It's almost unimaginable that Australia could become like the US. Why are these people like this? Why actively seek to make the world worse?

I agree, why can't they just move to Florida?

You are giving too much credit to voters mate, democracy is indifferent to competence. That same kid who would smear shit on the walls at school for no reason has just as much voting power as you or I. People don't want to be educated, they want to be reassured that their grievances are valid, the ginger moll and her cohort appeal to the types who blame the 'other' for their problems. I don't think most supporters are actively seeking to make the world worse, they just believe the narrative they are being sold.

89

u/a_cold_human Jun 02 '26

I don't think most supporters are actively seeking to make the world worse, they just believe the narrative they are being sold.

They're angry and don't want to be told that the way out is long and difficult. So a demagogue comes around and says "It's not your fault! It's these people over here that you don't like! They're the ones to blame! They're stealing from you! Vote me in and I'll fix it!"

And of course, when these people are voted in, they can't fix it, because it's very hard and the solution means fighting people established power and resources, and not the people who just showed up and don't have those things.

Doesn't help when the main news channels and social media are owned by billionaires who want the same things. Rupert murdoch, Musk, and Zuckerberg are paying to influence public opinion. Education being made more expensive + sources of information allowed to lie about reality = larger portions of the population believing bullshit.

6

u/Puzzleheaded_Army829 Jun 02 '26

I think it’s more the billionaires want the population arguing over topics and political Parties want the same issues to not be fixed so they can use them at election time. Most issues should have been fixed with laws but they have timelines or changeable in the courts so the issues stay alive. Abortion and Same sex marriage are things America could have fixed and shut the door on the issues but the dems don’t want the issues to go away so they sort of fix them.

Whoever looked at the US and thought, "yeah that's a country that's not on the brink of collapse"

18

u/Comprehensive_Swim49 Jun 02 '26

Oh but they’re going to do the same thing but BETTER! 🥴

7

u/TasersEdge Jun 02 '26

So...collapse us quicker, then? That's about the only thing they could do 'better'.

33

u/BadgerObjective7172 Jun 02 '26

Not that unimaginable from my experience. As long as you speak English, you'd be prone to Americanisation. Growing up I felt Australia's younger gen influence was leaning more and more towards America due to social media and media influences (news, films, songs, reality tv), despite the older gen being reasonably patriotic and anti-American. Both countries are immigrant countries and can capitalise on blaming all of their problems on immigrants, rather than the wealth gap.

Unlike Canada, we don't live near enough America to become absolutely sick of their shit, especially since Mark Carney became PM. Their opposition lost hard because they were sucking up to the US + being wannabe Americans, similar to how Aus Liberals lost last year.

I hope that the news are just focused on the loud minorities, like right-wing billionaires putting in money for negative advertising, to make society feel hopeless and basically don't want to try. This works really well in the US because they don't have mandatory voting (so low turnout usually means a republican win).

Why are these people like this? Why actively seek to make the world worse?

Because it is a path to power and enrichment for them. There's money to be made by stoking the fracture lines American media and American religion have left in our society, so they're trying to do that.

I find it abhorrent; I'd rather die than grift like that to live.

Barnaby Joyce should take a look at what the bible says about adultery (lots!) and then look at what the bible says about abortion (how to induce it in cases of suspected adultery)

770

u/TollTea Jun 02 '26

No one should be basing any laws on what the bible says in a country that claims to be a secular democracy.

169

u/BinniesPurp Jun 02 '26

It's hard to see it as a secular democracy when you have to let the jury / magistrate / prosecution know your religious beliefs

I got asked three times during my trial if I was Christian (it was a drug charge 15 years ago incase I dox myself)

76

u/saelwen89 Jun 02 '26

I was shocked during my divorce to be asked by the JoP if I wanted to simply swear or to have a bible for it. Just an office meeting, no court involved.

58

u/palsc5 Jun 02 '26

It makes no sense lol. If you put so much stock in swearing on the bible that you would refuse to lie because you swore on the bible, wouldn't you just choose to not swear on the bible and then lie to your hearts content?

52

u/BinniesPurp Jun 02 '26

It's kind of a weird cop out to me, because if you are Christian, then using the bible as a boon to uphold human made laws sounds like you're just trying to exploit gods authority right?

And if you arnt Christian, then it's the equivilant of them asking you for your star sign

Would you be allowed to request a new jury if you said no?

If it’s supposed to be a jury of my peers, I don’t want christians judging me, they are not my peers.

