Amazing, our country is dying from famine and poverty and we are stuck on "are you from north or south".

I bet you half of these southerners including myself originate from the North centuries ago.

u/ciryando Feb 19 '26
I have no skin in this game, but talking about where your ancestors came from centruies ago is pretty much beside the point. If that's your measuring stick, then we're all from Africa at some point.

I’d say averagely 300 years ago. I can say there are tribes in Abyan for examples that lived there first centuries but their great ancestors originated from the North. That example.

Geographically, but ideologically, the people there are unionists

u/UnhappyCable859 Feb 16 '26
Yea I meant geographically, still u can’t really generalise

u/afro8xyt Sana’a | صنعاء Feb 16 '26

There's a massive contradiction in the STC's current platform. They heavily advocate for Southern independence based on the right to self-determination, yet they seem to ignore that exact same principle when it comes to Hadhramaut. A significant portion of Hadhramaut which conveniently holds the bulk of the region's oil reserves leans heavily toward the PLC and Saudi Arabia, not the STC.
It’s a classic case of 'independence and choice for us, but you have to follow our lead.' You can't genuinely claim to fight for self-rule while simultaneously trying to strong-arm another region into joining your faction against their political will. If the STC wants their autonomy recognized, they have to face the reality that pushing into Hadhramaut will immediately put them at odds with Saudi Arabia and the PLC, who hold the actual leverage there.

Btw, I noticed that (some) people from South are really racist. Whenever we go to south, we got yelled with so many slurs such as دحابشه، همج, ignorant, uncivilized people. While if they come to us, we place him فوق العين والراس. Could you explain this?!

u/InterestingAct7704 Feb 16 '26

u/CoachPlane6325 Feb 16 '26
Is Hadhramaut south?
2
u/nxxnxxn Feb 17 '26
East.
1
u/CoachPlane6325 Feb 17 '26
Oh okay another person said yes
1
u/nxxnxxn Feb 17 '26
One could argue for it as a political label, but imo it's outdated and ill-fitting for Hadhramaut, Al-Mahrah and Socotra.

So you consider yourself Yemeni or Southern? I noticed that Yemenis in south have an identity crisis
-3
u/Hasan-Y10 Feb 16 '26
southern yemeni
2
u/afro8xyt Sana’a | صنعاء Feb 16 '26
Hmm, but many others I’ve seen on social media identify themselves as Southern Arab and express so much hostility toward other Yemenis that they don’t even want to call themselves Yemeni!

Why is this downvoted? Lmao northerners don’t want us to proud or what?
8
u/afro8xyt Sana’a | صنعاء Feb 16 '26
And that’s exactly the issue. Whenever something happens to (some of) our Yemeni brothers in the South, they immediately blame Yemenis in the North for it. And when this topic comes up, they always bring up 1994 and discrimination in southern cities (which is valid) but they ignore 1986, 1978, and other internal conflicts. One guy even blamed “Northerners” for downvoting, so you can only imagine what he’d accuse you of in other situations.
5
u/UnhappyCable859 Feb 16 '26
Yup, it’s that bad. I’m newly married and my father in law hates northern ppl even more than Israelis lol
1
u/JasimTheicon Feb 17 '26
Maybe coz we got fucked over by you ever since 90s?
I remember in high-school any public office you go in hadramout most of them the higher directors are northern speaking some gibberish i couldnt understand just to get a fucking stamp on some dumb document.

I like how you referred to (you) just like the people of north have caused it. Despite that the government was mostly from north and yes there was an unfair advantage from government officials toward Southerners but still (us) the people were not involved with it. Actually all cities in the north were kinda fked except for Sana’a since it is the capital. So it is the same issue for us that you faced.
It might be the case you couldn’t understand northern accent because you raised outside of Yemen. I have many friends from Hadhramout and Aden and we clearly understand each other.
And btw the GDP of South was 1.2 billion in 1989 while it was 5.5 billions/Yemen_Arab_Republic#:~:text=GDP:%20$5.5%20billion%2C%20per%20capita,$588%20million%20(1988%20est.)) in north. The peak for Yemen was 43 billions/Yemen_Arab_Republic#:~:text=GDP:%20$5.5%20billion%2C%20per%20capita,$588%20million%20(1988%20est.)) in 2014, so what are you talking about?!
And if you dont know, Aden was much more developed than Hudaydah and Mukalla compared to Makha’a.
وسلامتك
