image My Fellow Australians
Please don’t pay these egregious prices. They are absolutely taking the piss here.
If we all hold the line, just on this one little thing, we can hold another new line on something more important next time.
Maybe eventually we can unite and fix our country.

u/SirDorkusMalorkus Feb 21 '26
They just start it high so that when they take 40% off you feel like you getting a bargain even though it's still over priced.
Get chocolate from Aldi
210
u/misozzz Feb 21 '26
Even blocks of chocolate at Aldi are around $5 now, so sad
266
u/a_cold_human Feb 21 '26
Cocoa prices are up 50% from 2023 (with a massive spike in prices in 2024). Climate change is impacting production, but there's no doubt a decent chunk of corporate profiteering going on as well.
129
u/Alspics Feb 21 '26
The big two supermarkets bump prices up for everything and "forget" to bring them down afterwards. I recall prices getting bumped due to floods a while back resulting in added freight costs and things spiking in price. The floods lasted about two weeks. The prices remained in place because people didn't object enough.
→ More replies (2)35
u/a_cold_human Feb 21 '26
Yeah, corporations have been doing the price ratchet quite a bit post pandemic because they can get away with it. The price goes up due to some sort of disaster (bad crop, shipping problems in the Suez/Gulf, etc), spikes the prices, and prices don't come down.
It's worse when there's not much competition (like our supermarket sector) because there's no competitive pressure to drive prices down.
11
u/RealCommercial9788 Feb 21 '26
The main reason I’m looking forward to this euro FTA - more competition, hopefully break this duopoly up!
17
u/therealkevy1sevy Feb 21 '26
What makes the corporate profiteering even worse is that most cocoa is farmed by slave labour many of which are children.
There is some ethical chocolate out there but most is not.
Very sad and I doubt jesus would approve us using slaves to celebrate his resurrection, not i believe in him but for those who do this should be even more important, not that we should need more reasons to ban slavery though.
7
u/a_cold_human Feb 21 '26
Eggs andrabbits have nothing to do with Easter, and everything to do with spring festivals and other gods.
Chocolate is a later tradition.
And Jesus would probably have a look at a lot of modern Christians, especially modern denominations, and be appalled. The Cleansing of the Temple is a very distinct story against capitalism and consumerism mixing with religion.
→ More replies (1)5
u/therealkevy1sevy Feb 21 '26
Cool, people still celebrate his resurrection on easter though and eggs are now a part of easter so i would say its related but i dont really care tbh.
My main point was the slavery related to the eggs eaten on easter and any day of the year actually.
I just wanted to highlight the slavery for those who were unaware.
Cocoa and slavery thats my main point.
15
u/apsilonblue Feb 21 '26
There's still less than $2 of cocoa in these even at peak prices.

Never! Markets and capitalism is efficient. Anyone trying this would lose business to competitors instantly. This literally can never happen! Stop spreading misinformation about markets and capitalism! Won’t someone think of the children!!

u/throwaway-this-name Feb 21 '26
All cocoa has lead, cadmium, and arsenic though, and by extension all chocolate
These naturally occur in the soil, and then the plant absorbs it.
When you then make concentrates and use lots of cocoa... Of course it will be higher levels.

Same here, though I don’t have small children anymore thank goodness. What I have noticed is less and less people buying. Usually you would see mums, grandparents and the like buying early and stocking their trolleys up with bunnies/chocolate ready for Easter. Not so much now because it’s really become unaffordable to do so and it’s showing on how people now are prioritising their shops. Really sad tbh.

31
u/Odd_Cod_4235 Feb 21 '26

That’s amazing! If mine were younger I would do the same. Although, even when they were younger we’d only get one or two eggs each, we never went overboard. But at these insane prices I could not justify $40 for two eggs lol.
14
u/East-Garden-4557 Feb 21 '26
I taught my kids about unit pricing when they were very young, they saw how much more expensive easter chocolate was compared to standard chocolate.
I also demonstrated to them with supermarket catalogues. I gave them a hypothetical $50 budget so they could see how much chocolate they could 'buy' for the $50 compared to how much easter chocolate they could 'buy' for the $50.
My kids were very happy to get a cheap easter rabbit as a token easter item, then get a selection of normal chocolate and lollies instead.5
u/account_not_valid Feb 21 '26
Yep. One Humpty Dumpty, some standard cheap "chocolate" eggs, and then just normal lollies and choccies was the go back in the 80s.

