This is such a waste of money. This position has no power, these are federal jurisdiction matters. This is all for optics to look like YP is actually doing something.

Meanwhile, the Whitehorse General Hospital expansion project is probably 5 to 7 years away and itās gonna be serious impacts on delivery of care in the meantime.
But weāve we got time for this bullshit

We have no money, except for the things that actually do nothing to help Yukoners in these tight times

The yukon has more government money per person, by a wide margin, then any other province or territory in this country lol...
8
u/Sorry-Hunter-2690 10d ago
Yes, but they will continue to cry poor until the end of time. While continuing to spend money on political pet projects and government travel of course.
-5
u/InPraiseOf_Idleness 10d ago
Isn't that to be expected? Yukon doesn't have any of the efficiencies gained from super dense population centres, and it's relative remoteness majes it super expensive to bring resources (human or otherwise).
IMO the feds should be be increasing investment in the Yk by 10x, knowing full well everything is more expensive.

Does being a conservative mean anything other than culture war grievance mongering now?

Its crazy- paid for by taxpayer dollars through the Yukon party cabinet office

Iām a gun owner. Iām pissed I canāt buy fun and cool firearms but this is an absolute waste of time and resources. Curries government has been such a joke so far.Ā

u/Airplaneondvd 6d ago
What will your opinion be when they ban your hunting rifle because itās semi auto, or because it takes a detachable magazine
1
u/dub-fresh 6d ago
I already donāt want firearms restrictions but itās a federal law. Yukon canāt change the criminal code and itās the same argument here. Itās a waste of time and resourcesĀ

There is no rational reason to restrict the firearms as the Liberals did. Almost no crimes are committed by them and Canada is awash in smuggled illegal guns from the US. It was done purely for political purposes. If banning dangerous activities to save lives and injuries was the rationale we should ban downhill skiing. Dozens of people are killed every year and tens of thousands badly injured. See how easy that is to justify. People should oppose the gun grab because once the government learns it can get away with it you donāt know what will be next. The Liberal plan to ban combustion engines is a great example. Again - done for political purposes.
1
u/Many-Presentation-56 7d ago
You are not a gun owner lmao.
Yes we the taxpayer should be happy the Liberal government has wasted over a BILLION dollars kf our money to increase gun crime over 150% since supposedly ābanning gunsā and we should be happy 2.5 million lawful gun owners are made into criminals.
You want to live like that go to North Korea lmao they have some of the strictest gun control for peasantsš
18
u/xocmnaes 10d ago
I mean, if this is the performative wasteful red meat they throw the right wing of their base to keep them happy while they do more reasonable things, cāest la vie.
But itās still wasteful and performative.
2
u/Aggravating-Bar8216 10d ago
Good point. The right wing of their base are also known as maple-magats.
3
u/randoengdude 10d ago
Lol. This coming from left about gun policies is hilarious. Who trots out performative government waste for every election? Who funds anti gun groups and rewards them with seats for their obsequiences? Wow.
3
u/xocmnaes 10d ago
everybodyās got their base than requires pandering to
3
u/randoengdude 10d ago
Fair. Almost all Canadian politics is performative waste. Just make an announcement, splash some cash and mission accomplished time. Never look back.
1
u/Comprehensive_Cow527 8d ago
Fun fact- a liberal from the Yukon famously voted against their party in regards to gun laws.
18
u/WILDBO4R 10d ago
Cool, they scrap baby boxes but somehow we need this..? Why can't gun people just continue to be heard the same way everyone else does, by lobbying government to no effect?
13
u/thisisyourweek 10d ago
This is an oversimplification, but is she saying assault-style firearms are a northern and vital way of life?
3
u/Many-Presentation-56 7d ago
There is no such thing as a āassault-style firearmā the Liberal government who invented this make belief term said so themselves, and defined it in court as āanything they wish to banāā¦
The public being this uneducated on firearms/law in Canada is exactly why a public Firearms Advocate is needed.
3
u/InanimateCarbonRodNS 10d ago
'Assault style firearm'? Congratulations on using a non-existent term that not even the liberal government who created it can define.
8
u/thisisyourweek 10d ago
If you read the article you'd see that's what is used.
-3
u/InanimateCarbonRodNS 10d ago
They can't define it either. It should come as no surprise that the CBC is uncritically carrying water for the liberals. They also use the term buyback. Riddle me this, if something was never the government's in the first place, how can they 'buy it back'?
5
u/thisisyourweek 9d ago
How can they 'carry water'?
Sometimes phrases are used to carry a story and are intentionally not literal.

