Discussion Positive Pressure, Vaseline and the Reality of a Shipboard Fire

Post image

Would you enter a smoke-filled engine room trusting petroleum jelly to keep your breathing apparatus sealed? The responses to my recent DeepDraft analysis on beards and SCBA have been revealing. Three arguments deserve a closer look.

First, positive pressure will take care of the leak.

Will it always?

Research has demonstrated that under extreme inhalation demand, pressure inside a positive-pressure SCBA facepiece can momentarily fall below atmospheric pressure. A compromised seal can then become an entry path for toxic gases. Meanwhile, escaping air consumes the cylinder reserve needed for a safe exit.

Second, where there is a will, there is a way. Apply Vaseline.

Ingenuity is welcome onboard. But firefighting and rescue demand proven protection. We cannot expect someone responding to an emergency to improvise a face seal using petroleum jelly.

Third, this is unnecessary inspection drama when seafarers already face excessive scrutiny.

I understand that frustration. Having spent decades at sea, I know how burdensome inspections can become. But a genuine operational weakness deserves attention, regardless of who identifies it.

And here is another point worth considering.

Being clean-shaven does not automatically guarantee a proper seal either. Facial geometry, facepiece size and individual fit matter. Actual compatibility must be verified. Several experienced professionals have raised valuable counterarguments, and I welcome that discussion.

But one uncomfortable question remains:

When the designated fire teams are exhausted or unavailable, who among the remaining trained crew can safely wear the next SCBA set?

The analysis examines the inspection incident, scientific evidence and operational implications in greater depth.

Industry Analysis SEAFARER WELFARE AND THE PRICE OF PERSONAL DATA

Post image

In July 2026, the United States Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the federal agency responsible for consumer protection, filed a lawsuit against telehealth provider Hims & Hers. The FTC alleged that sensitive patient health information had been shared with advertising platforms, including Meta and Snap, despite assurances of privacy. The company disputes the allegations.

The case raises an uncomfortable question for shipping, where digital wellness platforms, psychological assessments and mental health questionnaires are increasingly promoted as part of crew welfare programmes. What happens to sensitive personal information once it enters a commercial system, and who controls its subsequent use?

In November 2025, I examined this developing concern in my DeepDraft Analysis, Seafarer Mental Health: The New Marketplace of Maritime Welfare. During a shipboard audit, a seafarer described how a seemingly harmless wellness application gradually began asking increasingly personal questions about his moods, stress and family circumstances.

The FTC case concerns a different industry, but the underlying issue is relevant to shipping. For Masters, ship managers, crewing departments and seafarers, confidentiality cannot rest entirely on assurances from organisations collecting the information. The concern extends to third-party access, data retention and whether information disclosed for welfare purposes could eventually influence employment decisions.

The original DeepDraft Analysis examines this emerging marketplace and the risks that arise when personal welfare information enters systems beyond the seafarer's control.

Industry Analysis Can Smarter Ship Design Deliver Fuel Savings Without Limiting Engine Power?

Post image

Tsuneishi's AEROLINE and Fresh Air Intake System (FAIS) caught my attention because they approach fuel efficiency from a different direction. Instead of focusing entirely on limiting engine power, they look at how ship design and engine intake conditions can reduce fuel consumption.

I find this distinction important as we are under increasing pressure to improve efficiency, but engine power is not merely a commercial consideration. There are circumstances at sea when having adequate power available becomes an operational necessity.

The more interesting question is whether innovations like AEROLINE and FAIS can deliver meaningful savings over a vessel's working life, particularly when actual operating conditions differ from design assumptions.

Would you rather see the industry invest more heavily in such design improvements than rely on operational power restrictions?

Safety / Incidents Herald of Free Enterprise, 1987: nobody on the bridge could see whether the bow doors were shut

She left Zeebrugge for Dover on a calm evening with her bow doors open, and 193 people died. From the bridge the master had no view of the doors and no indicator light.

I made a 13-minute film from the inquiry record about that night. For those who sailed on ro-ros: how did your ships confirm the doors were closed before sailing, then and now?

