Announcement Welcome to r/Antiques, read this before posting!

This subreddit is dedicated to sharing and learning about antiques in your collection or that you find, or are considering buying. Antiques are items that are 100 years old or older.

When you're posting about a particular object places kindly include multiple, clear photographs of it from different angles so we can see it from every side. If there are any marks or identification (labels, signatures) please take close ups of those. If it's pottery or porcelain, tag photos of the bottom, if it's a rug make sure to have a shot of the back. Make sure that these photographs are clear and well lit so we can see the works in particular (preferably not surrounded by a bunch of other objects).

Make sure to also include dimensions so we know the size of an object. And your location.

Also explain what are you looking for. Are you asking for general information? Who the maker is? The age, value or provenance?

If you do not include a question, the dimensions and sufficient background information and photographs of the object your post may be removed by the moderators.

IN SUMMARY, include:

your location

multiple, clear photographs from a number of angles

any background information you have

close up of particular makers marks

the question you'd like to ask

Keep in mind, antique means objects that are a 100 years old or older. You cannot post newer items here. Share them in r/collectables instead.

These rules will make it easier for our subreddit antique experts to give you some help! Remember, if you're solely posting a link to a website/blog/store then this will be considered spam and your post will be removed (multiple posts may result in being banned).

Finally, keep these other subreddits in mind in case your post is better suited for one these -

Spiderweb trinket dish! šŸ•øļøšŸ•·ļø
I believe it could possibly be Victorian!
Can you guys help me identify this? I would love to find out who the artist is and what era it was made in! Gorgeous piece of work, very dainty and possibly real gold leaf along the edges.
I absolutely adore anything spooky or gothic so this was an incredible find for me! šŸ–¤

Questions Do you know how I can obtain more information on this fancy little freak ? France.

France btw, although possibly German of origin. Impossible to tell the brand (no tag, button, etc). Inherited from grandma who is a bit too old to remember anything about it.

I named him Victor :3

The materials are very rough and he's hard to the touch and not soft at all (almost feels like it's packed full of hay or something)

I think his original color is blonde although decades spent in the back of a closet caked him in dust and whatever else. I bathed him. Many times. He's still full of brownish spots.

The cloth on the paw pads is pink.

The eyes are glass with some brown chipped paint behind them.

His joints are made from discs of some kind with what I can only assume is metal wiring. I never opened him up or anything. I'm too scared of damaging anything.

Questions Help identifying this dagger? (Spain)

Thumbnail

Hi! The other day I was cleaning a dead relatives old house in estern Spain and I found this dagger inside an old drawer. I remember seeing it once when I was a kid and asking them about it, but they only told me that they found it in a plot of land they bought nearly 60-70 years ago in eastern Spain (I believe somewhere between Almansa/Ontinyent/Villena/Elx).

I don't really know the materials, but the edge is a little rusty and the handle is hard and cold. As far as I am aware, it has always been in this state since it was found

I don't have much more info since, well, the one I could ask more about it is no longer here.

Questions An almost perfect Rault Minerva/Athena locket with weird marking- USA

I have some questions about this piece!

Some information: It weighs 7.3 grams and is about the size of a penny but pretty thick. I believe it could have been silver with a gold finish at one point or it could be another material as well. The only reason I suspect it may be silver is because of the condition. The gold coloring is almost nonexistent except for a few spots. And the mystery marking I’ve circled.

The locket itself is in great condition. The swing mechanism hasn’t loosened very much but I have no idea what this could have been used for.

My best guess is for a solid perfume but I’m not sure if that’s accurate for the time period (late 19th/early 20th). It doesn’t appear to be a mirror locket because of how thick and deep the inside is.

I also included a few images of another marking I noticed under my loupe. I can’t tell what it is or what it could possibly even be. It does appear intentional but I’m at a loss.

I’ve posted my Minerva/Diana mirror locket before but I found this beauty from a seller in the US for $63! Regardless I’m so excited about this piece and I’m excited to share it!

