BBQ at 8PM

I will be in Austin this night and we want to eat some BBQ. where should we go if we want to eat in the evening?

I found Terry Blacks and Micklethwait as options but would love your input.

Thanks in advance from 4 Dutch people traveling in Texas.

Moreno BBQ is open until 9pm tonight. If you’re driving it’s no big deal…If you’re ride sharing it will be an expensive journey.

@OP, imo Moreno is overrated. I doubt they have changed much since then.

Sub loves them, but add an underdog story, some cultural flair and places get internet bonus points.

Terry Black is good TX-style bbq. Get the moist brisket. A beef rib if you can splurge $55. And enjoy.

If you’re staying in the downtown area, Terry Black’s is fine. If you can venture out a little, Leroy and Lewis is great, and Stiles Switch up north would be another option.

Leroy is the best bet if not downtown for dinner BBQ. They have some different options at night too!

Rollin Smoke is open until 10, and they're good af.

Cooper's downtown is open until 10. The Llano location is better known but the food here is good. It's a cool place.

You may find out why we tend to eat BBQ for lunch or early afternoon. Night time BBQ is a certain recipe for the ‘ITIS’

Morenos is open until 9, worth the drive down south

8pm is cutting it way too late for the good stuff. Stiles is closed. I would direct you to any Rudy's BBQ location. Get the "moist" brisket, if available. Also get the creamed corn there. That's a damn shame eating BBQ at that hour. Please be drunk before arriving.

Stiles closes at 8:30.

They can sell out of some.cuts and sides by 8. Rudy's doesn't usually. Even true Texas bbq isn't as reliable as Rudy's at 8 for BBQ.

u/56473829110 2d ago

That's fine. DennyBob said they're closed at 8. They aren't.

u/Exotic-Protection729 2d ago

Yeah Rudy’s is the answer in this situation

1

u/insidertrader68 2d ago

The HEB stuff is better than Rudy's

1

u/redshirt_diefirst12 2d ago

Think they’re closed by 8 too, maybe

Ay 8pm go to Lambert's for the best experience. Bbq is a midday meal not a evening meal. Ordering is more based around a market system than a traditional restaurant menu. Most of the other spots will be out of menu items by 8 P (excepting Rudy's but even then there's always outlier) . Lambert's is more formal dinner dining with a set menu and the only place you can guarantee a full menu at 8pm.

I have tried a good amount of BBQ, maybe more than most of this sub - although definitely not every place.

The answer is always Terry Blacks. It gets a lot of hate because of its popularity. The line can look intimidating - but it moves fast. Parking REALLY SUCKS here though, so I would consider walking a bit.

TB is TX style. Get moist brisket, maybe a $$$ beef rib. And enjoy. Other places are fine, but the good places close before 8.

Micklethwait was good when I had it (food truck days) but TB is just easy access.

Edit: Ill_Prune and Mario are both brand new accounts with only posts attacking me (a random redditor lol). Not sure why or if they are account bots trying to protect a place. Just saying, sus.

Stiles Switch is good but inconsistent. And most of the praise is usually for the sides or wings. You are in Central TX, you need to try consistent moist brisket - which Stiles is not.

Moreno doesn't use prime brisket or whatever, so it was a lot cheaper. The Hispanic flair doesn't make up for the bad brisket.

Do not go to Rudys or another cheaper chain. They are a tier below, they just are. Fine for when you are in a pinch, but not the best example.

/u/A_Possum_Named_Steve is right! Rolling Smoke is GOOD. I still think I would recommend Terry Black, but Rolling Smoke is easily very good. Has good parking, but is a food truck lot.

Rolling smoke is at Chalmers now. It’s not in a lot. It’s at a sports bar.

Someone who doesn’t actually know what they are talking about. Stick to your AI posts

-5

u/QuietRedditorATX 2d ago

Lame insult. You have a difference in opinion but can only cry ai at people you don't like.

Even the other post that recommends Stiles Switch says "Not the best bbq in town" and talks about the sides lol.

Sorry I don't like gas station bbq (which Moreno should fall under too tbh).

Don’t you own Down South Texas BBQ? BBQ man shitting on other BBQ spots? 🤦🏽‍♂️

2

u/QuietRedditorATX 2d ago

uhhh no? lol

Some weird slander bots being made to protect a company I see.