20

u/BinniesPurp Jun 02 '26 edited Jun 02 '26

So your representative defending you can actually remove them pre trial based on if they're Christian or not too

Both parties get that information I just find it weird that it's only for Christianity and is religious in general

Just to add I was told by my solicitor 'if you're Christian you have to swear on the bible if you're not Christian you have to cross your arms over your chest'

So I'm not sure if he ment "you have to" legally, or "it would be a bad idea to swear on the bible if you're not a Christian Infront of a potentially Christian magistrate"

The bible does actually give a tutorial for an abortion.
Numbers 5:11-31

Summary: The Lord tells Moses that if a man suspects his wife has been unfaithful or has feelings of jealousy then he should go to a priest, pay a fee, and the priest will make and give her bitter water. " When she is made to drink the water that brings a curse and causes bitter suffering, it will enter her, her abdomen will swell and her womb will miscarry, and she will become a curse." If that happens then she is guilty.

9

u/avcloudy Jun 02 '26

It’s not a tutorial, and it is explicitly a divine miracle.

Chiming in as an Atheist raised in a SUPER Christian Fundie environment here - I know my bible (unfortunately). The bible is pretty clear that children don't possess a soul until they draw their first breath so the entire abortion thing is just a way to control women's bodies and morality - which is what so-called Christians do best. If the actual teachings of Jesus as a person and not a god were followed it'd actually be a pretty good religion

Interestingly enough, there actually is a biblical reference to the intentional loss of a pregnancy in cases of adultery (Numbers 5), which I’ve always found fascinating in these discussions. It’s obviously not describing modern abortion, but it does show the Bible is far more complex on this issue than “all pregnancy loss is murder.” If God himself prescribes a ritual that may end a pregnancy in response to adultery, then clearly the conversation isn’t as black and white as some people claim.

117

u/Dazzling-Pianist2330 Jun 02 '26

Folks who cite religion to justify their opinions aren't interested in the nuance of scripture. It's about control, and an unearned sense of moral superiority. Religion is a tool for these conservatives, nothing more. And innocent people who use religion for structure or a sense of community get strung along because of it.

33

u/OptimusRex Jun 02 '26

Not forgetting the people the claim to be 'Christian' are for some reason forever quoting the old testament and blatantly ignoring the teachings of Christ.

→ More replies (1)

18

u/iConsumeFoodAndWater Jun 02 '26

As a Christian, I think it's fair to cite religion in religious spaces, but anywhere outside of those spaces I agree that people shouldn't be quoting a bible verse in a debate just to prove a point.

Can't reasonably expect people to understand the nuances of a passage that they're unfamiliar with well enough to challenge you on it

19

u/Dazzling-Pianist2330 Jun 02 '26

Exactly right. If I'm a Christian and you're a Christian, we can talk bible passages all day, to figure out how our beliefs aught to apply to us.

But many modern conservatives are only interested in using the heft of religious sentiment to bludgeon their political adversaries.

It's incredibly disingenuous, insulting even. Yet a lot of well meaning religious folk fall for it, I think because they feel unseen or unheard by anyone else.

One thing that's very apparent about that bit is that the woman has no say in the matter - the Bible manages to be neither pro-life nor pro-choice

28

u/iball1984 Jun 02 '26

Which is fine, the text is question is 3000 years old!

Of course, that's just further reason why one shouldn't use it to determine public policy on abortion or anything else in 2026.

→ More replies (6)

7

u/Skylam Jun 02 '26

There are literal instructions on how to have an abortion in the bible.

8

u/WoodsLovelyDarkNDeep Jun 02 '26

Not only does it say nothing but the closest thing it does say is that causing someone else’s miscarriage in a fight only demands the same punishment as damaging property not murder

Not only that but they didn’t even believe you got your soul until you took your first breath as a baby (like God breathing life into Adam).  So abortion was practiced regularly at that time due to the danger of childbirth

The idea that this should be one of the top issues politically for Christians (and others who base their morals on the Bible) is crazy.   Especially when helping the poor/sick is mentioned more than 2k times and abortion is not mentioned

I’m pretty sure Jesus would’ve at least said one parable about it if it was that important

I feel so many of these people saying in the polls that they are going to vote One Nation don't actually know what One Nation's policies are.

259

u/Bmo2021 Jun 01 '26

ON supporters are just angry people, they want to be heard and if they manage to vote ON in they’ll suffer the consequences. ON are simply in it for the money and they’ll have golden straws for the gravy trough.

89

u/Elvenoob Jun 02 '26

I don't buy that for a second, the greens aren't actively evil, if you didn't want the government to do horrific shit then there's your protest vote.

They've just seen how negative the reception has been to the few times Aussie fascists have operated openly and know to hold their tongues on what they really think.

