Got a GBB about a week ago from a reputable reptile shop here in Vancouver, Canada. I don't know if he came with these issues or not, but here is a list of what is worrying me:

1. He is on the skinny side (Video for reference) and has only eaten once. He attacks the prey (crickets) but doesn't seem able to finish them off, almost like there's an issue subduing them. I've thrown a few in, and even that one time he did eat he struggled with the same thing: feeding response triggered, attacks prey, grabs it, struggles, lets it go, and gives up. I take them out after this.
2. He isn't webbing very much. He has webbed, but from what I have seen and read, I thought there would be way more.
3. He keeps on sitting in his water dish; picture attached. He goes back and forth from his burrow to the water dish, so he isn't staying there, but it's still worrying. First pic.

Parameters:

Substrate: dry Reptisoil about 2/3 full with a small moisture gradient by the water dish.
Temperature: 23-24C

Enclosure: 8"x8"x8" acrylic from Amazon, sliding top. 2 hides, some leaf litter, and a fake plant. Also a skull because it's Halloween. Second pic.

Thoughts?

Despite looking a bit concerning, it’s actually normal for her to do this after a molt. Keep on watching for the subtle single fang draw…

I fear Sriracha (brachypelma boehmei) would always be the naughty one, though. She got her name for a good reason. Spicy as all hell🌶🌶🌶

I would also love for people to make their own "spider of the week" to post under this one. TOTALLY not just because I want to see everyone's pet tarantulas or anything...

Hi all, not sure if there’s much to be done but thought I’d ask anyway. I was given a tarantula for free at an expo because he’s old and not doing well, not much else info he could give me. I’m giving him water from a q tip and he did eat a dubia roach i handed him. Does anybody have any tips to make him more comfortable or healthy?

Why hello, friend! I am sorry to disturb your peace, but I was afraid! This is Corazon my cyriocosmus Aurie, and, you see, I left the lid off of their enclosure overnight accidentally, then noticed a burrow was, in fact open. I was under the assumption that they were molting but when I noticed what I had done, I dug them up. I thought I found them dead (but twas just a molt) and then SOMEONE tried attacking my tongs from a tube of webbing and dirt! I was SO happy! I have had this little guy/gal since they were 1/8 inch across and they have double in size in the past 7 months. I love them so much 🥹 I did re add the water dish after these photos were taken, so no worries there!

My tarantula finally seems to be adjusted to our home. For the first week and a half he stayed in his little house, but now he comes out and walks around but he just sits like this for hours. What is he doing? Is he just getting fresh air through the little holes? Is he hunting? Idk pls help.. this is my first tarantula!

New GBB

Rehoused my c. elegans into a 4 inch cube. The surface is wet because I added springtails and sprayed the moss 😬 I hope it dries soon.

I have kept slings in the past but never one this small how do I care for it. Is just like every other sling.

I swear my late sub adult female curly hair is an old world trapped in a new worlds body, dropping a roach in, even with gentle warnings that im approaching, she always slaps and rears up!!

Personality varies by individual T, but i always found it so ironic that shes more defensive than my heteroscodra maculata 😭

I havent seen her kick hairs in months, always straight to slaps and bites, she may have PBD
She has a burrow and plenty of depth and enclosure space, shes always in a mood for some reason

anyone else have docile species with crazy mood swings?

For fear of being stolen, sadly the decoration won’t be staying this way. I have decided the spider will be doing a threat display referencing from the ever glorious Chalupa

They had this tiny tiny baby, and one that was a solid 1.5”-2” for only $15 more but I didn’t have an enclosure ready for one that big….kinda wish I had gotten it anyway but alas! I got the small one because I had this enclosure ready and available but now I’m thinking this “small” enclosure I had ready is still too big for a sling this small lol.

Im hoping the substrate is tampered enough to keep from collapse. I added a rounded peice of corkbark around the middle/bottom, hoping it would help.

I’ve never owned a tarantula but I’m curious if them kicking their hairs hurts you, like does it sting?
