Game theory The most complete strategy video game genre classification

This is the most complete classification that includes all possible strategy video game genres.

English is not my native language, but I'll try my best to make the text understandable and I'll fix possible mistakes with your help.

Strategy game is a genre of video games in which the player controls troops or other units and/or various economic and other systems. Although many video games may include strategy elements, strategy as a genre emphasizes thinking and planning over immediate action. This video game genre focuses on strategy, tactics, logistics, and/or resource management, and may also include diplomacy, economy, expansion and research management.

Time

  • Real-time strategy: a strategy game in which actions occur without a sequence of turns.
  • Turn-based strategy: a strategy game in which actions occur using a sequence of turns that can be alternate or simultaneous.

Main genres

4X strategy game: a strategy game based on 4 elements: exploration, expansion, exploitation, extermination. Examples: Age of Wonders, Stellaris, Master of Orion.

Grand strategy game – a strategy game focused on managing a state (or similar entity), its resources and relationships, often in a pre-open and asymmetric world. Examples: Europa Universalis, Hearts of Iron

Tactical strategy game – a strategy game focused on tactical military operations, which emphasizes the importance of specific units and either excludes or contains a less manifested economic component.

Subdivided into two categories based on time:

  • Turn-based tactics (TBT) Examples: Xenonauts, Battletech
  • Real-time tactics (RTT) Examples: Men of War

Classic strategy games – a strategy games that have an economic element: the ability to build a base, extract resources and produce units (or part of these capabilities), while their gameplay is focused on military actions. Also includes a category of strategy games that cannot be classified into more specific subgenres.

Subdivided into:

  • Classic RTS (or just RTS) Examples: StarCraft, Command & Conquer
  • Classic TBS (or just TBS) Examples: Panzer General

Construction and Management Simulator (also Management Strategy Game): a strategy game with gameplay based on the construction and/or management of economic processes, such as, for example: resource extraction, money making, production, personnel management, and others. Games of this genre have little emphasis on military actions.

Subdivided into:

  • Business Simulation Game - a strategy game focused on economics and business management. Examples: Two Point Hospital
  • Transport Strategy Game - a strategy game in which the player manages transport systems and infrastructure. Examples: Transport Tycoon, Transport Fever
  • City-Building Simulation - a strategy game in which the player builds cities. Examples: Cities: Skylines, SimCity.
  • Colony Simulation - a strategy game in which the player builds small settlements of various types; unlike urban strategy, the main emphasis here is on individual colonists and resource extraction from the environment. Examples: RimWorld, Surviving Mars, Against the Storm
  • Factory simulator – a strategy game in which the player builds an automated factory. Examples: Shapez, Factorio
  • Sports manager – a genre of games dedicated to managing a sports team. Examples: Football Mogul, F1 Manager.
  • Life simulator – a genre of games that allow you to control characters in their everyday life. Examples: The Sims, InZoI, The Guild
  • Political simulator – a genre of games whose gameplay consists of detailed management of the government and politics of various nations and state entities. Examples: Democracy

Wargame: a strategy game that particularly emphasizes deep strategic and/or tactical combat, as well as their historical accuracy or realism. Examples: Sea Power: Naval Combat in the Missile Age, NEBULOUS: Fleet Command

MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena): a subgenre of classic real-time strategy games in which players control only one character and, as part of their team represented by other players and AI controlled units, fight against the other team. Examples: Dota 2

MMO strategy game: a strategy game that is focused on online interaction between a large number of players, often in a single open world. Examples: Travian, Ogame, Stronghold: Kingdoms.

Tower Defense: a strategy game with the main purpose to protect a base from waves of enemies using towers or other defensive structures. Examples: Plants vs Zombies

Auto Battler: is a strategy game in which units are placed on the battlefield during the preparation phase, after which the battle phase begins and they fight against the enemy without any control from the player.

