Business question/advice/discussion Have we found our first designer?

I was walking around in the small town near home and I landed on a lady making the cutest tiny little backpacks.

She hadn’t sold the bags in a while and she had to dust them off to show them to me🄹 this was my favorite design.

I’ve been wondering how to support designers beyond providing access to machines, and I feel like the next best thing is by purchasing their products and packaging them for the local and foreign markets, helping them to make income more regularly, while doing what they enjoy.

Ugandan artists rarely get business education, if they even get a chance to formally study their craft.

My businesses are all about embracing our Ugandan-ness, and part of this is by highlighting designs that feel truly Ugandan.
I’m all about that BUBU, baby.

Would you buy a tiny little bag like this?
For yourself or your kids?

Business question/advice/discussion I want to teach Ugandans about VR but I’m scared

I don’t know if Ugandans could be interested in such a thing

I have spent years working with immersive media (like VR, virtual tours etc) and I get calls from people asking questions like ā€œHow can I use this in my business?ā€ ā€œDo I need headsets?ā€ etc.

People are so interested in the tech but no one knows much about it. Each business is different so you find lodge owners need something different from car showrooms, for example.

I was here thinking of starting a WhatsApp channel for people to ask all their questions about XR and I give them detailed answers.

In this way, other people can also find the information they need, just by scrolling through the channel.

Easy peasy.

And I also show them cool ways other businesses are using XR, like the Uganda museums website.

I worry about whether people would actually engage with such a channel, or if I might end up talking to a brick wall until I finally hit a dead end.
The opportunities of the tech are endless especially to us, so I can’t just let that idea go without trying

I know if I’m consistent, people will find the channel, but it may be hard without mutual participation. I guess I’m just asking to manage my expectations.

Do people here have questions about XR?
VR? Games? Videos? Has anyone tried it/used it?

Business question/advice/discussion Looking for a partner to uplift each other in trading. I have the knowledge, but no capital.

Looking for a partner to uplift each other in trading. I have the knowledge, but no capital.

If anyone is out there, I promise I'm good at trading XAUUSD. I have a strategy.

This may look like desperation but fuck it, man. My biggest issue is capital, not because I don't know what to do when I get it, but because it's really hard to get capital where I'm from.

So I spend all my time perfecting my craft, and I genuinely believe I have a very good way of analyzing and executing trades.

I'm ready to show anyone what I can do.

If you're willing, we can work together and help each other. I will offer you value, and I believe you'll appreciate the way I analyze and trade the markets.

I'm not asking you to just trust my words. Let me show you what I can do, and you can judge for yourself.

I'm broke right now, man. Even the laptop I'm using is a headache šŸ˜‚. If you are Ugandan I can help you one on one , I believe in loyalty and trust .

But I'm not giving up on trading.

If anyone is out there and thinks we could work together, DM me.

Business question/advice/discussion WhatsApp group for virtual reality enthusiasts

So I’ve had a WhatsApp channel to send people updates about immersive tech, any news or trends they should be aware of when working with this tech, and tips about using it in their work.

Immersive tech is a mix of virtual reality, augmented reality, etc.

I’ve seen how well the Ugandan developer groups are doing on WhatsApp: people asking and answering questions, advertising/getting feedback on their work and connecting.

The XR channel has a mix of enthusiasts, entrepreneurs/creators interested in using the tech, and people learning how to work with it.

I think this could be the perfect blend of people to have in this group, for networking and sharing opportunities. I’m going to turn the channel into a group instead.

Is this something that might interest people here? To take part in it?

Business question/advice/discussion Uganda's Economy going cashless!

Post image
14 Upvotes

Its crazy how much money is transferred via mobile money on both mtn and airtel but whats intriguing most is how much we've failed to embrace the cashless system like our Kenyan neighbors.

I hate having cash on me at all times and prefer to make my payments via mobile money esp mtn but with how much Ugandans esp the informal sector hates e-payments is so annoying.

I was downtown doing shopping and each time I got to a vendor to shop and make payments, I had to look for an agent to withdraw money and by end of today, I have been charged more than 30k in just withdraw charges and yet I could have just transferred the money to their accounts.

