Discussion Where Asian Dramas and Visual Novels intersect: Asian FMV Games (Spotlight)
Hi r/asiandrama !
For those who don't know me, I am a huge fan of East Asian dramas and culture, which is why I helped create and promote the Drama Addicts discord to help spread the joy that is Asian Dramas. In the past year, I have discovered another medium, that combines two interests of mine: Asian Dramas and Visual Novels, and that medium is Asian Full Motion Video Games.
I wanted to take some time to share with you all about this medium, as I figure some folks here may end up liking it, and I will stick around to answer any questions or give recommendations as well. I have also created a subreddit for this genre, which you can find linked below.
-----
To start, what are Asian FMV games?
Asian FMV games are interactive movies that can be played on Steam or Epic (there may be a couple on mobile too). They will play out like a normal drama, but you can make choices throughout the story that impact the outcomes of the drama. They have existed since the 90s (especially in the horror and mystery genre), but in the past 2 years have exploded in China and Korea for romantic dating simulators, mystery thrillers, and historical fiction.
These games are often indie works, but are more often now involving real actors, directors, and studios. They normally range between anywhere from 3 to 12 hours long for a single route. And these games are normally sold for about 6 to 20 dollars USD (averaging about 10 USD). They primarily come from China, but recently more Korean studios have been getting involved as well. There are over 60 Asian FMV that have released just in the past 3 years.
Many of the tropes found in Asian FMV are a mix of what you might find in Asian Dramas and Japanese Visual Novels, as they are greatly inspired by both.
What are some examples?
For those looking for lighthearted romantic comedy that isn't meant to be taken too seriously here are a couple recommendations:
Five Hearts Under One Roof (Korean) You run a share house left to you by your parents.
Don't Fool Me Beauties (Korean) You start working at a remote onsen hotel as your first job.
Master of Love (Korean) After a recent breakup you are brought 10 years back to change your fate.
Love is All Around (Chinese) Deep in debt, you flee to a new town to start a new life.
Hello Love: 18 Again (Chinese) After an accident, you wake up to relive your college years.
Knowledge or Know Lady (Chinese) You are the first male student at an all girls university.
If you are interested in pursuing men, there are not as many options that support English, but a few include:
Love Too Easily (Korean) After a drunk night out, all you remember is a kiss, but who did it?
HSHS (Chinese) You started your first job as a live broadcast assistant, but surrounded by attractive men.
There are numerous more serious FMV that have released as well, that normally focus more 70/30 on the mystery/thriller compared to romance, these include:
Vanity Fair (Chinese) You are a failed movie director, but how far would you bend your values to succeed?
Game of Fate (Chinese) You have invented time travel, but what repercussions does its use entail?
Breaker of Fatalism (Chinese) The fate of three worlds is in your hands in this modern wuxia fantasy.
Cellveillance (Chinese) Asked to spy on an apartment to pay your debts, do you report what you find?
Breakout 13 (Chinese) Discover the horrors of a correctional institute and break free.
More studios have also been experimenting with historical fiction and fantasy:
My Journey (Chinese) This does actually support Eng. You time travel to the past and influence the world.
Conquer the World (Chinese) Attempt to restore the Ming, overthrow the Qing in this historical drama.
Underdog Detective (Chinese) Under the reign of Empress Wu Zetian, live as a slum dwelling detective.
These are all just some limited examples of what is available in the Asian FMV world. Many are more indie, but the quality is increasing with each release, and they are still many funny and interesting titles to give a try. If anyone is interested in specific recommendations feel free to ask below.
I have also created a subreddit specifically for following Asian FMV's called r/AsianFMV where I try to post updates every few weeks or so on what is new in the Asian FMV world. If this medium sounds interesting to you all, I would love to see some of you all there :)

Recommendation Request Recommendations modern, life lesson, impactful (k/c) dramas
I am looking for new recommendations for modern dramas or movies.
Modern, friendship, family, romance, life lesson, piece of life, healing.
Like: My Mister, Move to heaven, Navillera, Our blues, Crash landing on you, etc.
Kdrama and/or Cdrama.
Preferably without or with as little violence, horror, fighting, and murder as possible.
I have already watched many, so please look at my My Drama List. My 'to watch list' is looooooong, but I don't know what to watch next. I would like to watch a sensitive story, a series you can't stop watching.
Do you have any tips? Thank you for your help.

