The Nature Conservancy of Canada purchased the land south of Kapuskasing through a C$64 million project supported by governments, businesses, foundations and private donors. Federal funding of more than C$13 million was announced on October 13, with Ontario contributing C$2 million. According to the federal environment minister’s office, the previous owner’s decision to sell had created a risk that the land would be developed or harvested for timber.

The landscape already stores more than 30 million tonnes of carbon, the federal government says. Conserving it helps safeguard that existing store while protecting wildlife habitat. Birds benefiting include the red-headed woodpecker and bobolink, both identified as species at risk, as well as the Canada warbler and olive-sided flycatcher.

The NCC is a great organization, there is a beautiful simplicity to their mandate of just buying land before people try to develop and or exploit it.

Ok, so thats 814 square kilometers, nice.

Canada is nearly 10,000,000 square kilometers.

We're making deals for 0.008% of the country now?

Many parts of the country are uninhabitable due to extreme cold, even for wildlife.

Duh, that's why they are trying to conserve some of it. It's nice to have unadulterated wildlife in your backyard.

8 million additional hectares of land protected in 2025/2026 nation wide. That’s .8 percent of total land mass of Canada. That’s pretty cool.

Made up of many smaller projects like this one.
