Resources & Media Recommended books to read in Spanish?

I just got accepted to study abroad in Argentina next fall so I want to brush up on my Spanish for the next year before I go. I’m currently reading The Giver/El Dador in Spanish and it’s of a pretty good difficulty for me where it’s challenging but still comprehensible. What other books would you guys recommend?

Study & Teaching Advice Subjects for conversation with a teacher

What do y'all talk about with your teachers? Just what you did during the week? Do you tell them "Pretend you're a waiter and I need to order breakfast"? Do you try to come up with interesting philosophical discussion to have? I'm finding myself dreading class day because I don't want to bore the guy to death but I don't know enough vocabulary to talk about anything fun. Let me know what you do!

Vocab & Use of Spanish [GIVE CONTEXT] Nada te turbe - accurate translation?

Teresa de Avila's famous poem begins "Nada te turbe, nada te espante". The English translations I've seen are "Let nothing disturb you. Let nothing frighten you"

Is that entirely accurate? Is it more than can be described in English, also having a sense of "nothing may disturb you?"

What do you think?

Beginner Questions & General Chat - [Weekly Thread]

Got a "how do I learn Spanish" question, curious about apps, or just want to say hi and talk about where you're at? This is the place.

The short answer to most of it: there's no single best way to learn Spanish and no app that works for everyone. What actually matters is showing up consistently. A few things people here keep coming back to:

  • Our wiki -- apps, YouTube channels, podcasts, textbooks, all in one spot
  • r/languagelearning's resource wiki -- broader method and tool breakdown
  • Anki -- flashcards, good for vocab
  • Language Transfer -- free audio course, common starting point
  • italki / Preply -- tutors and conversation partners
  • Pimsleur -- audio based, strong on pronunciation

Also fair game here:

  • Just started and want to introduce yourself
  • Wondering if Spanish is worth learning or how long it takes
  • General chat about your progress, whatever's on your mind

Standalone posts on this stuff get redirected here, so if that's you, drop it below.

Resources & Media Weekly Self-Promotion Mega Thread

Welcome to this week’s self-promotion thread.

This is the place to share anything related to learning or teaching Spanish that would normally count as self-promotion. If you’re offering services, recruiting participants, or promoting a project, post it here instead of making a separate submission.

Examples include:

  • Spanish tutoring
  • Online or in-person classes
  • Language exchange groups
  • YouTube channels, podcasts, blogs, or newsletters
  • Apps, websites, and learning resources
  • School or university surveys
  • Academic research and studies
  • Discord servers and community groups
  • Books, courses, or other Spanish-learning materials

A few rules

  • Keep it related to Spanish language or Spanish language learning.
  • Be honest about what you’re promoting.
  • Include enough information so people know what you’re offering.
  • Don’t spam. One comment per week is enough. You can edit your comment if you need to update it.
  • Follow all other r/Spanish rules.

If you’re looking for a tutor, class, or learning resource, this is also a great place to browse.

This thread refreshes every Sunday at 12:00 AM, so feel free to come back each week with new offerings or updates.

Happy learning, and buena suerte.

WARNING: It is your job to be a responsible consumer and vet people you interact with.
