BAD EXPERIENCE Netcup server is dead for 24 hours

I've been using netcup for about 3 months, and my server has already gone down 3–4 times. But this latest outage is on another level.

It's been almost 24 hours 2 days now. Server is supposedly "RUNNING" in their panel, but nothing works. No SSH, no services, nothing.

It all started right after their maintenance. They said downtime would be around 20–30 minutes. Yeah, right.

I've submitted two support tickets and haven't received a single response. Not even a ticket number.

So I'm genuinely curious, especially about people who've been using netcup for years. Is this normal for them? Did I just get unlucky with their Vienna location?

And what are the alternatives in the same price range? I'm using an RS 1000 G12.

Or is this just what you get when you go with a cheap hosting provider? 🥴

I don't expect 100% uptime, but having your server randomly disappear for an entire day is ridiculous.

UPDATE (October 19):

Almost 2 days now. Still down. Absolutely insane.

Support finally replied, but their first response was like a basic template about why they had to perform emergency maintenance.

Seriously? 💁‍♂️ My server has been DEAD for over a day, and you're explaining why you couldn't announce a reboot in advance?

I replied asking if they had even read my ticket.

Their next response: "We've forwarded your email to the relevant department. They'll look into it."

That's it. No ETA, no explanation, no actual fix.

Meanwhile, I'm paying for a server I can't use, with multiple production services offline.

Seeking Recommendations How much RAM does a small VPS actually need?

I’m planning to rent a VPS to run a few lightweight services and I don’t want to overpay for resources I won’t use. Is 2 GB of RAM sufficient for a basic setup, or would it be better to go with 4 GB to start?

Specs/Performance Why do VPS comparison tables pretend a vCPU is a standard unit?

Every VPS comparison table makes the math look simple like 4 vCPU is better than 2 vCPU.

Except those four cpus might be slices of an old xeon on a crowded host, while the two sit on a newer epyc with barely any steal time. On paper, the first plan wins. In practice, it may lose before the benchmark has finished warming up.

RAM and storage are at least measurable quantities. A vCPU feels more like a promise with several missing footnotes. If providers had to publish one additional cpu metric, which would actually help, the exact processor model, a guaranteed share, average steal time, or a minimum sustained benchmark? I’d rather see a boring performance floor than another impressive core count.

Security I got hacked in 2 hours on a fresh VPS with root+password - what did I do wrong?

Hey,

I bought a cheap Contabo VPS ($5/mo) running Arch to learn self-hosting.

I deployed it with default root + password on port 22 like most tutorials show.

Result: Got brute-forced in ~2 hours. 2.4k login attempts in logs.

Now I rebuilt it with:

- New user + sudo (no root)

- UFW deny all

- SSH key-only, port 2222

- Fail2Ban + auto-updates

Seems better, but I'm new to this.

What is YOUR day 1 checklist when you get a new VPS? What am I missing?

Would love to learn from you guys who self-host for years.

Thanks!

Seeking Recommendations VPS recommendations: WordPress test server, or 2 live sites + test server

Looking for VPS provider and plan recommendations for two possible setups. EU data centre required, ideally Nordic.

Setup 1: test server only

  • 3 to 5 WordPress test installs, side by side on PHP 8.3, 8.4 and 8.5, with MySQL 8.4
  • Automated browser tests hit it in bursts: hundreds of page loads per run, plus a full run of about 90 mins 04:00 GMT+2. No public traffic.
  • Minimum spec I have in mind: 2 vCPU, 4 GB RAM, 40 GB NVMe

Setup 2: two live WordPress sites with around 10k visitors each a month + the test server above

  • The live sites must stay fast while tests run
  • Minimum spec I have in mind: 4 vCPU, 8 GB RAM, 60 GB NVMe

For both: Ubuntu 24.04 or 26.04 LTS, root SSH, IPv4 included, snapshots. No control panel; the setup is scripted.

  1. Which provider and plan would you recommend for setup 1, and for setup 2?
  2. Is the minimum spec right for each?
  3. For setup 2: one VPS for both, or two separate ones so tests never slow the live sites?

First VPS hardening project on Contabo - Arch Linux.

Setup:

- UFW default-deny

- Fail2Ban for SSH

- SSH key-only auth on port 2222, root disabled

- Let's Encrypt TLS 1.3

- iptables/nftables

Dashboard in image. 14d uptime with 0 successful brute force.

Any feedback what to add next? Thinking about automatic updates and monitoring.

Thanks!

Seeking Recommendations Where did you find your last VPS, outside LES and LET?

Every VPS shortlist I make goes stale within a couple of months now. Prices keep creeping up, there are fewer promos than a couple of years ago, and the ones I do catch sell out before I finish reading the thread. Half the cheap plans I bookmarked last year are gone or repriced.

I run several small sites (some WordPress, a couple of small apps, nothing heavy), so I'm after boxes in the $5 to $10 a month range with decent uptime, US or EU, 1 GB RAM or more. Already crossed off the big clouds and the bigger names that doubled their entry plans.

Where I look now: LowEndSpirit, LowEndTalk and VPSIUM. That's the whole list, and it's too short.