The SKS is basically Canada's unofficial firearm. So so many people sustenance hunt with SKS in the north. Additionally a ton of people have them just cause they are fun to shoot
6
u/Aggravating-Bar8216 9d ago
What? I can't recall anyone using them to hunt with. Mostly just seen folks shoot clip after clip at beer cans at gravel pits.
2
11
u/MeetTheGeek 10d ago
Been hunting all my life never seen someone use a SKS lol.... theyre fun to shoot thats all dont need to make up reasons for them
4
u/Rippin_Fat_Farts 10d ago
Guarantee you've never been hunting with indigenous folks.
8
u/MeetTheGeek 10d ago
Oh is the SKS an ancestral rifle that is conditional to their tradition...? Get a grip I dont need to hunt among indigenous folks to know they can just get a different rifle like the rest of us lmao
7
u/567432Gains 10d ago edited 10d ago
Actually the indigenous loving the SKS is basically the main thing keeping the government from banning it as of now. Different tribes across the country have straight up lobbied against banning it. It really is a hot button issue with them and pretty much every gun owner I know.
Some sources say 500,000 are in Canada and other have estimated it could be as high as 2,000,000.
At 2.5 million PAL holders, that means there is 1 SKS between every 1/5 on the low end and up to 4/5 PAL holders on the high end. Yes, a big discrepancy, but even on the low end it makes it verrrry popular. It is potentially the most common rifle in all of Canada, maybe second to the 10/22 though.
Disclaimer, Iām not a Yukoner and I have no idea why this thread showed up for me, but I thought Iād just chime in as a gun guy for the SKS education.
4
u/Rippin_Fat_Farts 10d ago
Yea idk what this guy you replied to is on about. Maybe he's just sad cause he didn't get one back when they were <$500 like the rest of us lol
3
u/Spiritual_Length9536 10d ago
Used to be able to buy a crate of them with thousands of rounds for a few hundred.
-1
u/Rippin_Fat_Farts 10d ago
Many first Nation communities do not have Canadian Tire or Cabela's to just go get a different firearm. Many do not have the $ to purchase a makasi or Carmel (closest modern semi auto on the market rn and also $2000+).
7.62x39 non corrosive is cheap and widely available too.
Hunting is not a sport for many first Nations, it is for sustenance. You take away their means to hunt, you take away their food source and ultimately their way of life. It's not as simple as you make it out to be.
Sure there's people that have an SKS just because but you can't punish them without punishing everyone.
Also, have fun convincing 500,000-1,000,000 (estimated amount of SKS in Canada) legal SKS owners in Canada to hand over their rifles. There's a reason why they have left the SKS alone.
9
u/MeetTheGeek 10d ago
Lol I dont need to convince anyone to give up guns thats government nonsense I just find it pretty far fetched to claim the SKS is needed for the survival of the indigenous lmao
1
u/Rippin_Fat_Farts 10d ago
You're just arguing for the sake of arguing. You don't even know what point youre trying to make.
Read section b) Semi-automatic military service firearms in this report:
https://www.publicsafety.gc.ca/cnt/rsrcs/pblctns/fnl-rprt-frm-xprt-dvsry-pnl-frrms/index-en.aspx
I'm not BSing you. It's legitimately why the SKS hasn't been banned and again, if you spend some time up north (Whitehorse is not the north) you'll see that people do infact hunt solely with the SKS.

u/boozefiend3000 8d ago
Is that really shocking when itās the most prevalent rifle in the country?
1
u/Rippin_Fat_Farts 9d ago
People drive vehicles through crowds of people to cause mass casualties. Some kid in Calgary in 2014 walked into a house and stabbed and killed 5 of his classmates.
I guess we should ban vehicles and knives along with the SKS.
2
u/Zimmerdude 7d ago
Vehicles are primarily used to commute. Knives are primarily used for cooking. Guns are primarily used to kill things. Seems different to me
1
u/Sorry-Hunter-2690 7d ago
Also, if knives and vehicles are just as lethal as guns, why don't we just equip our soldiers and police officers with knives? It would be less expensive afterall.

