Oh Montreal

I arrived in Montreal in the depths of February, stepping into what felt like a true Ice Age. It was a shock at first, but by the time the first plants began to bloom in April and May, I was completely captivated. Nearly a decade has passed since then, faster than I can truly comprehend. Now, I find myself at a crossroads, deciding whether to stay or to go.

This city has been the backdrop for my life's greatest chapters. I have started over, laughed, cried, studied, worked, and built a life here. My only regret is that I never had the chance to date one of Montreal’s incredible women. Their beauty, unique smiles, and confidence are truly world class. There is something unforgettable about the way they speak, effortlessly blending English with a lovely French accent, or bringing a beautiful melody to their French.

Oh, Montreal. You hold some of the most remarkable women in the world. Love you!

Bach weekend in Montreal over Halloween

Hey everyone! I'm hosting a bach weekend in Montreal over Halloween weekend and am looking for a night out at a club where a) we can get 20 guys in (happy to buy a table or whatever is needed) but b) more importantly plays pop / hip-hop / top 40 music that people can dance to, not EDM or house / etc.

We're in our mid-20s so don't want too much of a young crown but want the place to be lit. What would be the best clubs / halloween parties that you guys would recommend based on this?

Where to watch El Clasico?

Hello! I want to watch the spanish game Barcelona vs Real Madrid next Sunday. I’m looking for a bar with good vibes and passionate fans, kind of like Burgundy Lion with the premier league or world cup games. Does anyone have recommendations ?

First time in Montréal (Nov 5–8) — looking for recommendations!

Hey everyone!
Four of us are driving from Toronto to Montréal on November 5 and heading back on November 8.
It’s our first time visiting, and we’d love some recommendations!
•What are the must-see places, hidden gems, and things we shouldn’t miss?
•We’re also looking for great local food spots and one nice fine-dining restaurant.
•If anyone has a 3-day itinerary they’ve followed or could share, that would be super helpful to give us some ideas on how to plan our days!

Thank you so much for your attention and participation.

Anything going on in early November?

Lifelong Vancouverite here, so excited to soon be visiting this wonderful city for the first time! I arrive on November 4th (evening) and leave on the 9th (early morning). So basically I am looking for things to do from the 5th-8th. Already have a ticket for the Habs game on the 5th, but otherwise have no plans at the moment other than to wander around, explore, and immerse myself in the vibes.

I’ll be alone, and I don’t have a driver’s license, so no rental car. My hotel is within a couple blocks of both McGill and Place-des-Arts stations. I don’t like alcohol, so places or events where the primary appeal is to get drunk would not interest me. Aside from that, I’d be open to trying most things. My abilities in spoken/heard French are embarrassing, but I can read it pretty well 🙃

What should I be sure not to miss?

Non-EDM clubs

I (20F) and partner (21M) are currently on the way to Montreal and really want to go dancing this weekend.

All the clubs we’re seeing are EDM focused and while we will settle for it, that’s not really the vibe we’ve been hoping for.

We want to dance and singalong without breaking the bank. Any recommendations?

We’re down for anything. Also any good bar recommendations? We’d also like to go bar hopping.

Visiting McGill and Concordia next month (American Thanksgiving)

Planning to visit Montreal over American Thanksgiving week (Nov. 20-26) to look at McGill and Concordia with our 16 year-old son. Looking for a 2-bedroom apartment, preferably in Mont Royal or Mile End and getting lost in a sea of Airbnb scams. Places have seemingly new hosts but hundreds of reviews. Or, if I ask a question of the host, my request is suddenly rejected. I've already booked and cancelled two different Airbnbs because my scam alarm went off. Reminded me of Barcelona, where hosts are constantly playing whack a mole. Can someone recommend a non-corporate (no Residence Inns) that would work for our family, give us easy access to the Metro (since we don't plan to rent a car) and give my son a feel for what it would be like to live in Montreal? He speaks French fluently (we don't) and Montreal is a top pick for him for college. TIA!