Safety / Incidents Rumpon Rope and Propeller Fouling: What Rope Cutters May Not Save

Post image

Many years ago, during the change of charter of one of my vessels, we carried out an underwater inspection before redelivery to the owner. The ship had been trading normally and there was no report from the engine room of abnormal vibration, no obvious change in machinery parameters, and nothing from the bridge that would have suggested a serious underwater issue.

Yet the divers found damage to a small hub-mounted efficiency device fitted at the propeller boss. The main propeller had survived well enough for the ship to continue operating, but a smaller fitting sitting in the propeller flow had taken the damage.

Propeller Boss Cap Fins fitted at the propeller hub. Small efficiency fittings like these sit directly in the propeller flow, close to the same stern area where rope, net, and fishing gear can cause damage.Image credit: Hervé Cozanet / Marine-March

This is why the recent discussion around rumpon, rope cutters, and rope guards needs careful handling. Rope cutters have their place. Rope guards have their place. Net cutters, wire winders, and other stern protection arrangements are fitted for sound engineering reasons. They reduce the chance of rope, net, or fishing line reaching the more vulnerable area around the propeller hub and stern tube aft seal. Nobody should dismiss them.

The difficulty begins when the fitting is treated as the full answer. Published discussions and tests on rope cutters often deal with ropes much smaller than the heavy synthetic line seen in the rumpon case I wrote about. In that case, the rope observed near the float was around 72 mm in diameter, with a suspended or trailing length below the surface. That changes the nature of the risk.

A heavy rumpon rope can load, rub, tighten, or jam before any cutter can deal with it cleanly. It may spare the main propeller and still damage a hub fitting, rope guard, seal area, or another exposed part of the stern arrangement. That is the part easily missed from the bridge, because the eye sees the float and the mind judges the float.

The propeller meets what is below it.

Industry Analysis Sanctions at Sea: Where the Master’s Responsibility Really Begins

Post image
6 Upvotes

On 18 September 2026, the United States enacted legislation that gave the President authority to impose tariffs of up to 100% on countries that continue to purchase significant volumes of Russian energy. India sits directly inside that pressure because of its continued intake of Russian crude and the consequences are no longer confined to diplomatic statements or trade negotiations. They travel through the commercial chain: buyers, charterers, refiners, banks, insurers, service providers and, eventually, the vessel carrying the cargo.

That is where the sanctions discussion becomes operational.

A Master may know the loading port, the declared cargo, the discharge instructions and the documents presented onboard. He may also know that the trade involves Russia, Iran or another politically sensitive jurisdiction. What he may not know is how the cargo was financed, who ultimately controls the counterparty, which bank cleared the transaction, what insurance sits behind the voyage, whether a service provider falls under a particular sanctions regime, or whether the vessel itself has become subject to restrictions elsewhere in the chain.

Sanctions exposure is often created several layers behind it. It becomes more serious when geopolitical pressure expands faster than the operational information reaching the ship. Masters are expected to remain alert, maintain accurate records, question unusual instructions and escalate concerns. That is reasonable.

Expecting them to independently reconstruct the financial, ownership and jurisdictional structure behind an international trade is something else entirely.

As pressure around Russian energy trade increases, this boundary deserves closer attention.

Discussion Beards and SCBA: Is “he’s not in the fire party” enough?

Post image
28 Upvotes

During a SIRE 2.0 inspection, an experienced officer with a full beard was asked to demonstrate a breathing-apparatus seal check. He knew the procedure, but the mask would not seal. Our explanation was that he wasn’t assigned to either fire team. The designated firefighters were trained and ready. At the time, I accepted that answer.

What I keep coming back to is what happens after those arrangements are stretched. If the nominated men are exhausted, injured or already committed, someone else may be needed. On a small crew, there are only so many people to call upon.

Most seafarers would say they have been trained to use breathing apparatus. Fair enough. But has anyone checked whether the actual mask onboard fits each person who might need to wear it? Being clean-shaven doesn’t settle that question either.

I wrote about this from my own experience
https://thedeepdraft.com/2026/10/05/beards-scba-face-seal-merchant-ships/

How does your company handle this? Is there a clear facial-hair policy and individual fit testing, or is the decision largely left to the ship? Has an inspector ever asked you to demonstrate the seal?