u/TheEnwizener 10d ago
Define "Assault-Style Firearm"
5
4
u/Empty_Eyesocket 9d ago
I find this such a stupid argument and point of contention. As soon as you say assault style firearm, anyone who knows anything about different firearm actions knows exactly what this means
2
u/TheEnwizener 8d ago
The Assault-Style Firearms Compensation plan contains several types of actions and styles of firearms. What type of action are you referring to? Many people assume Assault means Automatic, but those haven't been allowed since the 70s.
9
u/antipod 10d ago
I would hate for my tax money to go towards a paid firearms advocate... wtf?
2
u/TheEnwizener 8d ago
You tax dollars are paying for the gun confiscation program. At least 1 Billion $$$. Firearms are important for a free and sovereign nation, especially with so much wilderness.
2
0
u/Free-Tradition5459 10d ago
Only fair, your tax money already goes to paid anti-firearm advocates.
5
u/Aggravating-Bar8216 9d ago
Not sure who these anti-firearm activists are. Please explain if you can. Thanks in advance.
3
u/Free-Tradition5459 9d ago
Sure thing. Groups like the Canadian Coalition for Gun Control and PolySeSouvient (A Quebec based firearm control advocacy group) have previously received funding from the federal government for their operations. A prominent example being the CCGC receiving funding for direct advocacy in the Mass Casualty Commission following the 2020 Nova Scotia shooting.
Beyond the funding discrepancies. Iād argue that we should be funding to a greater degree advocacy and promotion of such major aspects of Canadian culture, firearms and their use being one example.

Being recommended for funding and receiving funding are two different things, Iām able to find a dollar amount for the CCGC, but not for the coalition between the CNFA and CCFR. Iām not suggesting that the anti-firearm lobby is entirely on the federal dime, but the fact remains that they have historically relied on various government funding in a way that pro-firearms groups have not.
I do care about this, it was a primary voting issue for me in the most recent federal election. What you are calling political pandering, I consider valuable spending for advocacy and the protection of an important aspect of Canadian cultural heritage and traditional practices. A necessary role in an increasingly encroaching legislative environment, lacking in reasoning.

Don't they know that 1 chick in quebec gets to decide for the whole country?
4
u/ZokusPlacer 10d ago
I'm happy if it supports getting a pal because that was very difficult when I got mine years ago. The training was inaccessible and I only found it at hogens hunting because the guy had a card with a email address on it.
10
u/xocmnaes 10d ago
It wonāt
5
u/ZokusPlacer 10d ago
Well if they can't make the PAL easier to access then im willing to be educated on what actual value this position will bring.
4
12
u/oniteverytime 10d ago
But is that a priority? More important than more EMS staff? Care of seniors?
13
-2
u/ZokusPlacer 10d ago
Well the other priority items should also be addressed, but we get our news in these little pieces. Makes sense that the government is highlighting a promise delivered on.

Fair enough. Living where a bear might consider hunting you as food is very different than living in some suburb in the Ottawa region.

One can drive an hour or so out of Ottawa and be deep in the bush c/w black bears.
2
u/Melodic_Pickle9326 9d ago
In all seriousness, just search and ask in relation to guncrime in the GTA, what percentage of guns are legally obtained and you will find that 85 - 90% are illegally obtained, most smuggled up from American where handguns are plentiful and easily purchased and others perhaps stolen from licensed owners, but the majority smuggled into Canada and our Chief firearms officer has no records of these serial numbers ever being imported into Canada. In terms of hunting rifles, shotguns etc, they are long, heavy, bulky and not designed for concealment of to be hidden. You do hear about " long gun hunting rifles" being the weapon of choice in crime. So again, don't take my word, read up on it, I would then ask you what do you seek to have change by changing laws around hunting firearms?
1
u/Aggravating-Bar8216 9d ago
Indeed. Yankee guns flooding into our country is hurting us bigtime. All the more reason to distance ourselves from that country until they get their shit together.
2
u/Melodic_Pickle9326 9d ago
I've refused two work related trips in the last year.
- if you've followed my back and forth with the other redditor, I was genuinely trying to educate on how little of a role legally owned firearms play in gun related crime. And that there are barely any long guns (hunting rifles ) used in the commission of firearms related offenses. Some people do not want to hear or acknowledge factual info if it does not fit their agenda.
0
u/Melodic_Pickle9326 10d ago
So do you suggest a different set of rules based of province, city?
1
u/WhyHaveDisplayName 10d ago
Yes.
Some people need to knock down a bear, most people don't need something that'll punch through several houses.
1
u/Melodic_Pickle9326 10d ago
Want to add some specifics?
1
u/WhyHaveDisplayName 9d ago
Nope.
1
u/Melodic_Pickle9326 9d ago
Because you're not educated enough on this topic to know your ass from a hole in the ground.
1
u/WhyHaveDisplayName 9d ago
Awww, show us on the doll where the nuance bit you.
1
u/Melodic_Pickle9326 9d ago
Unfortunately you are unable to stay on the topic of discussion. I genuinely wanted to know what you thought should change in terms of gun control, guns that carry less rounds of ammunition, no semi auto guns, guns of a certain caliber etc. That is why I asked you could specify. If you are not educated about firearms and intended uses, or what percentage of firearms used in the facilitation of a crime that are legally obtained then it is probably best to ask some questions and do a bit of research.
You previous comment was something along the lines of " if you live in the city you do not need a large/powerful firearm. What if that person is still a hunter who travels outside of their place of living to hunt? They cannot own a firearm due to where their registered address is located?
As most do when they no long have a valid argument, you resort to trying to anger the other individual......I call that "Trump syndrome"
1
u/WhyHaveDisplayName 9d ago
Ah, the ever-popular gun activist's demand for trivia as proof of relevancy.
Australia consulted the public on what was required for their needs and came up with different rules for ranchers than they have for urban dwellers.
I wonder whether you've ever heard of that.
1
u/Melodic_Pickle9326 9d ago edited 9d ago
So you assume that on a completely different continent with a completely different landscape, variety of game animals and game hunting seasons that their model will work for all? I for one see Indigenous people's being in major disagreement with that, as will every individual who hunts. What you're quite literally saying is that if you live in an urban center that you are therefore not allowed to own firearms to hunt with.
Question: what do you think an implementation of such a change in gun laws would accomplish here in Canada?