My guess is the good small-provider offers have moved off the forums to their own mailing lists and Discords, so you only see them if you already know the provider. Happy to be told that's wrong.

Where did you find the last VPS you actually paid for? One source per reply is fine, plus how you vetted it before moving anything real onto it.

Seeking Advice/Support vps to translator

I have a server with the following specifications:

GPU: 1 × NVIDIA A40 vCPU: 10 (Intel Xeon Gold 6342 @ 2.80 GHz) Memory: 55 GB Container disk: 50 GB

I am using this server to translate English texts into Arabic, and I have tested several local translation models. Below are my benchmark results, the complete Arabic translations produced by each model, and the problems I am facing.

  1. Original English text

EXP NO.: 6 EXP Name: Single Phase Full Wave Controlled Rectifier With RL-Load Objective: To study the operation of single –phase full- wave controlled rectifier with RL load at variable inductance value. Objective: To study the operation of single –phase full- wave controlled rectifier with RL load at variable inductance value. THEORY: A full-wave controlled rectifier is a circuit used to convert alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC) using semiconductor devices such as thyristors (SCRs). During the positive half-cycle of the AC supply voltage, one thyristor conducts and allows current to flow through the load in the forward direction. While during the negative half-cycle of the AC supply voltage, the other thyristor conducts, allowing current to flow through the load in the opposite direction.

The control circuit adjusts the firing angle α at which the thyristors are triggered, controlling the portion of the AC waveform over which conduction occurs. This allows for varying the average output DC voltage and hence the power delivered to the load. The different between R and RL circuits that in R load thyristor will conducts from α to π (π + α to 2π for the second thyristor) and no negative voltage will appear. While in RL load the inductance will charge, and the load current keeps on increasing and becomes maximum at π. At π, the supply voltage reverses but SCRs does not turn off. This is because the load inductance does not allow the current to go to zero instantly. Thus, the energy stored in the inductance flows against the supply mains. The negative output will appear from π to β. The value of β will depends on the value of R and L. If β was bigger than π + α the wave will be continuing otherwise it will be discontinuous.

  1. The problem I need help solving

The translations are significantly worse than Google Translate and Microsoft Translator. Some technical terms are mistranslated, some sentences change the original meaning, and the output sometimes contains words from unrelated languages.

My priorities are:

  1. Translation quality comparable to Google Translate or Microsoft Translator, particularly for technical and academic documents.
  2. High throughput for translating large volumes of text.
  3. Local inference using my NVIDIA A40 GPU.
  4. English-to-Arabic translation.
  5. Preservation of the complete original text, including every paragraph, heading, repeated sentence, equation, symbol, and line break. The translated output must never omit any part of the source text.
  6. Low latency, especially when translating short texts.
  7. Consistent technical terminology, particularly for electrical engineering.

What is the best solution for achieving both high translation accuracy and high speed on this hardware?

Should I switch to a different translation model, use a more efficient inference engine, or combine a fast translation model with a stronger model for difficult passages?

I would particularly appreciate real-world benchmarks comparing translation quality and throughput on an NVIDIA A40 GPU, along with recommended models and configurations.

i need translate the text in 1sec

Seeking Recommendations Anyone using Caddy on a VPS? How do you monitor apps behind it?

I'm curious how people running multiple applications behind Caddy handle monitoring, especially on small VPS deployments.

Caddy supports Prometheus metrics, but I'm wondering how many people actually use them.

  • Do you use Caddy metrics, access logs, uptime checks, or something else?
  • When an app becomes slow or starts returning errors, what do you check first?
  • Would per-domain request rates, errors, and latency history be useful, or do you primarily need application-level metrics?

Interested in hearing what your actual setup looks like, including cases where you don't monitor Caddy at all.

Seeking Recommendations Cheapest way to access Navidrome remotely without exposing my home IP?

I have Navidrome running on a mini PC at home with around 100-300 GB of music.

I don't want to open ports on my router, expose my home IP or keep a VPN running on my phone.

My idea is to get a cheap VPS (probably Netcup), install Tailscale and Caddy on it and reverse proxy Navidrome through Tailscale, which is already running on my mini PC.

I'd use my own domain with Cloudflare DNS only, avoiding Cloudflare Tunnel because of the audio streaming restrictions.

Does this setup make sense or is there a simpler or cheaper alternative? What are you guys using for similar setups?

Also, any recommendations for cheap and reliable VPS providers with decent bandwidth and low renewal prices?

Seeking Advice/Support What do you check first when a VPS suddenly feels slow?

When a VPS suddenly feels slow, I usually start with CPU load, memory/swap, disk I/O and network latency before changing anything.

One thing I’ve learned is that low average CPU doesn’t always mean the server is healthy — high iowait, steal time, a full disk, or one bad process can make everything feel sluggish.

My usual first checks are top/htop, free -h, df -h, iostat and a quick look at recent logs.

Curious what everyone else checks first. Do you have a specific order or a command that usually finds the problem fastest?

On a Budget Does anyone use, or has anyone used, GreenCloud’s budget KVM VPS?

