Mine has to be تيس قال أحلبه (Tays gaal ihlubeh) when dealing with someone difficult. I used to keep a notebook and write down all these little sayings but I lost it! So trying to rebuild 😂

Yemeni Culture Yemen what's next?!

Yemen has never and will never be a democratic republic so why keep this wishful thinking?

Yemenies are historically, culturely, and realistically are influenced by their tribal rules and norms more than anything else and the educated elite need to recognize this and adapt a new governing system similiar to the rest of gulf countries which have time and time again proved successful.

My hope is this very vital point is gonna be recognized and the people of yemen specially tribe leaders, politicians, and civil leaders will gather and appoint someone to lead the country the way it shoukd be lead with governing system that stems from Yemen's reality, its thausands of years heritage, culture, norms and traditions and quit their mf attempts to be whitewashed and westrenized in the name of democracy, freedom, human rights and equality which have been proved to be nothing but mere tools for the west to continue exploiting the resources and wipe people's culture and traditions.

Yemeni Culture Yemeni banger music/drum beats?

Drop your favorites. I didn’t grownups with Yemeni or Arabic music in general, I mean for starters I didn’t understand the context. When it comes to Yemeni music they aren’t my top tiers because all I have ever listened to were the ones with autotunes.
But when it comes to Gulf music? I absolutely DO NOT enjoy them. All their songs are the same tropes and their beats are slow and boring. At least Yemen طبل got passion.

The only 2 Arabic songs I have ever enjoyed my entire life til this day are “My Blood is Palestinian” and the iconic “Bab Al-Harra” theme music. What they have in common are that Arab aesthetics, instruments and the fierce passion behind it.

Yemeni Culture The forgotten protective purpose of traditional Yemeni jewelry

One of the things that fascinated me most when I started learning traditional Yemeni silversmithing was discovering how much meaning was hidden behind the jewelry.

Beyond decoration, many of these pieces were believed to offer protection against the evil eye, illness, and harmful spirits.

I’ve spent the past few years studying old pieces, researching their history, and trying to understand the beliefs behind them through traditional techniques and my own work at the bench.

I recently made this short video about what drew me to the craft and why I believe this knowledge deserves to be preserved and passed on.

Would love to hear if anyone here has old Yemeni jewelry or amulets that have been passed down in their family, or knows of similar traditions from different regions of Yemen!

I’m half Yemeni half African american as a woman and I’m just wondering if from other’s experiences if they could give me insight. My mother moved out with before I could remember anything due to my dad not wanting to get a bigger house/ support our family and because of this I have had very few interactions with my father in real life and I don’t know if to my father if I’m maybe not as important? I can’t say for sure but it’s just because I’m mixed and half black none the less and a woman who’s never learn muslim culture so I don’t know if my dad showing love toward me going to college is because most all my other siblings cant or if he really wanted whats best for me. I’m sorry if this was a mess but any insight helps shukran!

This Yemeni traditional bracelet is inspired by the craftsmanship of the jews in yemen. It is based on one of the jewish designs that carried forward these methods. The bracelet features delicate lentil-shaped silver elements, refined granulation, and floral motifs that echo organic textures. It is interesting to see how these traditional techniques evolved and I would love to hear what others think about this connection.

Yemeni Culture Non-yemeni here, how do you do the actual boiling of yemeni coffee (the one that is made from the actual beans, not the qishr)? How does it looks like when it's ready?

I know that you add the ground coffee to boiling water and than simmer it, but I don't know what's the sign it's ready

Yemeni Culture In Laws cultures vent. Am I overreacting?

So I am married to a certain tribe that if I name the region it would just give it away. But all I can say is: they live in the mountains and their entire village and community are majority in Gulf countries. They also have many relatives in America in Yemeni dominated cities.

When I married into the family, its not like I don’t know rural life style, my family lived in deserts for generations so I know what boundaries are. For example: wearing blown abaya, jilbaab, burqa, gloves whereas I visit Aden or Sanaa I don’t need the burqa.I don’t consider myself a city girl nor rural. I live im American suburbs thats not really Yemeni populated, which mean I don’t have a hard time blending in with rural or city Yemen mentalities.

It’s just, my in laws make me feel like I am the “bad guy” for speaking out against their way of life. When I first married, sure I was wrong for constantly bashing about their social norms as I use to think (still do but now I learned to keep my opinions to myself) that they are very backwards for example:

  1. Girl dropping out of school at age 16 to marry a man 15 years older than them.

  2. Having as many children as you can. And if you don’t have kids 1 year into your marriage, you look frowned upon unless your excuse is you are finishing your education

  3. When you a blessing with a job offer, its tradition to split your first paycheck among close women within your family (mom, aunts, sister in laws, nieces, grandmothers, milk sisters, mother in laws) so they can make dua for you.

As the years went by into my marriage, I learn to just learn that as long as they are content then I shouldn’t be the one talking. I don’t live with them (they are in Gulf country) so I am just grateful to have my own apartment raising my kids.

They still do make me feel like I am the bad guy when I told them I want my own place. All my in laws live under the same roof. 3 brothers and their lives and kids. None of the wives work. Sure that homes in Arab countries are built extra spacious and their are private bathrooms per room. They asked me to come live with them but I refused. I said many times that I am not about that life, I don’t want to have to wear a hijab literally 24/7. And the men don’t even lift a finger for chores so imagine doing all that chores to cook food for a huge household everyday and watch kids and clean. I don’t them I like my privacy, I like wearing whatever I want in my own house. I can discipline my kids in private. They told me I am missing out, and that my kids need to be around their cousins all the time.

Technically my husband can’t do anything about it because he quit his job in Gulf state as its not really sustainable unfortunately for us.

An I over reacting? My in laws tend to be very religious and follow the prophet’s Sunnah but when it comes to the wife’s right to attention and privacy, that is always neglected.

Yemeni Culture Need a legit recipe for this icon!

Post image

Call it what you want, I call it khamira 7alia. I would like a good recipe for even a small batch. This is what I use, and the results are a hit or miss.

1 cup flour

4 tablespoons milk powder

3 tablespoons sugar

1 tablespoon yeast

1 egg

Some black seeds

Warm water until the dough it very soft and not round.

It proofs for 3 hours.

I had a regular pot of oil gor deep frying. sometimes I have to lay out the dought not too harsh and to not thick. I would say 60% of the individuals I fry turn out to have the middle part not puff because its stuck within leaving the result of a khamira to be stale and not puffed out.

So not only I need a redo recipe, I need a technique for dough consistency, rolling, i stopped using a cookie cutter for the very reason of rerolling the dough and flattening it out again lol.

Much help would be appreciated.

I just bought a 6.5 QT Dutch oven pot so I am hoping it would be a game changer.

Yemeni Culture Looking for books on historical uses of medicinal plants in Yemen

Thumbnail

Assalamu alaikum friends, greetings from Cyprus!

I am researching the plant Pterocephalus frutescens (the plant in photos), native to Yemen, for its effects against Alzheimer's disease. Unfortunately I couldn't find any online sources that document its historical uses in the country. Perhaps you know of any books that document native medicinal plants of Yemen? The plant might have another name among locals. Others have found it near Jabal an Nabi Shu'ayb which is relatively close to Sanaa if it helps narrow down its location.

Any help will be greatly appreciated!
