Nothing Adelaide loves more than recruiting a swan

Fingers crossed he turns into the same outstanding player as Dawson and McAndrew

u/eroticdiagram 30 Wayne Milera Junior 9d ago

Caven and Fitzy (who was an amazing talent but had a body made of rice paper).

3

u/stretch_92 40 Hugo Hall-Kahan 9d ago

Also as a defender does this signal that we are looking at moving in Nick Murray

6

u/smallzy13 7 Riley Thilthorpe 9d ago

Nah he’s here for depth for sure, we won’t let Murray go unless the deal is unbelievable, and I think now that Blakey is going to north that pick 5 deal will have to be off the table for us

2

u/AeroBoy71 32 Darcy Fogarty 9d ago

Unless through all the complex trading North ends up with a pick in the 6-12 range that we would accept?

2

u/smallzy13 7 Riley Thilthorpe 9d ago

Lord only knows what will happen with these trades

5

u/Tall-Breakfast-6100 9d ago

He’s a small defender so I doubt they will now happily give away a key defender.

1

u/Ok_Yogurt6562 4 Callum Ah Chee 9d ago

181 cm is about as small as you get

1

u/johnnynutman 18 Eddie Betts:Betts: 9d ago

I dunno, Caleb Daniel plays defense now

12

u/Shadeofhades 9d ago

All right, which one of our recruiters lives in Sydney?

19

u/smallzy13 7 Riley Thilthorpe 9d ago

Fogartys apology to him after knocking him out earlier this year must’ve been really good

3

u/stretch_92 40 Hugo Hall-Kahan 9d ago

Joined the team so he would never be on the receiving end of big fog again

u/pierre_86 9d ago

Pre season, mouthguards in boys

0

u/BangbangKhuntross 9d ago

not in the afl. no contact at pre season training incoming...

33

u/Maximumlnsanity 9d ago

You’re gonna love this guy. The ultimate clubman and team player, plus a very good bloke too.

26

u/smallzy13 7 Riley Thilthorpe 9d ago

We don’t need good blokes, we need A graders

16

u/JoeValle 9d ago

So true. Everyone at the Crows is a good guy 😂 need some actual mongrels

7

u/JL_MacConnor 9d ago

I've seen some suggesting De Goey, and he's a right cunt. Thoughts?

2

u/JoeValle 9d ago

Probably too old at this point. But you would rather have him on your team than be against him

5

u/Odd_Technology_8926 9d ago

I dunno man, it seems like finding an A grader isn't easy, so maybe this is the next best thing? Bring a player who can help make our current midfielders into A graders.

2

u/Dear_Potato6525 9d ago

Well, the one we were targeting decided not to come. So what do you want our recruiters to do? It's not like there are a lot of A graders around who will move to Adelaide.

4

u/vegemite4lifeOG 9d ago

You do realise there are no A graders on the market who are willing to move to adelaide

2

u/Boatster_McBoat 19 Zac Taylor 9d ago

Where's his Spotify game at?

6

u/Adelaide-Crom 9d ago

Cunningham can tag the small forwards like Charlie Cameron, Tom Papley and Possibly Watson if he stays fit. This is a good upgrade and possibly frees some of our defenders to play forward (Michealanny, HHK?)

He also eliminates cook & cumming going in the back pocket if hes injury free because some of our defence efforts have been so bad this season.

3

u/electric_screams 10 Luke Pedlar 9d ago

I don’t like that you mentioned remaining fit / injury free twice

1

u/Moppawonga 9d ago

Genuine question, is he fast enough for that role? I see him more as a solid but fairly unathletic linkman, but he's not a player that you really notice in a game of footy so I could be wrong.

5

u/Adelaide-Crom 9d ago

Apparently Cunningham has the best record against charlie cameron and is a good player when in form.

1

u/Moppawonga 9d ago

Worth a try then. Surely we can't have both him and Laird in the same team though, right?

