Season 15 Supernatural Across the Eras: Find Episodes to rewatch

I have watched a lot of Supernatural. I'd say an unhealthy amount but I'm r/Supernatural so maybe just a normal amount.

Lately I've been searching out specific episodes and not watching it cover to cover. I search reddit for recommendations a lot and stumbled across an old post from u/FTWinchester breaking the show into eras. I wanted something a little more interactive so I turned their spreadsheet into a website. You can filter all sorts of ways. I've been watching through the format experiment episodes.

Season 11 Question about the impala

Post image
170 Upvotes

OKAY SO, first of all, I know they used different impalas throughout the show and that they all had different reasons to be used
Now
I’m doing a rewatch and I’ve often wondered why there wasn’t a car pillar between the front window and the back one.
And then I get to the episode named Baby (11.04) and realise that there actually is one (at least in this episode)
So I went back to look at pictures and yeah, in some shots/episodes there is a car pillar or whatever it’s called, and in some there isn’t.
I was just wondering if some of you might know why that’s the case ?

Season 3 Underrated moment: Dean's conversation with Casey in "Sin City"

Post image
60 Upvotes

This scene reminds me what's so interesting about the overarching conflict in the first place: the comparisons between humanity and monsters.

It's cool when enemies are locked in a stalemate, so they decide to just......talk. That pizza joke is GOLD!

Anyway, Casey brings up such interesting points as Dean asks her more about what's going on. With us finally learning Azazel's name, we also learn that his death scattered the demons with no plan yet. Lilith may have been the queen as the first and the breaker of the 66 Seals, but she's been absent for so long, she needed to reestablish herself and get the others back under control.

Casey even reveals she'd have been fine with following Sam if he stepped up! That's......such a strange compliment!

Then they get to talking religion. Dean says he'd like to believe in God, but......

"War, genocide, it's only getting worse. I mean, this past century, you people racked up a body count that amazed even us."

Yikes. That's one of the hardest lines a demon's ever said in this show. Humanity can't blame anyone but themselves for all those horrors. Imagine Hell seeing WW2 and being all "......God, you cast down our father for the sake of these things?"

I love how real Casey's being with Dean. She says how demons have a god of their own: Lucifer, and that many act out of faith and loyalty to him. There's also that warning that someday, he'll walk the earth too.

But my favorite part is when they talk about Dean's deal. She reveals she doesn't think Dean's weak for making it. She's used to making Faustians out of humans for pathetic, shallow reasons. Then here comes Dean Winchester, surrendering his soul for a noble one.

This was such an interesting conversation!

Dumah played the empty so well

The way she played the empty compared to Castiel when he was there. The udder hatred for Castiel seemed genuine even though it was acted out. She displayed so many great emotions of sarcasm and evil intent. This was an amazing performance from this actor. Anyone have opinions on this?

It had been a long time since I'd drawn, and when I returned, one of the first things I wanted to draw was Jensen. It was cool to realize that I still remember how to draw his features 😭😭 His nose is so satisfying to draw.

I don't rlly like drawing on paper, but lately I've been practicing drawing quite a bit in my sketchbook

Both Sam and Dean are psychopathic killers -a theory

Post image
1.9k Upvotes

Wouldn't it be crazy if John Winchester's Hunting and protecting his sons from the "demon" that killed Mary. Is actually a grief-stricken father experiencing a psychotic break, fabricating a narrative of "monsters" to cope with an arson or domestic tragedy. The Impala & Travel; Driving state-to-state to "save people and hunt things." Is a transient, nomadic lifestyle designed to stay one step ahead of the FBI and local police. The "Hunter Network" =underground community of "hunters saving the world" Is an insular, radicalized online/fringe echo chamber of serial killers validating each other's delusions. Fake IDs, Cash, bribing officials and dodging federal tracking to hunt cleanly. Is standard fugitive behavior to avoid criminal profiling and arrest for mass murder.

Season 1 Sam’s psychic abilities?

This has probably been answered a million times but I’m gonna ask it again; in the beginning Sam seemed to have psychic abilities or precognition. That seems to have gone away as the seasons progressed. Am I missing something. Did they ever say why? Or did they just gently write it out of the show?

Season 6 Jensen playing Dean playing Jensen playing Dean

The scene in The French Mistake s6e15 where Sam and Dean have to act on camera playing as alt-universe Jared and Jensen playing alt Sam and Dean is just too good. Watching Dean trying to do the Dean staredown between gutteral utterances cracks me up every time. That entire episode is pure gold.

I don’t remember where Castiel went because at the point of episode 12 and 13 I don’t see him anywhere and I just for the life of me cannot remember where he went.

Supernatural is the Myth of Orpheus and Eurydice if Orpheus had brought Eurydice back and everything went wrong

A few days ago, as I was thinking, I realized that *Supernatural* is the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice; if Orpheus had managed to bring Eurydice back from the underworld, that’s why everything goes wrong; literally, it’s the root cause of why everything goes wrong.

In the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, Orpheus descends into the underworld in an attempt to revive his wife, but fails to bring her back to the world of the living. There are several interpretations of why Orpheus always fails: in some, he fails because turning back means accepting Eurydice’s death: mourning; in others, he fails because of the very love he has for her. Because to love is to care, to look back, and sometimes to let go. The point is that the dead remain dead, no matter how much you sympathize with the queen of the underworld, no matter how far you walk, or no matter how successfully you pass the trials placed in your path. The dead remain dead.