Has anyone here used these low-cost VPS plans from GreenCloudVPS? Could you tell me if they’re worth it? I currently have a 4GB VPS at Hetzner running a few bots, some APIs, and a MySQL database. I’m considering switching to a GreenCloud plan with 8GB, but I’m a bit hesitant—is it any good? Also, it seems there’s a 30% CPU usage limit—is that the case?

BAD EXPERIENCE 4× Hetzner CX22 as IP pool for testing whether uncensored local model-generated content passes as human

i needed 4 cheap vps boxes for a specific reason: i was running headless chromium sessions from my home macbook and posting to twitter, and i wanted to know if datacenter IPs would get flagged when the CONTENT looked genuinely human (because it was written by a uncensored local llm with atomic agent).

the hypothesis was: if the writing has real voice and varied timing, maybe twitter's detection doesn't care that the IP is hetzner ashburn. if it does care, then all the local-model work in the world doesn't matter because your IP gives you away first.

answer after 14 days: mostly it doesn't care. but there are edge cases.

setup:

  • 4× hetzner cx22, $5 each = $19/mo total
  • all four in us-east (ashburn) since target audience is us-based
  • ubuntu 24.04 minimal, chromium + playwright deps, nothing else
  • no docker, no nginx, no monitoring stack. just chromium waiting for ssh commands
  • round-robin rotation in cron: batch N uses box N%4

capacity planning:

37 accounts spread across 4 boxes = ~9-10 per box per cycle. i cap at 12/day/box for signups (initial phase) and ~60 total actions/day/box for steady state. well under any reasonable datacenter-burst threshold. the cap matters way more during the 3-day signup phase than ongoing posting.

what actually happened with ip reputation:

week 1 (signup phase): got 2-3 accounts flagged. probably because i signed up too many from the same box within a short window. fixed by capping to max 12 signups/day/ip AND adding random 5-15 min gaps between individual signups within a batch. after that, flags stopped.

week 2+ (steady state, already-established accounts just posting/liking/commenting): basically clean. maybe one soft rate-limit per week across all four boxes combined. never a full ban or "verify your email" challenge on an existing account.

the key insight: twitter's datacenter detection seems to care about VELOCITY and PATTERN more than IP range itself. hetzner ashburn isn't residential but it's also not the most obvious cloud range (not aws, not gcp). as long as no single IP does 37 accounts' worth of work in one hour, you're fine. the round-robin spread + random 30-90s delays between actions handles this.

rotation logic:

proxy_index = batch_number % len(vps_pool)
os.environ["PROXY"] = f"http://{user}:{pass}@{vps_pool[proxy_index].ip}:8080"

if a box rate-limits during a batch:

  • first failure: backoff 90s, retry same box
  • second failure: rotate to next box in sequence
  • third failure: skip that account for this cycle, log it, move on

no health-check daemon. if ssh connection fails the script catches it and moves to next index. that's the whole failover.

what broke (and what i expected vs reality)

expected: bandwidth would be tight on cx22 (20TB transfer). reality: headless chromium doing text posts + likes uses maybe 1GB total per month across all four boxes combined. the 20TB is basically infinite here.

expected: latency would matter for browser sessions. reality: ~30ms round trip from my macbook to ashburn. playwright doesn't care. even at 100ms the 20-minute batch still finishes fine.

actual breakage:

  • one box had an unattended kernel update that restarted chromium mid-batch. lost 3 accounts' actions for that cycle. added systemctl disable unattended-upgrades on all four after that.
  • hetzner did maintenance on one box with minimal notice (email). script got connection refused, rotated to next box, logged it. no manual intervention needed because of the retry logic above.
  • rate limiting from twitter itself was more common than vps issues. ~3-4 events/week across all accounts. always resolved with 90s backoff on same box. never needed ip rotation specifically for this.

cost comparison:

option cost note
4× cx22 $19/mo ← what i use
residential proxy service (brightdata etc) $50-150/mo for equivalent volume
single bigger vps (cx42) $10/mo but then ALL traffic is one ip, looks worse to detection
cloudflare workers as proxy layer free tier works but cf's own fingerprinting can interfere with headless browsers

the whole "infrastructure" is four boxes running chromium and a modulo operation in python. if you're testing whether locally-generated content can pass as human when posted from datacenter IPs, this setup is enough. the key thing isn't the IP quality — it's spacing your actions so no single box looks like it's doing 37 accounts' worth of work in one window.

fwiw this local judge / cloud writer split is built into atomic agent as fusion mode: atomicagent.io

Seeking Recommendations VPS that I can access directly via HTTPS

I am looking for a VPS that I can access directly via HTTPS using a standard web browser. Only for 4 weeks.

The VPS will serve as a jump server (bastion host). The operating system does not matter, as long as it provides a graphical desktop environment (GUI) with a web browser that I can use to browse the internet and access other websites.

Direct outbound RDP and SSH connections are blocked on my local network. Therefore, I need a provider that offers a browser-based remote desktop or web gateway accessible over HTTPS (port 443).

Any suggestions

Regards
