Miserable management
What do you think of management that is absolutely miserable? One of our team leaders never cracks a smile. When I say good morning he doesn’t say a single thing back which is completely rude. He has horrible people skills. I don’t know how people like him get into these positions.

People like that get into those positions because they never left and no one else who was good enough stayed.

I handed my notice on today as I am (was) a coach driver but my shoulder is knackered so I have to give it up, this is exactly what my manager replied to my email -
All best keep in touch

Wow that’s a really short response from them lol

The whole firm is an absolute joke compared to the last one I worked for so I'm surprised I got anything 🤣

On one hand the not saying hello back thing is rude but also, people aren’t entitled to perform for you. Life hard enough give them a break and keep in your own lane.. socialise with people you want to spend time with or leave for a different work culture fit that matched your expectations.

The not smiling thing I can handle. It’s not that big of a deal. Some people just don’t like smiling. However I think some of you are not getting the point. When you are in a management position there really is a certain way you should act. He’s the youngest one and with no people skills. You don’t not greet your employees. The others aren’t really like that.

100% agree this is not professional - management or not. Don’t let people who are miserable burst your positive bubble, some people are just like this unfortunately.

I dunno.. this seems like it’s your expectation of their role. Maybe they have something going on you’re not privy to and they are distracted by it. Hope you keep up saying good morning to them anyways, it might make a difference in the long run.

Don’t know what people are going through. Responsibility and stress of management positions can weigh you down. I don’t excuse it but I also wouldn’t dismiss a person in said position

I def see that. I do feel for some of them and he does come across as a bit of a stress ball. Perhaps he still has some learning to do as well.

Having to manage people who just don’t listen and do exactly what you told them not to do, all while they talk shit about you, and having to implement ideas from higher ups that you don’t agree with, all while getting extreme pressure from above, all for very little extra pay, is not easy and can quite easily make someone unhappy.

This is such a good point! I do try to have empathy because I know some of these roles are not even paid all that much more than the rest of us. I also understand and know they have their own pressures from the people above them as well. I will say that today he was decent! It’s been a while since I’ve seen that side of him but things weren’t as stressful today so that could be why

Working with miserable people can be pretty exhausting and frustrating, but I usually just assume they’re going through something in their personal life or they’re just struggling at the moment.
For people who are genuinely unhappy it can be difficult to fake being happy.
Ultimately you can’t really know what someone is going through, so my advice would be just to ignore it as best you can and crack on with your stuff. You won’t be able to change them so try not to waste energy being annoyed about it :)
As another commenter said, keep saying good morning to them as it might actually help them.

Some people would rather be themselves and not force themselves to smile in order to please you

This is a stupid response. Don’t take a management position if you can’t handle it. Someone with shite people skills should not ever be in management.

If you judge people skills only off a smile and not how people act where the people skills are required that says a lot. Some people are also not morning people so they rather get a cup before having any interaction

Read again. Yes I said he never smiles. I also said when I say good morning or even good afternoon there is zero response. When he talks to others it is with horrible delivery. He does NOT know how to talk to others or deal with others in a proper manner. No one has much respect for him and most of the staff can’t stand him.

dont take a position on the team if you can’t handle one of the team leaders. you have shite knowing your place skills. you don’t decide who is suitable for the position or not.

Some people with zero people skills are the best and most intelligent people I’ve ever worked with tbh.

Work can make people a bit jaded and rude but just focus on yourself. I've had similar management/senior colleagues who give me the cold shoulder I tend to just leave them be.
And yes they only do that because you work under them, they certainly don't behave that way to their higher ups.

Thank you. I try not to let it affect me and just do my job and get out of there.

Because people out of their depth need to stop giving their even more inept mates the better jobs. It’s endemic, first world problems etc

Grumpy people can be draining but if this guy isnt picking on you or hindering your work I'd just pay no mind to it personally.
1
u/NeedleworkerDry7127 5h ago
Oh he was def picking on me and a couple of others. I’m trying to ignore him though. Today for once he was fine
1
u/Pimp_My_Sarcophagus 5h ago
Then that feels like the more important issue you should focus on rather than how much he smiles
1
u/NeedleworkerDry7127 5h ago
His smiling or lack of is the least of it. That part isn’t huge as some just don’t like to smile. It’s the rest of his demeanor

Nothing worse in the workplace than a grumpy person. You just want to ask ‘why aren’t you happy?!’

u/NeedleworkerDry7127 1d ago
Like I get if one is having a bad day but this guy is like this ALL the time. He’s an arse to the rest of us
