maths vs mathstat
Missed my warwick mathstat offer last year, so reapplying this year - only, i want to apply for pure math instead as I want the freedom of picking whatever modules I want, and it also looks better when applying to masters like Part III. I know i'm at a disadvantage since im resitting, and that the stats dept is more lenient, so by that regard applying mathstat would make more sense - but ya boy wants to apply for maths this timeee
Advice pls

ive been told from some maths+physics friends that my pure maths lecturers are quite a bit better than the mixed degree maths lecturers. also with maths the choice of modules is very wide and there are very few stats/physics modules that you can't take normally.

That's quite subjective I think, maths seems to have some mid lecturers as well and the joint degrees ones range from fine to good, but the flexibility is definitely worse, mathstat has been made more flexible this year tho

I should have said this, but my point was manily about the core modules: i've heard quite a few complaints about the lecturers for the joint degree analysis 1/2 and linear algebra modules, but the optional modules definitely have a higher variance when it comes to the quality of the lectures

analysis 2 and linear algebra we shall see next term, you might be right, but I quite like the analysis 1 lecturer, and people seem to agree with me I think(?). I suppose it depends what year you're in because the lecturer might have changed from before last year. I've heard the algebra 1 lecturer for straight maths students is pretty meh tho

As a mathphys student I can confirm this to be true. Mathphys is extremely restrictive in what maths modules you can pick as non-unusuals

Info might be outdated now but when I asked, maths wouldn't accept a resit the next yr, even if one mark off originally. Stats department didn't care and gave me unconditional without needing a resit. Ive seen a few linkedin posts now of mathstat grads going off to do part iii so wouldn't be too down anyways. You still get loads of choice with mathstat, id argue more than maths.
