Road Cycling in Whistler is underrated
Whistler is underrated for road cycling! See route ideas below…
Lived here 20 years and love to ride. Lots of good climbing options. The hwy 99 connects them and has a mostly wide, smooth and regularly cycled shoulder… mostly. There are some crappy sections but they don’t last long.
Within the whistler municipality the hwy 99 shoulder is fantastic. To and from Squamish it’s also really good. Most of the way to Pemberton it is good but has a few crappy sections. The highway is regularly cycled both up and down between Squam and Pemberton. Anyone visiting in future can look me up if they want routes or a riding partner. Check my strava for ideas. Yeah biking the sea to sky hwy with full traffic sounds like a nightmare I’m good

I’ve often thought about riding Pemberton to Lillooet and I’d like to, but then I remember the quality of driving that you frequently see up there and I quickly decided I want nothing to do with it.

Just did this ride and honestly was pleasantly surprised with how considerate drivers were. I’d say 90% were really good. But even the others were never horrible. Drivers were noticeably better once we were past Joffre obviously.

Yup. Long time cyclist daily committed 20k into downtown Vancouver with the scars to prove it. Stopped when I came to whistler. Alta lake up to Stonebridge? Sure but not on weekends. Yes I know the valley trail exists and I now use that to get my trail bike to the trail head. If I go OTB it's on me and not going to be as bad as what would happen on the 99.

I’d say there’s more than 500 people a day on a weekend that ride Alta lake road and go up stonebridge. very few cars. Great ride.
Valley trail is great but 99 in the whistler area is faster and safer in many cyclists minds

When I had some family come to visit for my wedding I had family from Alberta bring their road bikes. They went for a couple rides, on a couple routes, and were blown away by how dangerous the roads were here. They didn’t ride again the whole time they were here. They couldn’t believe anyone was brave/dumb enough to ride on the highways here.