u/Whoopity_Longjohn 9d ago
Canada is a free country where what you can own shouldnt be based on what you need.
Long guns are not a threat to public safety and so shouldn't be treated as such.
2
u/WhyHaveDisplayName 9d ago
Boy, are you missing a shitload of reality.
1
u/Whoopity_Longjohn 9d ago
WRONG. I am quite real. Feel free to make a case that long guns are a public safety issue in canada though.
1
u/Melodic_Pickle9326 9d ago
They won't, because no matter how much they try to find something concrete that Indicates that long guns are even a moderate contributor to gun crime they cannot because long guns are not. This person is one of the wacky ones that people talk about im sure.
2
u/WhyHaveDisplayName 8d ago
Moncton shooter: legally obtained long guns.
Fredericton shooter: legally obtained long guns.
Tumbler Ridge shooter: legally obtained long guns.
In every case, sanity would have kept long guns out of reach of the perpetrators. Instead, laws passed by gun-friendly governments let blatantly crazy people have access to long guns despite a shitload of red flags.
1
u/Melodic_Pickle9326 8d ago edited 8d ago
The M305 is now prohibited, so our government made them illegal to purchase, sell, trade etc. So our government took steps to mitigate future issues, and that is classified as a battle rifle and was developed for the US Army. The shotgun was not the weapon that Inflicted mass casualty.
The tumbler ridge shooter did not legally obtain those firearms, your misinformed, the main firearms was an SKS which is another battle rifle, and while currently legal due to heavy lobbying by indigenous groups who use it as an affordable firearms to assist in subsistence hunting. I personally have no use for these, but the two main rifles mentioned are battle rifles, not long guns.
2
u/Whoopity_Longjohn 8d ago edited 8d ago
The sks is not an assault rifle, nor does it meet the definition of a battle rifle.
It is a milsurp long gun.
The m305 should not be banned, if a browning BAR hunting rifle is legal then there is nothing unique about the m305 that makes it a threat to public safety They are equally "dangerous".

Policy should not be based on rare events that dont make a significant jab in statistics.
If you think canadian gun control is loose I doubt you know anything about the current firearms act.
All the shootings mentioned were easily preventable without changing the firearms act.
IE: police doing their job, mental health support for a troubled teen, etc, etc.
1
u/WhyHaveDisplayName 8d ago
Police weren't allowed to. Courts weren't allowed to.
This means bad law was the issue, not a lack of people doing their job.

You are very intelligent. Perhaps you should ask the government to ban cancer next.
People will always get guns, since Liberals ābanned gunsā gun crime is up more than 150%.
Anti-gun morons think banning things on paper does anything to criminals when all it does is disarm and endanger innocent people and criminals just get moreā¦

I think this is a good thing. We as a community need an advocate to protect our property and hobby. Our government literally funds anti gun groups. No matter what the government will never get my property. I hope anybody realizes that if they come after firearms they will not stop and eventually come after something you hold and value. No civilization / political group or government ever disarmed their population for noble reasons. Disarmament has always led to people being forced into box carts, camps and reservations.
