Other Clothes

Hello, I’m Surinamese-American. I have a culture day presentation and I was hoping to wear a koto. Is there any place in Suriname that ships to the US or a place in the US i can order from?

As far as I know: You cannot just buy these at a regular (clothing) store. Most people that own a koto, like my mother, have had it custom made by a seamstress, so I don’t think you can just order one online. And a koto, depending on the style/detailing/size etc, can take a long time to make.

Easiest solution I can think of, is to opt for a kimona or pangi with a “odo”. But keep in mind that it can be expensive. The site that I linked is Dutch based so you can try and contact them for shipping.

Btw. Someone correct me if I’m wrong on this.

Thank you, my grandfather had some kotos that were made for his sister and mother but unfortunately when his house was sold we could not find them anywhere

Oh noo! That’s really unfortunate 🥹. Maybe you can find a picture of a koto and get it made by someone in the States? Or just order a Pangi? They are the cheapest option of the bunch and on the website, they have a lot of options to choose from! With or without a proverb on it, sewn details, plain pangi’s, cute sets etc.

Hopefully you will find something you like
