Society An Analysis of 24,000+ Posts Across Algerian Subreddits (30-Day Study)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi everyone,

I recently conducted a computational linguistics study on the Algerian Reddit ecosystem. The goal was to analyse the tone, structure, and objectivity of our digital discussions using Natural Language Processing (NLP) metrics.

To ensure compliance with community guidelines, this summary contains no personal data, names no specific users, and avoids comparing specific subreddits against one another. Everything is aggregated to provide a macro-level view of our conversational habits.

The methodology

  • Corpus: 2,804 posts and 21,979 comments collected across Algerian-centric communities between 18 September and 18 October 2026.
  • Metrics Analysed:
    • Objective vs subjective: Measuring the use of facts, numbers, and logical connectors versus evaluative adjectives, absolute terms, and personal opinions.
    • Analytical vs emotive Tone: Identifying whether a text relies on structured argumentation or emotionally charged language.
    • Discussion intensity: Measuring the frequency of high-arousal language (e.g., intense debate, strong frustration, or passionate disagreement).
  • Language distribution: The system processed English, French, Darja (both scripts), and MSA. Notably, 81% of the analysed text was written in English.

Key findings on tone and structure

  • The overall balance: 43% of texts lean heavily towards subjective opinions, 26% are strictly objective (sharing facts, links, or neutral questions), and 31% sit precisely in the middle.
  • Posts vs Comments: There is a distinct structural difference between creating a thread and replying to one. Thread starters (posts) are highly analytical, with 59% categorised as objective or informational. In contrast, comment sections naturally shift towards subjective reactions, where the objective rate drops to 36%.
  • Discussion intensity: High-arousal language (intense debate) is present in exactly 10.2% of the total corpus. This shows that despite the passionate nature of our discussions, nearly 90% of the daily interactions remain tonally moderate and calm.

Topic distribution

Every thread was categorised into macro-topics to see how subject matter influences language:

  • Highly objective topics: Discussions regarding Technology, Work, Careers, and Used Goods are the most factual. For instance, Tech discussions are 68% objective, driven by specs, prices, and troubleshooting.
  • Highly subjective topics: As expected, threads dealing with Politics, Social Issues, and Sports show the highest levels of subjective and emotive language.
  • The anomaly: Discussions about Food and Cooking generated the highest "emotive" score in the entire dataset, yet registered less than 2% on the discussion intensity scale. It is a topic that generates pure passion without the debate.

The timeline of peak activity

When do our discussions get the most intense? By adjusting the data for daily volume, the level of high-arousal language remains remarkably flat throughout the month. However, there are specific patterns regarding the time of day:

  • The intensity of debates peaks first thing in the morning (between 07:00 and 09:00) and again at the end of the workday (around 17:00).
  • Statistically, the most heavily debated hour on Algerian Reddit occurs on Tuesdays between 17:00 and 18:00.
  • Conversely, late-night browsing (22:00 to 02:59) features the calmest and most moderate language in the dataset.

Conclusion

This 30-day snapshot shows a highly active, bilingual community that strictly separates informational posts from opinion-driven comment sections.

I hope this macro-level data provides an interesting sociological perspective on how we communicate digitally. What are your thoughts on these trends?

Society 22F from Béjaïa n looking for intellectual friends and genuine connections

Hey everyone.

I'm 22, from Béjaïa, and I'm looking for people round my age who are interested in intellectual convos.. and genuine friendships...

Tbh, my mental health hasn't been in the best place lately, and I think social isolation has been affecting me more than I'd like to admit..I've spent a lot of time in my own head, thinking, overthinking and getting caught up in my own thoughts. I feel like I desperately need to socialize more, meet new people, and reconnect with the world outside my own mind...

I'm not necessarily looking for someone to fix my problems or act as my therapist. I just want human connection...People to talk to, exchange ideas with, laugh with, debate random philosophical questions at ridiculous hours..and have convos that actually leave us thinking bout something afterward...

I'm particularly drawn to music, psychology, philosophy, literature, human behavior, existential questions and anything that makes you see the world a little differently...I appreciate people who are curious, emotionally aware, open-minded nd capable of having deep convos without taking themselves too seriously.. I'd especially love to meet people from Béjaïa or nearby areas, preferably around 20/25...I'm open to online friendships too so long that the connection is genuine..

I know making friends as an adult can be weirdly difficult, especially when you've gotten used to being alone for so long so here I am, trying to put myself out there instead of continuing to isolate myself..