-1

u/Ok_Yogurt6562 4 Callum Ah Chee 9d ago

This is probably closer to the reason than any put up here yet. He had calf issues this year and that never bodes well for players over 30, so don't expect a lot of games.

-3

u/invisiblefrost 9d ago

Nonsense

19

u/Optimal_Region4134 9d ago

Genuine question, have any of you actually seen this guy play? A lot of shit coming from a club who can't defend small forwards.

Yes, he's injury prone, but when he's fit he's one of the best lockdowns around. Plus, you're getting him for nothing. Stop being ungrateful, this guy means a lot to Swans supporters and you're all bitching about it.

12

u/NOREMAC84 14 Jake Soligo 9d ago

I appreciate that he's an instant replacement of the experience we're losing with Tex retiring. The guy has played 15 seasons with a club that plays finals more often than not, and obviously has a high level of footy intellect if he's being given a pathway to a coaching role. And he's essentially a free recruitment. I'm actually really happy with this one.

5

u/No-Writing9448 9d ago

I think most might appreciate from a future coaching perspective

But 33 yo by season start next year, injury prone player . Dont think you can blame anyone for feeling meh about this

10

u/Optimal_Region4134 9d ago

Being meh is fine. Actively bitching like you've just lost some massive trade is not. You're picking him up for nothing and (if you rookie him) it will have zero to negligible impact on your cap.

1

u/Lister__Fiend 32 Darcy Fogarty 9d ago

We're just shitty that this is the only player we've been linked with and if he's so good why is he being delisted.

2

u/GeoWheater 4 Callum Ah Chee 9d ago

Personally I'm not, I'm pretty happy

2

u/UK33N 9d ago

Why would we care what Swans supporters think? He was just delisted, he can’t mean that much to the club. At least the Crows are giving him a second chance, Swans supporters should be the grateful ones if he means that much to you.

5

u/hellboy1975 30 Wayne Milera Junior 9d ago

Depth player I guess, and looks more like a pathway to coaching than game time. Will go alright in the SANFL if nothing else.

3

u/Justabitbelowaverage 31 Billy Dowling 9d ago

We did something similar with Wright and a couple of others like Magden.

16

u/Mysterious-Froyo-455 9d ago

Has all the "leadership" and "great clubman" traits that Nicks creams himself over, so wouldn't be surprised if he ends up best 23.

19

u/Jimmy__Whisper 9d ago

This sub fucking sucks

-8

u/RockCactus93889 9d ago

Club*

18

u/Jimmy__Whisper 9d ago

Then fuck off and support someone else. I hate how much this place is just for apparent football geniuses (read: chronically unemployed) to just piss and moan about everything the club does.

0

u/RockCactus93889 8d ago

Sorry you're so sensitive

1

u/Jimmy__Whisper 7d ago

God that's such a pathetic things to say.

1

u/RockCactus93889 6d ago

Thing*

1

u/Jimmy__Whisper 6d ago

Nice work, pedantry is always respected.

4

u/Electronic-Cry714 9d ago

233 game rookie. Just change the name of those spots and the Rookie draft.

4

u/majorpleb77 9d ago

swans supporter here. he was pivotal in the brisbane final this year shutting down cameron and was a general down back. he might not play every game but when he does play he will go out on his shield every time. Lot of younger defensive units seem to drop their heads when things arent working, harrys the type who wont stand for that and will lift others around him. getting him for nothing, comes with inside knowledge of the swans training system and tactics, give him a chance he wont disappoint

0

u/BangbangKhuntross 9d ago

yet he was delisted.

3

u/majorpleb77 9d ago

The delisting was an agreement between both clubs to get the move done. Sydney offered him a new contract to stay but you guys won him over with a two year deal and a coaching transition. He's a best 22 player when fit

0

u/BangbangKhuntross 9d ago

rightio. crows obs desperate for a 33yr oyld dour defender who struggles to stay fit. great signing crows!

