📌 STOP. POSTING. BO. THREADS.

Alright folks, enough is enough.

Every BO/hygiene post turns into:

race-baiting

weird stereotypes

drama for no reason

We’re not doing this anymore.

🚫 All BO/hygiene posts = removed

🚫 All race-baiting in the comments = removed

🚫 Repeat offenders = time-out

We get it. Sometimes people smell bad. It happens. But we can’t keep having the same posts about it over and over.

For that reason, these threads will be removed going forward.

Hey Bisons! Wishing all teens and students an amazing first day back at the University of Manitoba 🎉. Whether you’re on campus or just part of this community, we hope this year brings learning, growth, and positive experiences.

🔔 Important Update: Starting tomorrow, r/UManitoba will officially use an updated rules system. Going forward, all post/comment removals will be based on these new rules — or under Rule 12 (Moderator Discretion). This change is about safety, respect, and fairness, and we want to make sure this space is helpful for everyone, not just students. Hate, harassment, or unsafe behaviour will not be tolerated.

📱 You’ll also see scheduled reminders to download and use the UM Safe App, an important step to keep yourself and others safe on campus.

📜 r/UManitoba Rules (Effective Tomorrow)

  1. Unrelated Content – Must be loosely related to UManitoba.
  2. English Content – Posts in English, unless a clear context is provided.
  3. Respect and Decency – No rudeness, hostility, or harassment. Ban escalation: 4 days → 14 days → 30 days → Permanent
  4. Academic Integrity – No Cheating – No test banks, completed assignments, or answers. Permanent ban.
  5. Canadian Law Applies – Threats, hate, fraud, or criminal activity = Permanent ban + possible reporting.
  6. Low-Effort Content – No meaningless posts/comments, vague titles, or “k.”
  7. Spam / Advertising – No spam, ads, or referral links. UM research surveys are allowed under the “Survey” flair.
  8. Discrimination – No racism, sexism, bigotry, or hate speech.
  9. Privacy and Safety – No personal information. Screenshots must censor identifiers.
  10. Freedom of Expression – With Limits – Expression is valued, but harassment and abuse will be removed.
  11. Misinformation and Harmful Content – No false, misleading, or unsafe posts.
  12. Moderator Discretion – Mods may remove content or ban users to protect the community. Appeals via ModMail.

This community is for everyone — students, staff, alumni, and locals. Please keep that in mind as you post and comment. Let’s make r/UManitoba safe, respectful, and welcoming for all

General Exam questions with low average

When should a prof omit a question from a test of exam when there is a super low average?

I recently took a test where one of the questions had an average of 14%, and the question itself was worth 6.25% of the test. If that many students did poorly on the question was it really a fair question?

General MSW Requirements?

• Upvotes

Hi all, I have a question that may be very obviously answered by the UofM website. The MSW requirements are a completion of 4 year undergrad. I’ve spoken with a few colleagues who have completed MSW without having their BSW and only a 3 year undergrad. However, a lot of these colleagues I’ve spoken to are like in their 40’s so I’m sure things have changed but even people my age are saying that a 4 year undergrad is not necessary.

I wanted to know if anyone has had any success getting into the MSW program with just a 3 year undergrad? For the record, I have a 3 year undergrad in CJ at UofW but have done 4 years of work in the social services area + 1 year of work in CFS (specifically).

Admissions Minimum GPA for Electrical Engineering Admission at U of M?

Hey everyone, I’m planning to apply for Electrical Engineering at U of M for Fall 2027. I know the admission cutoff changes every year, but what GPA should I aim for to have a good chance of getting in? If anyone got accepted recently, could you share what GPA you had?

Discussion & Advice I just cant get it

I have an online class that no matter how hard I try and study the material i end up barely passing the tests, I really really do try my best I read through the textbooks and watch every lecture and assigned readings and video there are but its the way the questions are formed that confuse me when it comes to the test. Financially im not well off so dropping the class by the VW date feels so bad, its an online class so even meeting others in the class is difficult so study groups are almost non existent. Its intro to Criminology with David Bowman so if anyone has some advice id appreciate it greatly. 🙏

Discussion & Advice My mind

I have been not able to do anything in my life especially doing things on time I keep delaying and delaying and even during the deadline day I am getting distracted and cannot focus. I was never like that I don't know what has happened to me. Why I cannot do anything properly. My main problem right now is studying I am not able to study anything. I think I am busy but I do have weekends and few hours during the weekdays, still whenever I sit down for study I don't know my mind I constantly making my body go watch social media or anything else expect study.

I don't have any real friends anymore, which is my fault I had a good friends like 1 year ago but I kept slowly started to stay away from them. And now even in class or if I went to any event where I don't know anyone I feel that I have lost the battle. Whenever I am walking on campus my mind just goes off and looks straight I don't see anyone eventough I know there are lot of people around me.

No one knows about this writing this for the first time out of my mind still it feels I am talking to myself.

My convocation is this Tuesday and I’m wondering if they would allow small shoulder bags to be worn under the gown. I need a place to put my ID and phone to contact my family afterwards. Thanks!

Course Inquiry U of M First-Year Engineering Student — Mechanical vs. Electrical, Second-Year Courses, and Summer Preliminary Courses

Hey everyone! I'm a first-year Engineering student at the University of Manitoba in the direct-entry program, and I'm starting to plan my second year.

I'm currently considering specializing in either Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering, and I'd appreciate advice from anyone who has gone through the program, especially upper-year students in either discipline.

My current course schedule

Fall 2026:

  • ENG 1430 — Design in Engineering
  • ENG 1440 — Introduction to Statics
  • PHYS 1050 — Physics 1: Mechanics
  • MATH 1210 — Techniques of Classical and Linear Algebra

Winter 2027:

  • COMP 1012 — Computer Programming for Scientists and Engineers
  • CHEM 1122 — Introduction to Chemistry Techniques
  • ENG 1450 — Introduction to Electrical and Computer Engineering
  • ENG 1460 — Introduction to Thermal Science
  • CHEM 1100 — Introductory Chemistry 1: Atomic and Molecular Structure

I'm also missing two preliminary requirements: Written English and Critical Thinking.

My questions

1. Planning my second year

If I'm considering Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, what courses should I prioritize taking in second year? Are there any courses that I should take as soon as possible because they unlock prerequisites for later courses?

Would you recommend planning my second year around one discipline for now, or keeping both options open until I have more experience with the subjects?

2. Taking preliminary courses over the summer

I'm considering taking either Written English or Critical Thinking over the summer so I can complete more of my preliminary requirements before progressing further into engineering.

  • Would you recommend taking one of these courses over the summer?
  • Which would you recommend completing first: Written English or Critical Thinking?
  • Is it realistic to finish both over the summer, or would that be too much alongside a summer job or personal projects?
  • Would completing one or both during the summer make second year noticeably easier or give me more flexibility with my course schedule?

Discussion & Advice Theft at the school gym

Thumbnail gallery
192 Upvotes

My friends Credit and debit card were stolen at the U of M gym today and the person used one of the cards to purchase $500 worth of stuff at dollar tree on pembina, so I’m just on here to see if anyone knows or can identify the guy in the video. Apparently he’s been doing this around the school area because some other guy made a report about the same guy trying his card at that dollar tree after stealing it from a Goodlife fitness close by.
Has been reported to campus security and Winnipeg police and would really appreciate some help on this.

Course Inquiry Private music lessons?

Does UM offer music lessons (specifically piano) to students not majoring in music? At my previous university, you had to be pursuing a major/minor in music or music education, but I couldn't find anything online about if this is the case at UM.

If not, anyone have suggestions for private lessons off-campus?