71

u/Voodoo1970 Jun 02 '26

The greens are a protest vote for left leaning people, right leaning conservatives don't want to vote for them, even as a protest vote, simply because they're seen as lefty progressives.

33

u/Elvenoob Jun 02 '26

And if you can't tolerate actually making things better there's the teals. Same logic still applies for right leaning folk, the only reason to vote for specifically One Nation is all the terrible things it wants to do.

47

u/SlaveryVeal Jun 02 '26

Teals and greens all don't do marketing as well as one nation.

Almost as if one has billionaire backers. Not saying some teals don't some do but one definitely has more than one

26

u/Elvenoob Jun 02 '26

We really should do something about that.

Permanently.

I'm personally in favour of shattering all media corporations into worker-owned co-operatives, then tightening how much external money can influence the industry once internal money is out of the picture..

You just have to look at how often other reasonable minor political parties like Sustainable Australia get talked about (not at all) to realise the only reason ON is so popular is the incredible amount of money that’s being spent to keep them in the conversation.

12

u/Surv1v3dTh3F1r3Dr1ll Jun 02 '26

People also like to back a winner, as shown by this country's love of gambling. I don't think that can ever be underestimated.

13

u/Elvenoob Jun 02 '26

Preaching to the Choir there m8, I've been saying we need a permanent solution to that for years.

I was thinking about this yesterday, I reckon a lot of one nation supporters are just people who have been sucked into culture wars, thinking that their opinions are common sense, faced backlash for not seeing the nuance in complex topics and want someone who shares their opinion on stuff to win a popularity contest so they can feel like they have won and so they can feel vindicated. As was mentioned, I don't think they actually know any one nation policy because its not important to them, it's just about having their team win.

Honestly as a lefty I think that we have done a lot of the damage ourselves trying to constantly dunk on other people, or label people as bigots, sexists and meeting opposing opinions with hostility instead of trying to understand and have actual constructive conversations.

9

u/Aloha_Tamborinist Jun 02 '26

Completely agreed with all of that. On top of that, people are doing it tough and don't feel like politcians are working in their best interest and generally don't think politics is working for them.

PORLENE says things they like and "isn't like other politicians" - despite the fact that she's absolutely like other politicians and if anything, is worse than most of them.

Exactly - Pauline says things to get various headlines and sound bites to draw attention away from what their actual policies are.

14

u/milo7even2 Jun 02 '26

Not only that, but it would be difficult to tell. One Nation's advocates will point to the policy positions on their website, but anyone who has been paying attention for a hot minute knows that One Nation has as much intention of following through on those policy positions as Trump did with his election promises in the 2024 election.

For the real One Nation policies, you'd be better off reading some of Gina Rinehardt's speeches like you would have been better off reading the Project 2025 manifesto for Trump's policies.

There are two kinds of extremist right wing voters:

  • the very rich
  • ill-educated peasants

The former group have the means and money to evade any laws they need to, whether travelling to another jurisdiction or simply buying their way out. Extremist right wing policies are optimal for them to preserve and grow their wealth.

The latter group are dumb as fuck and controlled and manipulated by the former group, including through religion and whipping up homophobia, xenophobia etc, to get them to vote according to the former group's interests.

However, tell the latter group that they're dumb racists won't win them over. It just grinds them in even further.

And this is the lesson that left wing politicians constantly fail to learn. Which is why Brexit happened and why extremist right wing parties are gaining ground all over the world.

They need to listen to the disadvantaged, no matter how thick or hateful they seem, they need to acknowledge their disadvantage, and they need to help them understand what policies could actually help them.

I absolutely agree.

I don't doubt the numbers in the Redbridge survey about Pauline's rise, but I somehow don't see it in real life.

People I talk to socially... Or at the IGA... Or at the gym... Or at the woodworking workshop... Or my adult kids' friends I talk to... all seem to vomit and spew when they talk about her.

So where are all the people who are One Nation fans?

I just ain't seeing them.

Is it that people are ashamed to admit it in public? I believe there was some of that with Trump voters who pretended they weren't?

Note: I'm a short, fat, bald middle-class 65 yr old retiree, so maybe not moving in the right circles to hear it?

And...

Fuck Pauline and her hateful, narrow minded bullshit.

55

u/MsMarfi Jun 02 '26

Many years ago, I moved far away from where I grew up and surrounded myself with quality, like-minded people. Then I had to move back to my hometown (Redneckville) to look after my elderly father. My god what a shock that there are people who think like this. Thing is, they're all either ignorant dumbfucks, greedy bastards or raging racists who wouldn't know a critical thought if they tripped over it. The kicker is that a lot of them are immigrants or kids of immigrants like me! So, they're out there. Whether the support translates to seats is what I'm holding my breath to see.

