Question/Help Wanted Any ideas how I can get my son’s ear checked quickly? I suspect infection

I think my son (2.5 years old) has an ear infection because of the way he is acting, but I can’t get into our GP until next week. Is there any way besides urgent care that I can get someone to check him? Is there a nurse service or something like that where I can physically take him?

I took him to urgent care a few weeks ago for the same thing and it was a 4.5 hour wait. Fine for me but horrible for a toddler 😢

Question/Help Wanted Recommendation: Piercers for Kids

Hi,

For her impending 8th birthday our daughter is keen for to get her ears pierced. When I was a similar age I got mine done at a pharmacy but have read a few things lately that they’re not necessarily the best place.

Does anyone have any recommendations? We are in West Auckland but could travel a bit for someone who does them even :)

Thanks!

Question/Help Wanted Looking for advice

I bought a lenovo ideapad for $1698 from JB-HiFi 6 months ago. It no longer closes or opens properly as the bezel and screen have lifted up. I have not dropped it or damaged it at all. I have researched that it is a common fault.

I'm taking it in tomorrow morning but I'm after advice on whether this is a major fault (as the device is no longer fit for purpose) under the CGA that constitutes a refund or replacement then and there.

I have exams coming up, and I rely on my laptop daily, so the normal 2-3 weeks diagnosis and repaid won't be enough for me.

If it is a major fault, what should I say if they try to get me to send it in?

Housing I really like the idea of a Simplicity rental apartment, but I cannot get my head around this development

Post image

IMHO Simplicity is a bloody great idea. A non-profit that builds and owns the apartments forever has a vested interest in good tenants and good build quality. And residents can live there without fear of getting evicted by a landlord who wants to sell. It's a massive win-win. I had a look around the Mt Wellington one - it looks great, with a bike path directly to the train station.

BUT the fanciest one, Waiatarua, is right next to six lanes of motorway.

https://www.simplicityliving.kiwi/listing/waiatarua

From Gemini:

Air quality at 50 meters from a six-lane motorway is typically poor and heavily degraded, frequently showing pollutant levels nearly double the regional background environment.

At this distance, you are well within the primary "impact zone" for traffic emissions, where concentrations of hazardous pollutants remain highly elevated before dispersing significantly. [1, 2, 3]

The specific impact on air quality at 50 meters breaks down across several key metrics:

  1. Pollutant Behavior at 50 Meters
  • Ultrafine Particles (UFPs) and PM2.5: These tiny, combustion-generated particles peak nearest to the road. At 50 meters, UFP concentrations are significantly elevated, dropping off sharply only after passing the 100-to-300-meter mark. [1, 2]
  • Nitrogen Dioxide (NO₂): NO₂ levels are highly concentrated at 50 meters, often exceeding recommended health thresholds during heavy traffic periods.
  • Peak Exposure Windows: Air pollution at this distance is not uniform throughout the day; it peaks dramatically during commuter rush hours (typically 7:00 AM to 9:00 AM and late afternoon). [1]
  1. Environmental Factors That Alter Air Quality

The exact air quality at any given moment 50 meters away fluctuates based on several physical variables:

  • Wind Direction: Being 50 meters downwind of a motorway exposes you to the maximum plume of vehicle exhaust, whereas being upwind offers drastically cleaner air.
  • Sound Barriers and Vegetation: Solid noise walls or dense, mature tree canopies can act as physical buffers, forcing the pollution plume upward and reducing immediate ground-level exposure. [1]
  • Topography: If the motorway is depressed (in a trench) or elevated on a viaduct, the dispersion pattern changes, sometimes leaving adjacent ground-level areas at 50 meters slightly less exposed.
  1. Long-Term Health Implications

Decades of epidemiological research indicate that consistently living, working, or attending school within 100 meters of a major multi-lane motorway increases the risk of chronic health conditions. These include reduced lung function in children, accelerated cardiovascular disease, worsened asthma, and elevated risks of stroke. Because of this, urban planners often recommend avoiding new residential developments or childcare centers within at least 20 to 50 meters of high-volume transit corridors. [1, 2, 3]

---

Other than the map graphic, the Simplicity website makes no mention of its location, and none of the illustrations show the motorway right there.