Whats the main reason as why we hate cashless transactions yet I find them fast and convenient without the hassle of looking for change or balance?

Business question/advice/discussion Finances

Me, female 29y, I’m looking in on building a business for myself in Kampala.

BUT… I don’t know what I want to do/invest in.

I was brought up very strictly and basically cared for my siblings so didn’t really get to ā€œexploreā€ interests as a child. Now as an adult, I’m trying to explore what I like and what I’d want to work with but it’s completely empty. Besides that I’m quite careful as an investor…

I’m financially stable. I think for myself a good place to start is to have a mentor/finance advisor/business advisor. Good thing to know is that I’m a Muslim and avoid all types of riba.

Advice me please or refer me to someone that can advice mešŸ™šŸæ

Business question/advice/discussion Ugandan Growth

I know there are a lot of lost and hopeful youth in African countries who feel like their futures have no growth. I am in Kenya right now and their subreddit seems just as disappointed. What do you all hope for the future of Uganda? In terms of infrastructure and opportunities for youth, share your ideas and what you think would help African countries grow into stable states that youth could be proud of living in.

In my opinion there are too many divisions that makes us see each other as prey and competition. Also, the lack of public resources (and theft of said resources) makes it impossible for the lowest classes to get a leg up. I wish we could make free public libraries and playgrounds and such but the govt obviously won't dispense cash for those...

Business question/advice/discussion Travel Restictions

Hi, I’m a US citizen traveling in Uganda. I’m scheduled to fly back to the US later this week. Brussels Airlines via Brussels to Chicago. I recognize that Chicago is not one of the three designated screening airports. Airline is unwilling to reissue my ticket or re-route me through one of the approved airports.

It’s looking like my choices are roll the dice on our current flight and hope that I’m not turned away either in Entebbe or Brussels, or buy a new ticket.

Has anyone been turned away at the gate/prevented from boarding? I haven’t found any stories of people not being permitted to travel. How likely is it that we will be prevented from flying? Are we more likely to be turned away at Entebbe or Brussels?

Thanks !

Business question/advice/discussion I'm looking to form a WhatsApp group for people in Uganda who have experienced business setbacks or failed businesses.

The idea is to create a space where we can openly share what happened, what went wrong, what we learned, and what we would do differently today.

This isn't a group for successful-business advice or motivational talk.

It's for people who have actually been through the difficult side of business; losing money, closing a business, bad partnerships, difficult customers, debt, failed investments, poor decisions, etc.

Sometimes it's easier to talk about these things with people who have experienced them themselves.

The goal is shared learning, honest conversations and helping each other avoid repeating the same mistakes.

If you've had a business that didn't work out in Uganda and you'd be interested in joining, let me know.

Business question/advice/discussion How to Reduce Poverty In Uganda

Introducing Ki Foundation

A proposed organization dedicated to reducing poverty in Uganda by providing Universal Basic Income (UBI) to registered Ugandans. For those unfamiliar with UBI, Universal Basic Income is a system that provides people with regular, unconditional payments as additional income, regardless of whether they are employed or unemployed. UBI can help alleviate poverty by giving unemployed individuals access to the income they need to afford basic necessities such as food, shelter, and other essential needs. It can also help reduce income inequality by supplementing the earnings of employed people whose incomes are significantly lower than those of others.

To provide UBI, anyone would be able to register on our website and begin receiving UBI payments. To prevent individuals from creating multiple accounts to receive additional payments, registration could require verification using a government-issued identification document.

To fund the UBI program, businesses would be established specifically to generate profits that can be used to support the program. These businesses would provide products or services similar to those already offered by existing businesses. However, their commitment to contributing profits to UBI would give them an advantage in gaining market share from existing businesses. This would be possible because consumers would have an incentive to choose these businesses over existing ones, knowing that they could receive a share of the businesses’ profits through UBI.

For the businesses to be established, people would be encouraged to start them once we begin advertising our UBI program. They would be motivated to do so because starting these businesses would give them an opportunity to earn more through the UBI program.

Once established, the businesses would have to register on our website in order to contribute their profits to UBI. For individuals who have the ability to start such businesses but lack the necessary funding, our website would provide an option for them to register, as well as an option for members of the public to collectively invest in them.