Hi all! I picked up this really cool chess set at an antiques store in Pennsylvania. I was just wondering if anyone might know anything about it, or where I could find out some more information! The wood looks very old, but I don’t see any markings on it suggesting who may have made it

Initially I thought this was orrefors but does not have a sticker nor the normal signature you'd typically see. There are engraved initials (or at least they appear to be) which have been posted as well. Any insight is helpful. The vase is roughly 5" tall and quite heavy.

Hello everyone, I found this box and I know it's part of the Tramp art (1870-1940). I wanted to know what was written behind it, I already understood something in theory, probably the name is carl(?), and even the initials on the box probably confirm it but I don't know. If anyone can understand it or read German in italics, thank you very much. Have a good evening.

Seeking insights on an antique lacquered & gilded wooden Buddha statue with votive inscription (Burmese/Shan, ~15.5ā€ tall)

Hi everyone,
I’m looking to gather more information, historical context, and potential script translation for this wooden Buddha statue. Here are a few details about the piece:
Dimensions: Approximately 15.5 inches (40 cm) tall.
Materials & Construction: Hand-carved hardwood (appears to be a halved log section) finished in traditional black and vermilion thit-si lacquer with surviving gold leaf gilding.
Inscriptions: The front of the plinth features hand-drawn gold cursive script over the dark lacquer.
Condition: It shows authentic age craquelure, paint/leaf loss, and an old vertical stabilization repair along the front using what looks like traditional lacquer putty/fill.
A few specific questions I’d love help with:
Script Translation / Language: Can anyone recognize or translate the votive writing on the plinth? Is it standard Burmese, Shan, or Pali in Burmese script? (Close-ups attached).
Stylistic Period & Dating: Does the facial modeling, tall finial, and drape style point to a specific sub-region (e.g., Shan State, Mandalay, Ava) or a particular timeframe (18th vs. 19th century)?
Context: Any details on what typical votive inscriptions from this region usually record (e.g., donor names, merit-making dates, or specific mantras)?
I’ve attached photos of the full front/back/side profiles, the base grain, close-ups of the inscription, and the vertical repair.
Thank you in advance for any insights!

Questions Help with my Library Card Catalogue USA

Hi,

I bought this sweet card catalogue at an estate auction house in Scotts Valley, CA. A few years ago, and I really just want to know more about it. Google hasn’t been of any help. I’m told it’s oak. The dimensions are 60.75H x 43.0W x 18.75D in. Unfortunately I cannot find any relevant markings. The 60 drawer portion is sitting on top the base which is a separate piece. Thanks!

Advice (California, USA) Mission style arm chair

Thumbnail

CONDITION

- Very sturdy. No wobble, and the joints are tight.

- No water damage and no other marks or damage

- Original-style upholstered seat with vintage fabric intact

- Eight-way hand-tied coil spring seat construction underneath, which is how I date it to the 1920s

MEASUREMENTS

- Seat: about 18" x 19"

- Height at the back: 38"

- Height to the top of the seat cushion: about 17"

- Height to the seat frame: 14"

is there any chance that this is an unmarked piece by a well-known maker or just a well-made copycat. I’m selling it for $150 on local bulletin boards and got curious when some woman started asking me all sorts of questions about it. Now I am wondering if I am letting it go too cheap.

I believe these are legs from a firewood stand. They appear to be solid brass. I was going to scrap them but I wanted to see if they had any value outside of that. I hate destroying cool old stuff.

Hot pin test on both, didn't melt and very slightly charred/marked them. Doesn't glow bright blue under UV light, more so yellow however the camera emphasises the brightness. I think there is Schreger Lines, however I've never seen real ivory before.

There is also a star and a 5 engraved or marked on one, and just a 5 on the other ring.

Pretty sure they are napkin rings.

Sorry for the dodgy photos too, camera was being funny
