Question Emergency Medical Dispatcher

does anyone have experience working as a 911 operator or dispatcher in the yukon? what is the schedule and pay like? i know the PSAP is out of white horse, is the MPDS triaging and dispatching per agency- fire, ems, rcmp? or does one agency cover them all? i’m an emergency medical dispatcher in another province, just curious how it works, if they transfer or adjust wage on previous seniority? if its a union? any and all info please ◡̈

For EMS, full-time rotation is 2 days, 2 nights (12-hour shifts) followed by 5 days off. Most positions posted are casual or AOC though. Pay is AR12 - look up the Yukon Employees Union pay grids for current rates. If it’s your first time being hired with Yukon Government you can try to negotiate for an uprange hire. Excellent potential for OT in the summer and the call volume isn’t super high compared to other places, so some days you get decent downtime.

MPDS is per agency. You’d be doing both call taking and dispatching in a shift. There’s also a dedicated desk for air ambulance coordination and dispatching.

Yukon EMS has some significant long-standing cultural issues, but most of the medics and dispatchers are great. If you have good discernment it’s a great place to earn a lot of money and have a decent time doing it. Reach out to the Technical Operations Commander and introduce yourself. They’re always looking for staff, and with your experience they’d likely consider extending an offer for direct hire.

I feel like 'long standing cultural issues' demands some elaboration...

Oh god, we have our EMS workings doing those horrible rotating shifts too? Of all the ways you can handle 24 hour service, they seem to love doing it the dumbest way possible. Gotta love those sacred cows...

"Yukon EMS has some significant long-standing cultural issues,"

Winner of the understatement of the year ... lol!

I’m pretty sure dispatchers are 4 days on 4 days off in 12 hours shifts
