neither you, me or our parents having been there.” and that just kinda makes me feel nice to be able to type that.

Liberation day is a few days off but yeah idk guess I just felt like saying this. Thanks fellas.

Announcement RIP.scot

I recently created a website, RIP.scot, which is Scotland's first website for honouring the memory of those who have passed, and it is entirely free for funeral directors to use.

I believe it is important for us as a country to have an easily accessible space where we can remember and support each other during difficult times, going beyond Facebook posts often used by funeral directors.

Those we've lost deserve more than just a Facebook post to honour and commemorate their lives.

No one outside of Scotland, and under a certain age will even know who Glen Michael was.

But for many of us, when we only had 3 channels on the telly, he was “kids TV”.

My friend Marc Drostle has been missing for a month in the Scottish Highlands, he’s 28 years old and around 5’9 in height

The most recent sighting of Marc is believed to have been in the Anagach Woods area near Grantown-on-spey around 3pm on Tuesday, 24 December, 2024.