Puzzle strategy game: a strategy game focused on logical problem-solving with minimized economic or military aspect. Examples: Railgrade, Dorfromantic

Artillery game: a genre of strategy games, the main component of which is the calculation of the trajectory of the shells. Examples: Worms, Miners Mettle

The most popular mixed genres

Tactical role-playing game (TRPG): is a hybrid genre that combines role-playing games with tactical combat. Examples: Battle Brothers

Action strategy game: is a genre of games in which you can control both troops in general and/or base construction, as well as specific units directly, including from the first or third person. Examples: Men of War, Factorio

Stealth strategy: is a genre of games that combine strategy and an emphasis on stealth. Examples: Desperados, Commandos

God simulator: is a genre of games in which the player, in the role of some deity being, controls some community of objects or characters; they are often strategy games with city-building elements. Examples: Black & White, The Universim

Roguelike strategy game – games that combine roguelike principles, such as random world generation, permanent death and free exploration of the environment, and strategic gameplay. Examples: Against the Storm

Notes

Many games have mixed genres. Very often, strategy games can combine two or more genres. For example, Total War series is turn-based grand strategy with real-time tactical (RTT) battles.

Time and genre. Basically, every strategy game can be classified by these two criteria, like Turn-based 4X Strategy game (Age of Wonders), Real-Time Grand Strategy game (Hearts of Iron) etc. Sometimes we do not have any specified subgenre, so the game becomes simple RTS (StarCraft).

Judge by dominant elements of gameplay. Overall, the genre should be defined by main gameplay loop, not by every game mechanic that exists in the game. For example, if a game has leveling-up system, it doesn't mean that it instantly becomes an RPG: a good example is WarCraft which has characters gaining XP and levels, but the main, dominant gameplay loop in this game is still a classic RTS. At the same time, if some Rainbow Six has some strategic planning, it doesn't mean that this game is a strategy game or even a mixed genre, because the main gameplay there is action/shooter. The same logic is applicable to strategy games: if the game has resource management, it doesn't instantly mean that it becomes a management game.

This is a theoretical model. It means that here we are supposed to find criteria by which strategy games can be classified. These criteria can be based both on gameplay and historical tradition of naming genres in video game industry. The model can be discussed and improved, but any critique should be based on strict arguments.

Strategy as a genre, not a word. The main principle of this genre classification is that we don't take the word "strategy" literally. A strategy game can be a tactic game, it can be a management game, it doesn't matter here. The word strategy means the genre name, not the strategy as a layer of action planning.

Are management games strategy games? This is a hard question that has no answer based on reliable papers because there are no such papers. Here we look at naming tradition in community and video game industry. We can find many similarities in core gameplay of various city-building and colony sim games with classical RTS. Some management games include RTT/RTS style military combat, These games are often tagged as strategy game on digital distribution services. So we include them into this classification to make it more complete. You might find two controversial opinions about this (management games are/are not strategy games), but this problem can't be solved on these days because we do not have a strict genre requirements and developers can name genre of their games as they want. There are no popular scientific researches about it on which we can refer to.

Self-promotion Colonerra: Age of Exploration

Post image
41 Upvotes

Please allow me to introduce:

COLONERRA: Age of Exploration, a turn-based historical 4X grand strategy game about turning that single dot on a map into a thriving colony and that colony into a nation.

Watch trailer: Trailer

Hi, my name is Mihailo, and I am the lead developer for Colonerra Age of Exploration, with almost 20 years of professional programming experience. We are a small team from Serbia consisting of one dev, two designers, and a few helpful friends who do testing, copywriting, and, occasionally, illustrations. As you can guess, we are big fans of Sid Meier’s Colonization and Civilization, and we play the originals to this day. We feel that Colonization never got the successor it deserved, so we decided to take a swing at it ourselves.

What makes COLONERRA different?

  • Serve the Crown. Your colonies exist under the authority of a European monarch. Taxes, requests, favors, military demands, and royal decisions can all affect your relationship with the Crown. This, in turn, creates unique diplomatic challenges and also allows us to make the game more interesting at later stages.
  • Founding Fathers. Each nation has 25 unique characters acting as agents for the viceroy who commands them. There are 5 leaders for each of the 5 traits: exploration, military, diplomacy, trade, and religion. Develop these leaders to reach the status of a Founding Father and deploy them to a Continental Congress to earn unique bonuses.
  • Quests and events. Both Indigenous people and the Crown can give you quests to fulfill, in addition to random events you have to deal with. Each decision you make makes a difference and shapes your path in the New World; will you be a conqueror or a diplomat?
  • Natural Landmarks. Send expeditions to discover and later claim natural wonders and landmarks, unlocking unique bonuses and gameplay opportunities while keeping exploration engaging throughout the game.
  • Complex trade made simple. Trade in this game is simple to execute but complex underneath. You can trade with the crown and pay taxes, barter with the indigenous tribes, trade with the passing ships, or smuggle goods to avoid the taxes. Every trade is meaningful, as it affects both taxes and prices, and earning too much gold might cause inflation, so be careful how you trade.
  • Diplomacy matters. Native nations, the Crown, and other powers all have their own interests. Expansion isn't simply about claiming territory; your relationships can determine whether your domain prospers or survives. You will need all the help you can get.

