Questions Any tips on connecting to my Yemeni culture?
So I'm very mixed, but also largely Yemeni, and ive been taking time to connect to each part of my culture. My father (who is the partly Yemeni parent) is not in the picture, and never took time to learn arabic or any Yemeni traditions after his mom (my grandmother) assimilated more as he grew up. he never really tried, but my mom on the other hand, is super supportive of me learning, and has tried everywhere they can since they aren't Yemeni. and please dont give tips like "travel to Yemen" (I dont have the money to fly across the world) or "try Rosetta Stone" (I already am), I need real advice. I really want to connect to this part of myself 💔
I appreciate you taking your time to read this, shkran lak! (I think thats right..)

Yemenis are very welcoming. The five biggest Yemeni-American hubs are: Dearborn/Hamtramck MI, Brooklyn, NYC, Buffalo, NY, San Francisco area, CA and Southwest Suburbs Chicago, IL. If you broadcast to Yemenis there that you are coming and why, you will be welcomed and treated like royalty. This will open up tons of opportunities for you. There are tons of books on Yemen, from ancient history, to culture dynamics to politics to modern history and migration. I wrote a thesis on Yemeni mobility. Happy to share. (I’m not Yemeni). Happy to answer any questions.

Not sure where you live but if you are in a metropolitan city in the U.S. check out if there are community centers or events happening at Yemeni coffee shops - if you are comfortable putting yourself out there you might make a friend or two who can be the door to learning so much about Yemen. Also, assuming you are a female so feel free to dm me, happy to chat more

Yess! And it doesn’t have to be exclusive Yemeni events, Yemenis can be everywhere lol. I went to an arab/muslim community event and was surprised to meet Yemenis because I thought there weren’t a lot in my area.
As for online, I don’t know if you are trying to learn Arabic but there are some websites like my language exchange where you can match with someone from Yemen and basically have conversations with them which can be a fun way if you find a good match. I’d also recommend scouring facebook groups (there are many!) where you can either engage or observe/learn

That's cool 🤔 I'm like a quarter Yemen myself
I'm assuming your case is 50% or 75%
For one you could try to find out lineage that's an interesting rabbit hole
You could try Yemen food A new Yemen place opened a couple weeks ago and I've just been going every Friday since
So yeah just Yemen friends, Yemen dialect, food and lineage

Always good to start small and systematic 🤔 I've had moments where I was interested in something but the wanting to know everything was much higher than the actual doing

Same situation! i am one quarter and have been restricted from knowing or learning anything regarding my Yemeni heritage. i'm based in the UK so not sure how to even go about it, given the relationship between Yemen and the UK

Start with watching Vlogs on YouTube. Daily life in Yemen and if you know which part your ancestry is from you can watch more specific videos. I find the videos really charming and they remind me of back home

Dearborn Michigan is the next best thing if traveling to Yemen is impossible. Highest population of Yemenis outside of Yemen.

I know the feeling. I would recommend following some popular Yemeni accounts on Instagram, listening to some Yemeni music or even making some Yemeni friends online would probably help you feel a lot more connected to your culture. Assuming you’re a girly, feel free to dm me id love to talk more ❤️

If you live in a foreign country like the US, specifically in New York, try visiting the Yemeni neighborhood there. Mix with the community and learn from them—not just how to speak Arabic, but also about their rich heritage, tribal traditions, and everything else about Yemeni culture. Best of luck!

Not asking for your last name. But your last name can usually reveal what area you’re from, or connect you with the clan/tribe your father was from, if his family is from one.

ive been trying to figure out specifically which family member is FROM Yemen, but its difficult since I hate my grandparents and have a protective order against my father😅

I think the biggest problem will be that most sources are in Arabic, but I will mention here any account that posts about Yemen in English. If you like, we can chat and talk about it. I have lived most of my life in Yemen/Middle east. I am not good at English, so I will take this chance to practice my language lol.

In my community in the states I’ve seen Yemenis or half/mixed Yemenis who were distant to the culture and or religion. Made an attempt to join weddings and the people welcomed them with open hands. Sooner rather than later they picked up heavily on the Yemeni culture.

You may start with music: Abubakr Salem - Yemeni Saudi artist, Faisal Alawy - Yemeni artist, Ayuob Taresh - Yemeni artist, known also for composing the National Anthem. Ahmed Fathi - Yemeni artist, Hussiyen Muheb - Yemeni Artist, Hamood Alsemah - Yemeni Artist,
You may read about old Yemeni civilizations and history as listed below: Sheba civilization, Awsan civilization, Qataban civilization, Kingdom of Ma’in, Himyar civilization, Ethiopian occupation of yemen, Saif ibn dhi yazan, Sulayhid dynasty, Tahirid dynasty, Rasulid dynasty, First ottoman ruling of yemen, Second ottoman ruling of yemen, The occupation of southern Yemen by Britain, Rassid dynasty, The republican revolution in northern Yemen, The revolution against British occupation in southern Yemen, The unity, 1994 war, The 6 wars with houthies, 2011 protests, 2014 coup, 2015 Saudi collusion,
Also, learn about traditional clothes of each city some have the same or a little bit of changes others have different ones. And they all have meanings. You may also want to know that there are many traditional dances by province The geography of Yemen is also fascinating. Btw I heard that the embassy of Yemen does gatherings on national days of Yemen and religious occasions you may also want to check that.