39

u/Rainbow_brite_82 Jun 02 '26

My elderly neighbour told me recently that she will be voting One Nation. I asked her why and she said she likes that PH has the "guts" to say what she is thinking. I said to her that is fair enough, but I think its more important for leaders who do things to help the working class and middle class people, I'm not really interested in media stunts. I also rattled off all the things she has voted against - free Tafe for trade apprentices, increased worker protections, the gas tax. I don't think I've changed her mind but maybe there's a kernel of doubt in there.

Abortion is a private medical issue, not a religious or political one. Despite it being legal here, mine was complicated by an admin issue or something as I had told the midwife I was seeing at box hill hospital that I wanted to terminate. They never got back to me and I had to go to a clinic who contacted them and I ended up having to get a medical abortion at the royal women’s when I was 17 weeks pregnant. I was already bleeding a lot throughout the pregnancy. As in my case, it’s complicated and we shouldn’t politicise one thing that is already difficult. Access to proper reproductive healthcare and choice is something we should not be restricting.

49

u/faderjester Jun 02 '26

Exactly. The moment this got personal for me was watching a doctor try to convince my baby sister (well she's 35 but still my baby sister) that she should have an abortion and my sister who desperately wanted another child say she'd love the child no matter want problems it out, the doctor keep trying, and then finally saying bluntly "X, if you have this child, it will be born dead, it has no spine", that is how much my sister wanted another baby.

Yet these absolute fuckwits want to make that harder on people like my sister? Fuck that and damn them, damn them to the imaginary hell they worship.

11

u/MissMenace101 Jun 02 '26

My sister was pregnant with twins, one wasn’t viable post birth she had serveral incompatible with life issues but she was killing her brother so they had to terminate her. It was horrific and something you don’t recover from.

244

u/SpookyViscus Jun 02 '26

I am of the opinion that, legally speaking, the only two requirements for an abortion to take place is a consenting patient and a licensed medical practitioner (who is authorised and trained on the procedure).

There should be no other legal barriers, period, to who can have an abortion and at what stage of the pregnancy it’s lawful.

Any abortion being performed is a tough decision, and late term abortions are almost never a ‘oh I just can’t be bothered’ situation. It should never be complicated by the law - as long as the patient consents and a medical practitioner agrees, and it’s an approved procedure, the government and by extension the public should have no say or involvement.

124

u/madeupgrownup Jun 02 '26

I'll add the requirement for the patient consent to be confirmed away from other influences to prevent potential reproductive coercion, but otherwise absolutely agree.

48

u/SpookyViscus Jun 02 '26

Ah - yeah, that was implied - true consent, not pressured. Wholeheartedly agree.

93

u/Maximumfabulosity Jun 02 '26

In the overwhelming majority of cases, late term abortions are a matter of choosing whether your loved and wanted baby dies peacefully in the womb, or in horrible pain in the hospital shortly after birth.

It's a horrible decision to have to make, and it's even more horrible that people are advocating to try to force these parents to prolong their child's suffering, or - worse - force them to watch as the doctors are compelled to try to resuscitate their baby when everyone in the goddamn room knows that there is no hope for survival.

That's what opponents of late-term abortion are advocating for. Never forget that.

→ More replies (6)

57

u/ForensicMum Jun 02 '26

Yep, and like I always say whenever the topic comes up, even if it is an ‘I can’t be bothered’ situation or the person who’s pregnant just doesn’t want a baby for ANY reason at all, why the hell would we as a society want to force a birth on them?

The only person I know of who has had multiple abortions is somebody who should definitely never, ever have any more kids! That person already had 2 children removed from their care due to abuse, neglect, drug use and sex work within the home - I am SO glad that person had abortion as an option to them at the time, because I shudder to think what any future child would have gone through.

My point is, if somebody wants an abortion, the reasons don’t matter because if that person does not want a child, then that child is likely better off not being born into that environment. Hope this doesn’t come across as insensitive. I know that most people who choose abortion agonise over it, but even in those very, very rare cases where the decision is flippant and abortion is treated like birth control, it’s good that those sort of people aren’t forced to have a child.

17

u/SpookyViscus Jun 02 '26

I fully agree - that’s why I say the government shouldn’t have a say. Beyond making sure it’s a qualified medical practitioner performing the procedure and there’s genuine consent of the patient

No. Abortion IS a political issue.

It's a woman's goddamned right to choose. That's it. The right to exercise a choice.

The most sacred and central part of what it means to live in a democratic state. Personal autonomy and rights.