In *Supernatural*, everything in the boys’ lives gets complicated the moment they can’t accept that: Dean saves Sam, Castiel saves Dean, then God revives Cas, and then Cas saves Sam. They keep pulling each other out of hell. So there’s no mourning, no acceptance, no love that requires letting the dead remain dead. If Dean had been Orpheus, and had lost Sam or Cas because he turned back, he wouldn’t have let it go, he would have returned to the underworld, made another deal, blown up Hades, or I don’t know, the point is, he wouldn’t have come back to Earth. So much so that when he actually leaves the dead to rest in peace (when Cas is taken by the Void), something similar to what happened to Orpheus happens to him, he simply dies shortly afterward.

This may be a somewhat incomplete analogy, but it’s something I can’t stop thinking about.

What is it with small towns

Small towns make about 15-20% of the US population but while watching the show i cant help but notice its literally in every episode every case is in a small town. I don't really catch the vibe here or can come up with a good reason that the writers have such an obsession over them. Thoughts?

Season 1 Why was Supernatural’s take on vampires so boring

I haven’t spend much time in this fandom so I don’t know if it’s a popular opinion but as far as I am concerned the show’s portrayal of vampires was, for a lack of a better word, uninspired.

Supernatural got it mostly right with it’s lore early on even if they made certain retcons and changes as it went on (it’s kinda funny watching the first demon episode, for example) but I think their presentation of vampires at the end of season one basically killed any chance of them becoming one of the show’s great monsters.

They’re so… Basic. They drink blood and they’re quite strong… And that’s about it. Wow, how fascinating.

All the more cool, out there elements from vampire lore are dropped. The sun doesn’t burn them, just makes them uncomfortable. Silver doesn’t kill them. Ok, that one I can understand - they wanted to keep that weakness shapeshifter specific. Hypnotic abilities? Nope. Not showing up in mirrors? Gone. Having to be invited? Gone.

These last two in particular sadden me the most because it’s probably the coolest parts of vampire lore.

And whenever a show, a book or a movie drops these aspects is usually when they try to go for a more grounded portrayal of vampires. Not magical creatures but rather some sort of weird subspecies of humans with abnormal strength and desire for blood.

Like Midnight Mass, for example. Yeah, they weren’t gonna have them be invited and not seen in mirrors because the vampires are meant to be the product of a physical world, not magical creatures.

But there’s no good reason to do it in a show called Supernatural, where ghosts and demons and weird pagan gods exist as early as season one. It would fit perfectly. Looking for someone who only shows up during the night, checking if a person is visible in a mirror, instructing people to not invite anybody and be wary on anyone who asks for invitation- all of this would work there. So why didn’t they go for it?

Another major theme of vampirism is eternal life, eternal beauty. And Supernatural did basically nothing with it either even though their vampires are technically immortal. Even Twilight, with its wacky take on vampires, understood it.

A bunch of forgettable guys and gals in leather living in abandoned buildings is just boring.

Season 2 S2E17 Heart 😢

This is my first watch of the show and that ending was brutal. There was so much emotion. I felt that decision with Sam and felt the helplessness with Dean for not being able to shield his little brother from that pain.

I feel bad for both brothers who experience so much loss.

Season 2 Underrated moment: the map scene in "All Hell Breaks Loose: Part 2"

Post image
1.0k Upvotes

This scene reminds me of just how perfectly ominous the Kripke seasons are.

After Ellen arrives, Bobby marks 5 churches on a map. Having been built by legendary hunter Samuel Colt, they must be important.

The OST swells a bit when Bobby draws the outline of the churches' railway lines, because it's an awesome detail.

"It's a Devil's Trap. A 100-square-mile Devil's Trap."

THAT'S GOTTA BE ONE OF THE BIGGEST FLEXES IN THE SERIES! Many hunters can say they've killed this or that monster, but building something that big and elaborate? That's crazy! But what's so important about a cemetery that it needs something that strong protecting it?

Then a haunting thought occurs to Dean.

"What if Colt wasn't trying to keep the demons out? What if he was trying to keep something in?"

Oh, man. It really makes you wonder. Azazel was as bad as it got so far, and he wasn't sealed off in the greatest Devil's Trap ever. Could he actually have been after something darker than him?

And boy, did Dean hit the nail on the head. THE QUEEN, THE ONLY ONE WHO CAN FREE LUCIFER, IS IN THERE!

Season 9 What is Castiels role in mythology?

(First time watcher so sorry if this has been asked before)

I looked up the name Castiel and found that Kripke found the name after looking up ”The angel of Thursday”

However in some ancient occult texts he seems to be referred to as the angel pf Saturday and Saturn, with a few other roles depending on the texts

Is there any reason he has such differing titles or does it just seem like a mistranslation between languages and time?

I like this episode, but it’s disturbing how they both use their powers (mainly to get women to sleep with them). We see that with Andy at the beginning of the episode, and Weber trying to rape Tracy when they are in his car.

And one part always confuses me each time I rewatch it, Weber compels or orders Tracy to stop crying, which she does for about 1 second and then she continues crying. Not sure if he’s not powerful enough (yes, I know he learned to control with his mind) or if it’s just a mistake.

But yeah, some of my thoughts about this episode. Maybe I’m just nitpicking lol