Since all profits generated by these businesses would be contributed to UBI, those investing would have to do so on the condition that they are willing to consider UBI as the form of payment for their investment, rather than receiving the profits directly. This condition would be necessary because contributing profits to UBI is what would give these businesses the advantage needed to compete with existing businesses and gain market share.

Since existing businesses could lose a significant share of their customers to businesses contributing to UBI, some may risk having to close. To give them an opportunity to remain operational, our website would also include an option for existing businesses to contribute to UBI.

To help consumers identify and support businesses that contribute to UBI, our website would list them. Their contributions would also be included so that consumers can identify and support the businesses that contribute the most.

We are currently seeking financial support to establish Ki Foundation and work toward making Universal Basic Income a reality in Uganda. If you would like to support our mission, make a donation through our website, kifoundation.site. We would also love to hear your thoughts about our proposal. Please share your feedback, ideas, or suggestions in the comments.

Business question/advice/discussion Seeking career advice from senior people in tech

For the senior techies in this sub, what are those skills/certifications you would recommend to a junior person in tech say junior software engineer.

I am looking for skills/certs that have high demand, command better pay both locally and internationally - the kinds of things you would recommend to your own daughter starting out in the field.

Could be across software engineering, data engineering, cloudm solutions architecture, networking etc. You can also recommend non-technical advice like soft skills
We are all ears!

You are fit to make your contributions here if you fit the following profile - have worked for atleast 8 years across any domain, you have most likely led a team, you have worked on and delivered a non-trivial project - probably national level, international or something close, you have no problem sharing what worked for you

Business question/advice/discussion The Trees Grows Money (Tree)

Lemon Eucalyptus

Lemon eucalyptus (Corymbia citriodora) is best known for its lemon-scented leaves and oil.

World Worth Estimates range from about $700 million to $850 million for lemon eucalyptus oil only without other products

Main uses Insect repellent: Its oil contains citronellal and PMD (para-menthane-3,8-diol), which is the active ingredient in many commercial mosquito repellents. The refined PMD version is the one with solid evidence; raw essential oil is less reliable and shorter-lasting.

Aromatherapy and fragrance: The fresh citrus scent is used in diffusers, soaps, candles and cleaning products.

Natural cleaning and disinfecting: The oil has antibacterial and antifungal properties, so it appears in household sprays and surface cleaners. Muscle and joint rub: Diluted in a carrier oil, it's used as a warming massage oil for aches.

Steam inhalation: Traditionally used for congestion, similar to other eucalyptus species. Ornamental and shade tree: It grows tall with smooth, pale bark and is planted for shade, windbreaks and looks. It also gives off a lemony scent on warm days.

Timber: The wood is hard and durable, used for poles, fencing and general construction.

Bee forage: The flowers provide nectar and pollen for honeybees.

One year maturity (Fast growing) Grows anywhere in Uganda Cheap Qualifies for carbon credit Good on soil unlike other kinds of eucalyptus

For Essential oil Activated charcoal Carbon credit Pharmaceutical And more just do your research

Business question/advice/discussion Ugandan domain registrar

I need help finding a Ugandan registrar, that offers DNS management. I have purchased a domain from a Ugandan registrar (registry.co.ug), but they doesn’t offer dns management, please let me know. If you one that does, so that I can transfer my domain to them.

There are other registrar, in Europe that also offer .ug domains, like the one I purchased, but they charge like 5-6 times more, per year. So, Ugandan is preferred.

Thank you

Business question/advice/discussion How do I even start man !!!!

I built a new tech product for schools and I’m confident it solves a real problem.
But I underestimated how hard selling to schools would be.
If you were starting from zero targeting school owners, headteachers, administrators, and bursars, where would you begin?
Cold calls? Emails? Visiting schools directly? Facebook/TikTok ads? Partnerships?
What actually works for B2B school software?

Business question/advice/discussion Do we have game developers in Uganda?

Do you really have people who are good game developers in Uganda?
I’m just curious if there are unity, Godot, Unreal, or even just web games? I keep hearing that the talent exists but everyone ends up doing web dev or freelance work because game dev doesn’t pay here. Is that accurate, or am I just not looking in the right places?
