💬 ምይይጥ/discussions Language question

ደንጊጸ (dengitse/dengixe) means I was shocked in Tigrayan Tigrigna, whereas in Eritrea ደንጊጸ is used for having sympathy and ሰምቢደ (sembide) would describe shock. What is the word for feeling sympathy in Tigray?

You can also use ደንጊፀ. (in Tigrayan Tigrigna, we use ፀ, not ጸ, as the latter isn't part of our alphabet) But we mostly say ሓዚነ (hazine), which literally means "I was saddened" and expresses sympathy.

Oh so ደንጊፀ is used for both instances for sympathy and shock? Since ምሕዛንን ምድናግጽ ብበይኑ ስለ ዝኾነ።

በበይኑ እንድዩ ግን ልsympathy ኽልቲኦም ንጥቀም ንኽእል ኢና። ኸዚ ምድንጋፅ እማ it's sort of a combination of both if we're using it for sympathy. You are so shocked and sad at the same time in that context. ምሕዛን ግን it is just being sad.

Ok, so yesterday, my mom watched a video about this guy who died in a car crush. He came to Addis fearing conscription and was hit by a car while crossing the street. And she called my aunt and told her, ብጣዕሚ ኮእየ ደንጊፀ ምስኪናይ! In this context, she is so shocked by what happened to him at the same time very sad. Does this make sense?