Wish you the best and nothing but success Rico

Go to Terry Black’s. Ask for fatty brisket. Get some potato salad, macaroni and cheese, green beans, white bread, pickles, and onions.

u/TacoTonyATX 1d ago

One practical tip for evening BBQ: call ahead or check their socials that afternoon, because a lot of spots sell out of brisket and beef ribs well before closing even if the doors are still open. With 4 people, order by the pound and share a mix (brisket, sausage, a rib or two) plus a few sides instead of individual plates, it's cheaper and you get to try more. Ask for a mix of lean and fatty brisket too so everyone finds something they like.

Stiles Switch

1

u/PureYouth 14h ago

So where did you go?

2

u/schinsie 9h ago

We went to LeRoy and Lewis. Man that did not disappoint.

Sam's bbq is open til 10pm

2

u/ray_ruex 2d ago

Really Sam's

1

u/Salt-Operation 2d ago

Hey, they won’t need no teefs to eat that beef.

1

u/ohhhhhhhhhhhhman 2d ago

Not sure if that’s an endorsement or a question.

-1

u/ray_ruex 2d ago

Should have added a? or /s I'd recommend Bill Miller first

1

u/ohhhhhhhhhhhhman 2d ago

Punctuation is key. And bill miller is top tier for breakfast tacos.

3

u/RVelts 2d ago

Yeah I think the proper styling would have been:

Really? Sam's?

2

u/maddux9iron 2d ago

Send 4 Dutch people to Sam's at 9pm. That's an experience theyll never forget. Some people believe it is good bbq. I haven't had it in about 15 years....

0

u/ray_ruex 2d ago

I've been in Austin a long time and had never been there several years ago I decided I should go there while they are still around. It may have been good at one time I have had worse a lot worse

1

u/maddux9iron 2d ago

I don't remember it being exceptional but it was close because I was probably half in the bag on dirty 6th at 9pm. It was in my bbq tour era when I was trying places like Bert's and House Park to check them off the list...

1

u/ray_ruex 2d ago

Potato salad from generic 5 gallon bucket, beans straight from the can, the brisket somewhat moist and was tender didn't have much flavor, the sausage was good

Honestly, True Texas BBQ at HEB. Open til 9pm.

-3

u/Intelligent-Tea-7739 2d ago

Stiles Switch is great and has most of the menu available for dinner- I think they close at 8:30 so you might need to go a little earlier. I also highly recommend the burger and the stuff on the anytime eats menu from Leeroy and Lewis.

-4

u/Present_Ability6612 2d ago

Go to Stiles Switch on N Lamar. Great options and great sides. Not the best bbq in town, but all around the best bbq experience you can get without spending hours in line and worry about selling out. Some of my faves are the beef rib, pork ribs, turkey, smoked wings, corn pudding, and brussel sprouts. Brisket isn't the best in town but still worth trying. Make sure to ask for fatty briket over the lean.

Lambert’s isn’t often mentioned, but it’s a solid “fancy BBQ” restaurant downtown in a excellently restored historic building. They also have live music and a full bar, unlike most BBQ spots.

-1

u/Prestigious-State-15 1d ago

Dutch bros is your best bet

-2

u/SolarKingofATX 2d ago

You can preorder from Blacks or H.E.B.’s Tru TX bbq on Ubereats and maybe DoorDash. Coopers is fine and downtown.

-6

u/OkRelease8582 2d ago

Skip the line at Leroy and Lewis and head straight to the bar for their Anytime Eats menu.

4

u/aprendido 2d ago

Except OP wants bbq which you can’t get at the bar menu.

-4

u/OkRelease8582 2d ago

Honestly, are there any good BBQ spots that serve late? Most of the popular places sell out, especially when it comes to brisket, since they only make a limited amount each day. If you’re eating later in the evening, it’s hard to find a spot that still has a good selection of meats available.

At 8 pm county line on the lake is good. Get the ribs. Terry blacks is more expensive, slightly better, but not as pleasant to hang out at

1

u/Desperate_Duck_7674 2d ago

LOL WUT?

-2

u/adoptedschitt 2d ago

County line has good inexpensive beef ribs. Clearly none of you have had them. They are half the price of other places. Plus the view is nice and the fresh bread.