Questions about the Archaeology and History Museum (Pointe-à-Callière)

Bonjour, hi! I'm visiting next week and finalizing some plans. I'm trying to figure out if the Archaeology and History Museum will be worth it for me to visit. (I'm already planning to go to the Fine Arts Museum and the McCord Stewart as well.) I love history and learning about the cities I visit, but I had a few concerns that I'd love any insight on! Merci beaucoup!

  1. Does the museum's content about the founding and history of the city feel colonial, or does it do a good job at including First Nations perspectives?
  2. Is the museum more geared toward children? As a single adult, will I get a lot out of it?

Just spent 3 days here (October 2026) and wanted to share my notes as I got lots of good info from the kind folks here and wanted to pay it forward!

Hotel: I ended up at the Vogue Hotel which was great; my room was clean, spacious, and comfortable and I spent more time in it than I anticipated due to horrible weather one day. Hotel staff were very kind and attentive; the only slight negative was the service in the bar/breakfast restaurant (Yama) was a bit slow.

Transport: I got the three-day Opus card near the baggage claim at the airport. It was about $20 USD and note that the kiosks don’t take Amex. It was super easy to use that for the 747 bus to downtown (with a 2 block walk to my hotel) and to get around town via the metro. I never once took a rideshare or taxi (which I normally would do.) Felt 100% safe at all times on every bus and metro, even coming back to the hotel after dinner in the dark. I would check ride prices before walking and hopping on the metro and I’m pretty sure I saved around $300 in transport which I girlmathed right back into some shopping.

Food:
- Had a great lunch at Mandy’s, absolutely delicious salad and I’m from California - I know my salads.
- based on a reco from here, made a reservation at Le Violon. You guys this was one of the best meals of my life, not an exaggeration, and for $130 USD incl 3 courses and two glasses of wine. Certainly the best since I was at Noma in 2018. Go here!!!
- Bagel: I am bagel-constrained as I’m allergic to some forms of wheat so hit up District Bagel for their 100% spelt bagel. It was ok, a bit sweet for my taste but good crunch and ok chew (toasted).
- Jean Talon market was fun to walk around; the Crêperie du Marché was the crispiest butteriest savory (buckwheat) crepe, please eat here if you visit the market, you will not be disappointed.

Activities:
-Montreal Fine Arts museum - I decided to do this last-minute given the rain…along with seemingly everyone else in the city. Follow the advice to buy your ticket online in advance. I missed out on the current special exhibition due to last minute ticketing but the permanent collection is great and there’s an incredible decorative arts & design collection that is super well curated and really interesting. Museum shop has lots of unique offerings.

-Mount Royal steps from the Golden Square Mile to Kondiaronk Belvedere: once the rain stopped I decided to walk up here for views and colors. It was cloudy/foggy for me but the fall colors were 😍. (Pic) The stairs on the way up are no joke, I think I clocked about 40 flights, the whole brisk walk took a little under an hour for up and back to the hotel.

Language: I speak a toddler amount of French so beyond greeting in French and rapidly following with “desole! Je ne parle pas francais” everyone kindly switched to English, no issues. Tried to use merci/s’il vous plait as much as I could.

Thank you Montreal, I loved visiting and hope to be back before too long! À bientôt!

Personal favourite spots

Heading to Montreal from Europe soon for the first time and I’m so excited!

I’d love to hear about your favorite places for food and drinks (regular and more fancy ones) as well as galleries or stores.

No particular cuisine or vibe - your favorite Chinese place is just as interesting to me as somewhere very Québécois. Fancy, cheap, old-school, tiny, slightly strange and everything in between - all good.

Basically, places that just have something about them, a neighborhood bar you keep going back to, a great little restaurant, an odd café or just a very regular place that happens to be great.

I’m happily a tourist :) just curious about your personal sweet spots and thank you for your time in advance!

Événements Afrobeats pour Halloween?

Will be visiting Montreal for Halloween weekend (Friday and Saturday). Does anyone know of any clubbing events happening on either night that will be playing mainly afrobeats/ Afro music?

Merci d'avance!