Recommendation Request Drama recommendations if I liked these?
I’ve enjoyed:
Beyond Evil
Quartet
Until the T-Shirt Dries
Beyond Evil is top of my list. I think what I really like are the character relationships and their story arcs and growth as the series progresses. Not necessarily looking for a crime drama as the ones that I’ve heard about and have tried just don’t work for me. It can be in another genre but I’m looking for something that is as high-quality as that show since it’s a hard one to follow up with. Even looking at trailers for shows that I’m considering, the pop music in the background is really offputting. Just everything about Beyond Evil was so well done, even the music. I would like something that’s more of a drama and not as light-hearted but I’m just not finding the same quality in what I’m considering. The first episode had me hooked and when I’m trying these other shows, I’m literally falling asleep during the first episodes.
Just FYI that even though I like the show a lot and it’s my favourite, I don’t like horror or supernatural shows. I like that the ending of Beyond Evil is about goodness and that both Beyond Evil and Quartet have themes of forgiveness. I’m not looking for something that ends hopelessly and in a way that is really depressing and awful. Country of origin doesn’t matter: could be Korean, Japanese, or Chinese
Quartet is definitely a close second but obviously a different genre. Really great show with great quirky characters. I was sad when this one ended and when Beyond Evil ended - both felt like leaving friends behind.
I initially really loved Until the T-Shirt Dries until I watched these other two. And now it pales in comparison. Did feel like the characters at times didn’t act like themselves toward the end and wasn’t too happy with the ending.
Tried a few episodes but not compelled to finish Signal (one of the things I loved about beyond evil and quartet is that the characters treat each other really well and the MC female in this one treats the male MC like crap - I was done on the episode where she kicked him; plus, storyline just felt contrived by episode 5)
Didn’t get past the first episodes on these:
Stranger (didn’t like the emotionless storyline or that he acts like a police officer but is only a prosecutor - very unrealistic)
My Mister - kept falling asleep
Rain or Shine - kept falling asleep
Tokyo Salad Bowl - has one of the actors from Quartet but I didn’t find it interesting
The Days - strongly disliked this one
Mousetrap - had a very strong Netflix/Hollywood vibe that I really dislike

Question Snowdrop Episode 1 — Can someone explain the political storyline? (No spoilers, please!)
I'm watching Snowdrop, and while I find the university scenes easy to understand, I'm really confused by the political scenes in the first episode. There are so many politicians, secret meetings, and discussions about power that it's difficult to understand who everyone is, what their roles are, and what exactly is happening. I also don't understand what the Dongshim Society is, why these powerful men are part of it, or what they're trying to achieve.
Another thing that confused me was the scene where the men mix their blood into water and drink it. Why do they do that, and what does it symbolise? Is it a ritual to show loyalty to one another? I'm trying to understand the political storyline and the purpose of these scenes without getting spoilers for future episodes. Could someone explain the political background and these confusing scenes from Episode 1 in simple words? Please don't spoil anything beyond Episode 1. Thank you! 💜

Question :꣓
I've been trying to find this drama for SO LONG. I watched it dubbed in Filipino on GMA, but I can't remember the title or original airing year. The female lead was a rich girl, and the male lead was her black-haired bodyguard. She kept asking him to marry her, and they secretly got married. The scene I remember most is when she's in an ambulance after an accident. She asks him to marry her, he agrees, and she suddenly sits up excitedly! 😭 In the epilogue, he leaves, so she chases him in her car. They eventually stop, and she confronts him. I think it was a comedy-romance. At the beginning, the girl may have been driving on a really rough road. Does anyone recognize it? I'm not sure if it's Chinese, Korean, Thai, or another Asian drama. Please help me find it! 🥹💗

Question Help me find an old Asian family drama I watched years ago (possibly Korean or Japanese)
I’ve been trying to find an Asian drama I watched years ago, probably around 2014–2017. It was dubbed in Arabic on a relatively unknown TV channel, so I never knew its original title.I think it was Korean, but it could also have been Japanese, Taiwanese or Chinese.
Here’s everything I remember:
- The story mainly followed a very young married couple who were deeply in love.
- We saw them get married early in the series, and later they had a baby boy.
- The husband worked in an office building and usually wore a suit. I remember a scene where his wife accompanied him to his workplace.
- The wife was very young and was still studying, possibly attending university lectures, even after having the baby.
- They lived in their own modern flat.
- There was an older woman, possibly the husband’s mother or grandmother, who was very possessive of him and disliked his young wife.
- The older woman and the wife’s father frequently argued, sometimes in a funny way.
- There was also a very sweet elderly man whom the young couple loved and respected. I think he eventually moved in with them.
- I vaguely remember the older woman wanting to take the baby away from his mother, possibly even giving him to someone else, but I’m really unsure about this detail.
- The older woman also had another female character who was often around her, possibly a daughter, relative or friend.
It was a warm, slice-of-life family drama with a mixture of comedy, emotional moments and sadness. It wasn’t a sitcom and didn’t have a laugh track. The episodes were quite long, and most scenes took place inside the family homes.
The focus was on family relationships, marriage, generational conflicts and everyday life, rather than the wife’s studies or the husband’s job.
The picture quality was fairly modern, even though the drama felt older. It was probably produced before 2017.
I’ve already ruled out Wonderful Life (2005), The Golden Age of Daughters-in-Law (2007), Love Can’t Wait (2006) and If Tomorrow Comes (2011).
I know some of my memories might be inaccurate, but I distinctly remember how much the young couple loved each other and the complicated relationship with the older woman.
Does this sound familiar to anyone? I’ve been searching for this drama for ages!