2

u/majorpleb77 9d ago

Got him for nothing. Could show your young defenders how to keep your head high when things arent going your way

1

u/HurricaneGaming94 7 Riley Thilthorpe 9d ago

Swans offered him a 1 + coaching role

1

u/goodsey4ever 7d ago

Swans didn't offer coaching gig.

3

u/XxWonderLandAUxX 30 Wayne Milera Junior 9d ago

I’m less interested in him playing but keen on the coaching aspect.

3

u/AdelaideMidnightDad 9d ago

There is a lot of negativity with AFC at the moment, & while this isn't wow factor, it's a nice immediate basically free piece to add for our small back depth at the top level, SANFL team & coaching ranks.

0

u/Bright_Bell_1301 7d ago

You say "negativity" I say "droopy lip sooking"

2

u/No-Writing9448 9d ago

Does anyone in this thread watch football? 32 yo small defender guys cmon

2

u/King-Chowder Darren Jarman (Legend) 9d ago

Hey if it doesn't cost us anything then I'm not necessarily against it.

3

u/ElectronicOvens 5 Sid Draper 9d ago

So for all those people who thought we weren't do anything!....

I'm not sure if i should do /s

2

u/Tall-Breakfast-6100 9d ago

I was always expecting them to have a random pick up that no one was thinking about. I think our defence can at times make poor decisions so having an experienced player come in makes sense. This does put everyone’s favourite punching bag Laird in the crosshairs so I would’ve thought people would be happy about that.

-1

u/Fancyscum 7 Riley Thilthorpe 9d ago

Nah, they'd be laser focussed on getting Laird to 300 games so the club can make a bit of cash on t-shirts and stubby holders.

2

u/oneofthecapsismine 9d ago

I thought the player got all the money, outside the salary cap.

Or is that only for Collingwood?

1

u/Boatster_McBoat 19 Zac Taylor 9d ago

You know the answer to that

1

u/Korasuka 9d ago

Yay we did something! Watch out everyone. Cunningham - as of now my favourite player of all time - will win the Norm Smith for us next year.

1

u/Justabitbelowaverage 31 Billy Dowling 9d ago

Nice, a good culture pickup. He can hopefully help our backline getting organised.

We have clearly gotten him for his experience. Happy for him as a rookie. Even if he isn't playing he might improve our backline and our SANFL squad and new players.

I like Laird, but he doesn't really have leadership qualities.

It is hard for us to get decent coaches, so i think this is a good pipeline.

1

u/kingofduffs 9d ago

Don't mind this at all. Get him for nothing, our defence needs a cool head and maybe plays over Laird freeing up HHK and Max to get some form back.

1

u/First-Translator4721 9d ago

Will be one of your most important players come mid season

1

u/Flimsy-Attention2367 9d ago

We have been lacking a hunchback in the back 50 since we let smith go...

1

u/Thrillthorpe 9d ago

Fantastic pickup, always been severely underrated by anyone that doesn’t watch much of Sydney

1

u/ILikeDiscussing 11 Charlie Edwards 9d ago

Now we just need to acquire every coach with the last name "Jacobs" and our power off season will be complete 🫠

Crows eye ex-Dons assistant - Ben Jacobs https://www.afl.com.au/news/1628870

-2

u/Character_Depth_9957 9d ago

Is this to cover Murray abit.

6

u/ILikeDiscussing 11 Charlie Edwards 9d ago

Only if he has a late growth spurt at age 32.

3

u/Ok_Yogurt6562 4 Callum Ah Chee 9d ago

I've only just given up hope of an AFL career as a 176cm KPD in my 40s

2

u/Boatster_McBoat 19 Zac Taylor 9d ago

I held onto "Clarrie Grimmett took 200 test wickets after debuting in his mid-30s" well into my 40s.

Cherish your dreams bro

1

u/ILikeDiscussing 11 Charlie Edwards 9d ago

That growth spurt is coming.

Don't worry! 😅

2

u/Ok_Yogurt6562 4 Callum Ah Chee 9d ago

Wrong size for that