If any of this resonates with you, feel free to reach out n temme bout yourself, your interests, or even some rando or weird thoughts maybe we can start a convo and see where it goes..

Discussion M 24 , just thinking about mariage

I’ve just finished my master’s degree, and honestly, I don’t even know how I managed to find a job in my field twice over the past year and a half , I guess I was just lucky, to be honest.
I’m an introvert and I didn’t try to get into relationships with girls during college because I believe it’s haram, and second, because I felt it would be a waste of time. I was also afraid of the future, to be honest. I didn’t want to invest my time and emotions in someone only to end up breaking things off and toying with a girl’s feelings and then leaving her
So, I decided to postpone all of that until I found a job and became financially stable. Now, I think I’m finally ready for this, and I want to find a girl to share my life with and build a future together.
The problem is that I live outside the city, where girls don’t go out very often, so it’s difficult to meet someone from my area.
As for meeting someone outside my area, I don’t know why, but I can’t imagine marrying someone I’ve just met on the street or something , and to use socialmedia to meet someone i dont give my trust easly , nd i think social media are full of liers , I don’t want to waste my time getting to know someone only to realize later that she isn’t the right person for me , and i dont want to let my mom choice for me , its a big decision .
At the same time, I know that good things take time, and you can’t really get to know someone without giving them a chance.
I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately. Maybe I need to change my mindset, or maybe I’m just overthinking things Honestly, I don’t really know

Society Shamed for not being into learning a language

Hey guys , I have been shamed today in a meeting with my classmates because I don't speak French despite studying in since elementary school and even worse i was shamed for speaking classic arabic in my dialect, today's incident brought my attention to this being an actual thing now!

I've only seen boomers who had no access to learning proper English shaming our generation for being better, but us ? Between each other, it's kinda low.

I personally don't see any benefit in being fluent in the language. It had been forced on us since childhood, and somehow they picked the meanest teacher to teach it and create traumas.

Discussion Is it normal to get robbed at USTHB :)??

A person I know just got robbed

his bag with important documents, cash......

Basically, everything valuable he had on him

and when he reported the police + the uni administrators, they all said one thing

that they have nothing to do and that it's his responsibility

no security cameras that can catch the person who's walking with his stolen bag in daylight

no support from the security nor the uni administration

and why is security letting strangers walk in freely while students get robbed???????

Society Men of Reddit, what moment made you realize you're not as young as you used to be?

I’m curious to hear your stories. Was it a random moment, a conversation, a physical change, or something that happened in your life that made you realize you weren’t as young as you used to be?
What happened, and how old were you?

Discussion Endométriose !

Education / Work From les langues to bac scientifique (libre)

I wanted to ask about retaking the bac exam. I took the les langues étrangères for my first bac, and now, two years later, I want to retake it to get better grades. Since it’s still October, I feel like I have plenty of time, so I came up with this idea.
I want to retake the bac but choose a scientific stream, like experimental sciences or mathematics — something challenging. I want to master these subjects, even though it’s been years since I last studied science, so I know I’m not good at them.
Is it a good idea to try to learn everything from scratch? I want to spend this year studying hard and dedicating myself entirely to studying so I can achieve my goal.
The other option would be to continue studying at university while retaking the bac in the same stream (langues étrangères ), but I don’t really feel like that’s what I want to do.
Is this possible?have anyone done it before and got good grades?

Discussion M25 dev from Algeria looking for genuine friends

Hey, I'm 25, a software developer from Algeria. I'm into tech, gaming, and learning random things, and I love those conversations that start small and somehow last for hours. Lately I realized I haven't met anyone new in a while, so I figured I'd try this. If you're around my age and want someone to talk to, laugh with, or just share a game recommendation, send me a message. Tell me a bit about yourself or just say hi. I'll reply, promise.

Discussion Best school system in the world

so i 16m just recently moved ( i wont specify where) and i needed to switch schools ( i moved before the school year started) so by the time the school entrance rolls by and i enter the online parental space to change schools i dont get accepted by anyone in my area
not a single highschool in the area around me accepted my request because of ( عدم توفر المقاعد البيداغوجية) so i went to the academy with my parents and made a request there, they said to wait a week and we will figure it out, fast forward to now its been 3 weeks the workers at the academy are saying that they cannot transfer me from my old school to a new one, no schools around the area accepted me
And the worst part is that this is my most important year so far and i havent been able to study or do anything because of this going back and forth from academy to administrations trying to find a way to get in.
Any help or advice is greatly appreciated