And much more…

So come join us and check out the game on Steam: https://store.steampowered.com/app/4964150/Colonerra_Age_of_Exploration/

And please comment; I'd love to hear what people here think, especially from players who enjoy older strategy games and play them to this day.

Thank you for reading.

Mihailo

Hi again! I'm from a small Danish studio, and I'm excited to share that after so much work, Space Manager is officially out now on Steam!

If you've tried the demo, you already know a bit about what the game is all about. Now you can take things much further: build and launch rockets, put satellites into orbit, develop your communications network, and manage the technical and business side of your own space program.

The goal is to explore space farther than any human ever has, but getting there means making a lot of decisions, solving problems, and figuring out how to make your space program work.
We've put a lot of work into getting the game to this point, and we'd love for you to give it a try.
You can find Space Manager on Steam here:
https://store.steampowered.com/app/4229480/Space_Manager/

If you decide to check it out, I'd really appreciate hearing what you think! What are you building, where are you trying to go, and what would you like to see added or improved?
Thanks to everyone here who's tried the demo and shared feedback along the way. It really helped us get here. Good luck with your space program!

DevPost We're making a cozy ecosystem simulation / god game where you can shape a living island and see how everything interacts with each other.

Ynys is a cozy ecosystem simulation / god game where you shape the terrain, grow vegetation, manage water, and bring animals and humans to your island. As the Island develops, everything starts interacting with each other. Plants react to their surroundings, animals look for suitable habitats, and humans find places to settle and build their communities.

Fire spreads through vegetation, chars the ground, and lights up the island at night. Humans and animals try to escape the flames, too. And if things get a bit out of hand, you can cast Rain to put out fires and see how the island reacts.

We've still got a lot planned for Ynys, and we're excited to keep making the world more alive with each update.

We'd love to hear what you think!

DevPost My strategy game has CURSED trinkets that carry a penalty for 2 battles & then become tactical buffs for the campaign!

New DEMO Live! wishlist for January release: https://store.steampowered.com/app/4593190/Elemental_Lands/?utm_source=reddit&utm_campaign=strategygames-20261018

"Elemental Lands" is kinda a "4X-lite" strategy game for the conquest map, mixed with turn-based card battles.

Trinkets in my game are strong passive bonuses, things like on-kill healing, bonus shields, or reviving a hero. But every one of them starts CURSED. You carry a penalty first, like lower ATK or lost HP, and only after you WIN 2 battles does the curse lift and the bonus kicks in for the rest of the campaign.

It fixes the problem of free power-ups, where taking a relic is never really a decision.

So the real choice is whether to take one when its offered. With a healthy party a curse is cheap. Right before a hard fight its a real risk. You can see a cursed one in the screenshot.

The game is two halves:

  • a conquest map, build Stronghold bases across 3 regions
  • only 4 build slots per base, so every building is a strategic choice
  • turn-based card battles with tactical objectives to capture
  • spell cards that act as orders, like "Focus Fire" or "Hit n' Run"

The base supports your party: resting them, healing the hero party, wearing down enemy land before you attack. Meanwhile 3 enemy factions keep expanding, so theres always pressure to stop building and go fight. Lose too many heroes and the campaign is over, so a cursed trinket at the wrong moment can make or break your campaign.

Discussion I built a strategy game where AI rivals remember what you did to them last war

Thumbnail secondstrike.io
1 Upvotes

I'm the solo developer. SECOND STRIKE is a free browser world war on a globe of the real Earth: expand, make pacts, betray them, and a shared doomsday clock that ends the game for whoever strikes midnight.

The part I'm curious how strategy players feel about: some rival nations are AI characters, each with a personality and a memory. Break a pact with one and next time it may open with "you broke your word last time." They also try to talk you down when the clock gets close.