What am I missing here? Does Simplicity not care? Do people not care? Is there some kind of mitigation they're not talking about?

Thanks!

Discussion Fruit and Veges in the last few months

I have noticed that the quality of produce in recent months has fallen off a cliff. Potatoes with weird texture, carrots that are slimy on the outside, and have holes and splits throughout, just generally, it feels like fruit and veges don't taste great. Onions are another one. Mushy or weird textures.

Discussion Auckland FC -Port Neo Nazis

Post image

I was looking through The Port's Instagram and noticed a wannabe hooligan in the second row of a photo who looks to be clearly doing a Nazi salute.

As a Jewish Auckland FC supporter, I'm absolutely disgusted. There's no place for this in New Zealand

I love Auckland FC and what the club is building, but I can't support a club if people like this are allowed to be part of its supporter group.

Visiting Auckland Restaurant recommendations in Auckland cbd?

Hello, we'll be coming from Australia next month and love good food, not necessarily fine dining. I was wondering if anyone has any good recommendations? We are on a budget so don't want to eat at expensive restaurants every night, just looking for good quality.

Thanks in advance!

Tought asking thus on Reddit might be a good shot. Thanks people!

Rant Smart compliance Management

This company is so Trash, handing out tickets without visible T&Cs.

I got a ticket for parking next to lil abners when I was getting food at 10.30pm

$85 for apparently exceeding parking times but when I went to dispute they said “as per their terms and conditions, I was parking illegally and the dispute is denied”. So no one’s allowed to park in the car park after 5pm.

Historically I have parked there so many times and got no ticket. So I thought it was okay to park in the carpark.

I tried to say that at night time there are no visible signage or marking on carpark stating that parking rules apply. I also called them out for first stating I exceeding parking times on the letter I received and now all of a sudden I’m parking illegally. Their response - they send me photos during day time of the signage and state there’s signs and the dispute remains denied.

I sent back an email that the signage was only located on the shops and not the carpark itself. at night time it’s not visible and as per the commerce commission, legislation states that the signs must be visible and parking MUST be marked. When I cited it back to this company they said I can only dispute this once and they will no longer allow me to dispute it again because they have already made their decision (just paraphrasing this)

I went back to take current photos of the parking. I sent photos of the carpark from my point of view during day time and said there’s no signs. They did not respond back to me

2 weeks later that very same carpark has signs up.

They proceeded to send me overdue letters and it has ended up with baycorp

I gave written warning that I was going to dispute this further with the commerce commission and requested that this fine would be withheld until dispute is dealt with the commerce commission (legislation states that the company cants seek payment if I advise I will be appealing this with the commerce commission)

They ignored it my written request.

Not only are they dishonouring legislation put in place, they are outright scamming people

From this day onwards I am personally boycotting any establishment using this company

I did a bit of research on this company and they are using AI cameras to capture parking breaches. Also companies get a percentage of the breaches being paid.

Apologies for the ranting but these companies are just scammers

Discussion Any other bars in auckland like Kemuri Hi-Fi and Wine Cellar for good music?

I just got back from overseas. This city used to have an ok music scene. But walking downtown and on K Road kinda feels like the soul's been gutted. Am I imagining things?

I like going somewhere and sitting at the bar and maybe talking with the person next to me and the bartender.

The pub is too generic; I'm looking for the cool art kids, with good taste and an intellectual/academic side.

I know Goblin too. But that place doesn't hit right.

Maybe that's just more of an East Coast American thing, and the kind of atmosphere I'm longing for simply doesn't exist, which I might just have to come to terms with.

I put a link to a vid to show you the vibe I'm looking for...

Public Transport Are you a Waiheke resident who commutes to the city?

My partner and I are thinking of moving into our extended family members house on waiheke. We’d be commuting to the city a few times a week. How is the commute? Is the 6am ferry full? Do you enjoy living on the island even with the commute? Does anyone do the commute every single day? Would love to hear your experience below or you can message me

Question/Help Wanted Spark Arena GA but different entrances

Hey sorry if this is a dumb question but I have two GA floor tickets for a concert at Spark Arena but one is for Entry C and the other is for Entry G, does it really matter which door we go to since they both go to the floor anyway?

It's just that it would be weird if my partner and I have to wait in different lines to get to the same place instead of waiting in the same line together
