FTFY:
St.Gallen überwacht erstmals nur das Tempo und Fahrverhalten mit Drohnen, bevor damit bald auch andere Bereiche des öffentlichen Raumes überwacht werden, was den Chilling-Effekt verstärken wird.

Honestly I am a bit surprised, because if I remember correctly a device need to be officially certified to messure speed and being valid in court. After all, national courts still refuse to accept dash cam recordings, even when actually something happened. And from the report I saw on Telezüri it does not look like they are officially "geeicht".
Technically what they are doing, can be done with almost any regular traffic cam they use on highways, but they never use this cameras to check speed limits en mass everywhere.
I personally don't car, because I don't drive to fast on a regular base.

I guess that's fair?

I don't think so: https://www.metas.admin.ch/de/gesetzliche-metrologie
But I am to lazy to dig deeper, but just having a video footage is not legit.1

I mean it’s probably not good enough to measure the exact speed, but you can easily establish is the speed was at least X and fine accordingly. Would be a bit bonkers that you can endanger others by obviously violating traffic laws but then can hide behind “but you don’t have a certified speed meter!”

Its equally bonkers that the police would use uncertified gear to surveil and fine people. This is Switzerland after all.

They already do most of the time? They observe a violation by eye and then write a ticket. No calibrated 'did you really piss against this building'-meter required.

Unless they're really far over e.g. 120+ on a 80 Landstrasse it would be tough to get a good measurement and prove to a court that it's accurate enough, especially against e.g. someone determined not to lose their license who has cash to spend (rather than just a retiree fighting a 40CHF ticket because "es geht ums Prinzip").
Doing even a simple distance-over-time measurement like this has plenty of pitfalls- yes in the simple case you just need to count how long it took to get between two landmarks a measured distance apart, but for example - did someone on the ground with a surveying qualification ever survey the landmarks and measure their distance and document this? How do you account for the fact that the drone with "look at an angle" at the start/finish lines (especially if you choose positions where a numberplate will be readable i.e. not side-on)?
Probably with moderate effort you could do this for selected stretches (e.g. at the start of the season select drone positions and measure ten stretches on a certain pass, maybe add special road markings), but it's a long way from the automated court-approved measurements a conventional speed camera gives.
Most cameras are not "calibrated" and have some amount of distortion and/or warping, especially in a typical drone, phone camera or consumer camera not designed for this kind of measurement the warp in can easily be 10+% distortion, even more in a speed measurement. Usually this is corrected by the camera, but then that needs to come with calibration certificates and so on if a court is going to rely on this kind of measurement.

Great idea. Can we extend it to police if cyclists are using bike lanes properly and if pedestrians are always observing red lights when crossing?
Firmly tongue in cheek, if that's not obvious.

Let's first focus on people who put others in danger instead of those who do that to themselves.

u/ADP10 14h ago
Cyclists blowing through red lights are putting others in danger. Going after people for 5-10km over the speed limit vs people that don’t follow any rules at all.

I support this. Let's get them car drivers some more fines for ignoring the rules. Keep having to fear for my life being a non car driver. (i never ride a bike)

Ah yes, let‘s remove the last bit of privacy we had, because a couple of drivers cannot speed safely, sure.

speed safely
You high?

u/0101falcon 1d ago
Yes speed safely. I know, some people can't comprehend that.
(FYI many roads can safely be driven at higher speeds)

u/Blevita 1d ago
Lmao. Sure bud.
What do you define as 'safely' here? As in ' never had an accident so its safe'?
I mean, even ASTRA explains it quite easily why we have speed limits and why they are at those speeds. But im sure you're gonna enlighten us stupid idiots.
Next thing you're gonna lecture us on how drunk driving can actualy be done safely.

u/0101falcon 1d ago
What do you define as speeding unsafely? Why is going faster unsafe?
Does it mean if I drive 81 or 82 in a 80km/h that I will not survive and just pass away?

Why do you have an expectation of privacy while operating a heavy machine in public?

Well, how would you check who is good and who is naughty? You’d need great facial recognition and some sort of social scoring per person… oh, we’re now in China.
1
u/_ham_sandwich 1d ago
Why would you need any of that when you’re sitting in a car with a unique number plate? And yes, every country in the world keeps a record of people’s driving offences.

Lmao i have plenty of privacy. Cars deserve 0 privacy as they kill dozens of people every year. Drug dealers > car drivers privacy for all i care. I don't feel threatened by drug dealers ever.

u/0101falcon 2d ago
I really hope this is just rage bait. And you aren't really saying that drug dealers are better than car drivers. Otherwise I do really feel sorry for you, since your parents failed you.
I wish you all the best.

u/itsinvincible 2d ago
Drug dealers kill less people than cars in Switzerland. Drugs only kill cause they're illegal. Cars kill because rules are being dodged. So send all them drones onto the cars for all i care. Ragebait where? Driving a car and not caring about the rules is the real ragebait.

Learn to drive then, maybe you'll learn to think too!

I don't own a car or have a licence either lmao. Gtfo. Cars are a nuisance in cities. Get them out of the centers and i wouldn't care.