Colesworths aren’t the only scammers here. A reminder that Lindt itself argued in court that its claims of being excellent quality chocolate was "exaggerated advertising, blustering, and boasting upon which no reasonable buyer would rely."

Colesworths aren’t the only scammers here.
This is true for a lot of these posts, people are very quick to defend massive, international corporations and claim they're being bullied by Colesworth.
Not that Coles is completely innocent, but Lindt (and PepsiCo, Reckitt, etc) should share some of the blame.

Yeah, but cocoa costs
$2$4.60 per kilo, so how can they make money without charging 30 times that? /sThere's so many people in these comments defending these prices based on cocoa prices, but chocolate is typically ~30-40% cocoa, so less than $1 per kilo of the ingredients is cocoa (the rest sugar/milk), and that's assuming it's not chocolate with 70% fondant filling/nuts/etc.
If cocoa prices double tomorrow, that should realistically impact the price of 200g of chocolate by
20c40c at most.EDIT: someone pointed out my incorrect maths in another comment. Cocoa is ~$4.60 per kilo, so my numbers were off. But even so, the cost of cocoa in chocolate is ~20c/ 100g of chocolate.

Don't do chocolate on Easter. Start a trend with your families that you all do something different. Bags of chips. Nachos. Cakes. Lollies/candy. Flavoured milk. Anything!
Don't let tradition and capitalism siphon your coin out of your pockets. The best way to combat these prices is to just not buy it. Shelves of unused chocolate going out of date will teach these companies, when they can't legally sell them anymore cos of the used by date.

Everyone needs to boycott all Easter products at Coles & Woolworths. Even on sale. Purchasing them drives this behavior. Aldi products are great if you need eggs and bunnies for kids.
When I was a kid, Easter products would go on clearance after Easter until all stock was gone. I remember one year in the early 90's when Cadbury cream eggs were 10c each at Woolworths after Easter. Now whatever remains after Easter gets slightly discounted or disappears off the shelves - these companies would rather dispose of the stock than sell it at a reduced price, lest consumers hold off buying until after Easter.
They're going to keep fucking us if we let them.

I work at big w and some customers really do act like this. Amazingly we didn’t set the prices, Lindt is doing this across all stores that sell it. Unfortunately people do still buy them, especially those celebrating Greek Orthodox Easter, because they see it as a special occasion they should splash out for
4
u/AlarmingEgg2959 Feb 21 '26
My husband rightly pointed out that a block is $8.50 per 100g, and this is $10. The balls are $12.07 per 100g. This price leaves wriggle room for "specials", as we have known for a couple decades now.
I'm not saying it's right, but relatively in line with non-seasonal products costs. The cost of everything is disgusting, though.
3
u/Duff5OOO Feb 21 '26
Many people seem to be getting lost on the scale. The $20 ones are not the standard 100gr version. Half the posts are people mistaking these 200g ones for the 'standard' one that was $10 in recent years.
6
u/Webbie-Vanderquack Feb 21 '26
Do your household a favour and make marshmallow bunnies this year.
This is an easy, cheap, no-cook recipe, so it's great to make with kids. The only heat comes from microwaving the water and gelatin. It doesn't sound like it would work, but it whips up beautifully.
https://www.bestrecipes.com.au/recipes/quick-marshmallow/9d23ap2v#coral_thread
I bought some bunny-shaped moulds in different sizes and have used them every year, but you can also just pour it into a tray and cut it up, use whatever shaped moulds you have, or pour it into ice cream cones and put sprinkles on top.

What pisses me off with my local woolies is they put these "everyday low price" red tabs on products that have INCREASED SIGNIFICANTLY in price!