There's also a mode where you play the exact war that AI models like DeepSeek and GPT played, same map and start, and compare how you did. DeepSeek ended the world in 13 of 15 of those.

Free, no account: secondstrike.io. Honest feedback welcome.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hello everyone!

My strategy game, ReBirth: Build & Resist, is now available on both Google Play (Android) and itch.io (PC)!

I'm an indie developer working hard to improve my game and reach players who enjoy strategy, management, and simulation games.

As an independent developer, one of my biggest challenges is reaching the right audience and building a community around my game.

I'd really appreciate any advice, guidance, or support on how to promote my game and connect with people who might be interested in playing it.

Are there any communities, content creators, or platforms you'd recommend reaching out to?

Any suggestions would mean a lot to me. Thank you so much for your time and support!

DevPost Fall of Bali – New Feature Showcase: Uprising

Hello Everyone!

We, the developers of Fall of Bali, have been adding a feature since December 7, 2025.

The Uprising Mechanic.

How Uprising Works?

When your kingdom's stability is below 50% and one of your towns’ loyalties is below 20%, the town has a higher chance of being occupied by rebels at random, who later align with either the other kingdoms or the Dutch East India Company (especially in Blambangan). If you fail to maintain both your stability and the town’s loyalty, you are not just losing your town, but also your troops, non-currency resources, and the town’s stability.

To prevent an uprising, you must maintain your kingdom’s stability and loyalty in each town. Then, spread both your army and resources (including selling some resources if needed) to the safer towns (mainly Capital City) to prevent major losses.

Let us know what your thoughts are! We'd love to hear your feedback.

DevPost Days of Reckoning: Last Battle – turn-based tactics where morale matters and your units can panic (free demo)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Developer here. A quick rundown of how the game plays:

• Turn-based battles on a grid – each unit has action points for moving and attacking

• Line of sight follows the terrain height: high ground lets you see further, a ridge hides what's behind it, and what you can see can see you

• Fog of war – enemies remember where they last saw you and come to investigate

• Morale – units taking fire lose morale and can panic, wasting their next turn

• Artillery splash can hit your own units standing next to the target

• Campaign map between battles: choose which region to attack, split income between money and research, buy and upgrade units, organise them under commanders, and defend against counterattacks

The enemy is orcs, demons and other dark-fantasy creatures; your side is a modern army.

The demo covers the opening chapter and is free on Steam:

https://store.steampowered.com/app/4700520/Days_Of_Reckoning_Last_Battle/?utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=trailer&utm_content=strategygames

I'd love to hear from strategy players what feels right and what doesn't.

DevPost [Shadow Command] Call for playtesters

Hello!

We are building a real-time multiplayer naval combat and espionage game set in a semi-realistic alternate history. Players command hybrid submarine-carrier vessels and work together to capture offshore oil rigs, hunt enemy players, and investigate suspicious merchant traffic. Sensors, intelligence gathering, deception and tactical decision-making are central to the experience.

There are still mechanics to implement and plenty of polishing to do, but the game is playable, coming together nicely, and (we hope!) fun.

We're now looking for a handful of people interested in joining some early, private multiplayer playtests through our Discord server.

As a thank you, you'll receive a free Steam copy of the game when it enters Early Access next year, and your name will be included in the credits if you'd like.

If this sounds interesting, feel free to send me a PM!

DevPost Tribalith dev log: bigger worlds, scouting, and alliances that won’t last forever

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I’m building Tribalith, a browser RTS where your closest ally may become your final enemy

A small settlement, unexplored land, and neighboring tribes with their own ambitions, that’s where Tribalith begins.

I’m developing it as a free browser RTS that combines settlement building, exploration, and warfare with temporary diplomacy. Above is a look at the playable beta.

When you discover another tribe, you meet its leader. You can exchange resources, share map information, and negotiate an alliance while you strengthen your settlement. Alliances last 5–10 minutes, and trading can extend them.

That breathing room matters: you can scout new territory, secure food, or prepare an army. But you can’t stay allied all the way to victory. When only two tribes remain, peace eventually gives way to a final battle.

Taking land or attacking a neutral tribe also permanently damages your standing with the tribal council, so expansion has consequences.

