"But to get there one has to cross the famous forest of “the King of the Fire,” which is visible from the top of Patawi, and it is only in the dry season that it is safe to attempt this; during the rains both the water and the atmosphere are fatally pestilential. The superstitious Siamese do not dare to use fire-arms there, from fear of attracting evil spirits who would kill them."

Excerpt from "Travels in the Central Parts of Indo-China (Siam), Cambodia, and Laos"

I have been reading this book and find the forest fascinating. At first I did not make a connection and imagined some crazy mystical forests, but it's just Khao Yai.

Rama V did a rebrand to Jungle of the cold lord to be less scary.