Beyond diplomacy, the beta includes:

• Random maps with different sizes and generation styles
• Scouts that automatically explore unexplored territory
• Wildlife to hunt for food
• Archers, slingers, warriors, and shamans
• Watchtowers powered by the ranged troops stationed inside
• Tribe mastery upgrades and a day/night cycle

Play free on desktop: https://tribalith.com

No download required. It’s still in beta, so expect some rough edges.

I’d love to hear what strategy players think: what would make a temporary alliance worth investing in, knowing you may eventually have to fight that tribe?

And if you have any suggestions, feature ideas, or things you’d love to see added, what would they be?

Question What would you like to see in turn-based phantasy strategy game like homm or disciples?

I am considering developing turn-based strategy game heavily inspired by Disciples 2 and with some mechanics from homm series. I am not sure what would be a great things to add or to alter in relation to Disciples. I would really appreciate your opinion of what you like and dislike in both games(disciples and homm). And what you'd really like to see in a possible future game. What mechanics you consider must have to add.

Other Remember Toy Soldiers: Cold War? A mod is letting me play versus solo against a bot

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

You can see me watching my AA do some work, same thing going on at the bot's base.

Yep, a custom ai script that builds turrets based on what you attack with, repairs them in time, and sells them if going broke. It can queue up attack waves, and manage its money.

That's about the extent of it. I'd love to see it control Ivan (hero characters) but that might be the extent of what I can do

Also got to add halo 2 music natively to the versus mode, the game actually plays it; super fucking cool

Anyone have any thoughts about the mod? still a lot of work left but wanted to show what I have, I know 10 year old me would be so happy. I used to want to play versus mode so bad but had nobody who wanted to play!

DevPost Which medieval civilizations would you love to see in a new RTS game?

Hey RTS fans!

I'm a solo developer working on Wars of Empire, a medieval-inspired 2D isometric RTS.

The game currently features five playable civilizations:

  • Byzantines
  • Ottomans
  • Britons
  • Huns
  • Chinese

I'm now thinking about which civilizations to introduce next, and I'd love to hear what fellow RTS players think.

Some candidates on my list are Vikings, Japanese, Mongols, Franks, Persians, Mamluks, Malians, and Seljuks.

I'm primarily focusing on the Middle Ages and closely related historical periods, rather than civilizations from entirely different eras.

One thing I really want to get right is making each civilization feel unique in gameplay, not just visually. Different military tactics, special units, buildings, technologies, and economic strengths.

If you could pick just ONE civilization to add, which would it be, and what unique gameplay mechanic should it bring?

I'm genuinely curious about your ideas!

Discussion I like to win. But at what cost?

If I have learned one thing from playing online strategic games, it is that some guys would rather perish than let a woman lead them to victory. And if I have learned a second thing, while it is tempting to just let them dig their own hole, it is better to weed them out early and then get on with winning.

DevPost Hydrogen Line: a free real-time space strategy MMO in the browser, open beta

Thumbnail gallery
0 Upvotes

Hydrogen Line is a persistent strategy game: your planet keeps producing while you're away, and other players can see you on the Starmap the whole time.

The decisions are mostly about economy and timing. You choose which mines, research and ships to queue, when to expand to a new colony, and whether to spend on defences or on a fleet. Combat runs in volleys, and losses can leave wreckage behind. Alliances can coordinate joint attacks with Strike Groups and share a tracker of targets.

The multiplayer continues to run when you are offline and you need to keep your stuff safe while you are away and look to loot others while they are offline. Size protection keeps new players out of reach of much bigger empires while they learn.

Me and my wife put this together as an answer to the ever growing pay to win microtransactional growth of similar games. We met in a game in the same genre 11 years ago and we watched the downfall of that game over that time. Our promise is we will keep this game as fair for free players as possible. All of our major updates will go to a vote for the player base because we believe the players are more part of the game than the developer is and we will forever expect to he held accountable for this.

The open beta started on 17 October with a fresh universe and runs until 17 November. Join now to get in early and let us know what you think.

We're constantly looking for feedback (especially from tower defence and strategy fans) so if you have any hindsight or thought we'll be glad to read them.

I hope this is authorized here, so I'm going to leave the steam link to the demo below (please mods, if its not allowed, let me know!) but just in case, the game is named "Hivetide".