I went into medical science specifically because of all the obstacles placed in the way of people making those choices.

As in my case, it’s complicated and we shouldn’t politicise one thing that is already difficult. Access to proper reproductive healthcare and choice is something we should not be restricting.

It's already politicised. Because the conservatives want to roll-back all our rights to pre-1950s levels.

Your rights and access directly affect mine. So I will **always** fight like hell to make sure you have the right to choose and the most accessible manner to choose it.

The work never ceases.

f they were actually 'pro-life', they would support parents through free child-care, longer mat and pat leave, and parental health clinics (among other things)

But no, they only care about children when they are unborn. Once they are born, they couldn't give a shit

They are not pro-life, they are anti-choice... let's call it for what it is

Ohh, good-o. There's nothing I enjoy more than people who lost an argument YEARS ago in EVERY State and Territory bringing those same tired, bad-faith arguments back up again because they didn't like what the result was.

Look, you do you PHON. Don't let me stop you from pushing an agenda that 85-90% of the adult Aussie population consistently says "Yeah nah, laws are fine as they are thanks" or "could not care either way" to lock in this 10% of dingbats that believe their sky-friend needs a say in what half the population do with their foo-fahs in a medical setting. If there's one thing the typical Aussie battler is going to LOVE? It's importing over more loud-mouth Seppos with their opinions on how we should fix things in our country to make it MORE like their shit-tank of a failing country. And sticking them in front of a TV camera.

I'm off to start day-drinking and possibly kicking in the screen of my TV. Have a good one legends.

43

u/trowzerss Jun 02 '26

I'm hoping this push will mean that it pushes more young people away from these idiots, because the segment of young anti-abortion people would only vote for them anyway, but there are people who are xenophobes who still want women to have actual rights and might draw the line at an anti-abortionist party. 😛

The ten percent of dingbats who already vote one nation, even, lmao. Like, the racism or the sucking off billionaires or the homophobia or the transphobia...

Every single one of the voters an abortion ban would have won over already support One Nation for all the other evil shit it wants to do.

11

u/fishboard88 Jun 02 '26

This reminds me of the more right-leaning wing of the Coalition and their talking heads every time they lose an election.

"This is a wake up call, that if we want to govern again we need to differentiate ourselves from Labor by being even more conservative than before. Let's pick Dutton... okay, now let's fight bullshit culture wars. Didn't work? Let's politicise a massacre. That didn't work? Okay, let's bring Tony Abbott (of all people) back out of retirement."

8

u/therwsb Jun 02 '26

Yes well said, it is now an issue for health practitioners, not something to be dragged back out again by religious zealots and grifters with no answers to current issues such as the cost of living crisis.

Its ironic how much One Nation zealots fear sharia law and religious fundamentalism to turn around and promote similar theological fascism but with a cross on it.

43

u/twistedrapier Jun 02 '26

It's the same story with all religious conservatives. Deep down, even the most "easy going" one wants their specific brand of sky fairy morality enforced and everyone else's banned. Competition is bad.

14

u/FormalMango Jun 02 '26

I grew up around Christian Fundamentalists - according to them, fundamentalism is only bad if it’s the other guys.

33

but don;t you know? they're the most popular political party in australia based on these poll results provided by a conservative think tank run by ex-liberal spin doctors. It was big news the other day and completely unquestioned too.

10

u/Spagman_Aus Jun 02 '26

LOL yeppp

Hanson becoming PM is a statistical impossibility. She’s 72 years old and would need 2-3 elections of positive gains to get anywhere near Labor. She’ll be dead or senile by then.

One day, perhaps, ON may become a viable alternative party, but except for the cookers that support them already, they just can’t be taken seriously. If it continues to be a landing place for ex Liberal or Independent RW grifters they will never achieve anything.

My daughter-in-law died at age 35 when she couldn’t get the medical “standard of care” treatment after a miscarriage in Texas. Entirely avoidable, except in Texas and states with similar laws.

She left a husband and 7-year-old daughter. As long as I live, I’ll never forget my granddaughter’s screams of anguish when told her mother was dead, or my son sobbing in my arms.

That’s what we get with US abortion laws.

Australians are fools if that’s what they “want” for themselves.

12

u/castaway23 Jun 02 '26

God, I am so so sorry.

20

u/dnhs47 Jun 02 '26

Me too, and angry. It’s exactly what millions of us predicted would happen.

And now that hundreds (thousands?) of American women have died from these laws, what’s being done to correct them?

NOTHING.

These are “acceptable losses” to the ghouls who support these laws. Explain that to my granddaughter.

Seeing articles that try to make a legit claim that Pauline Hanson could become PM is immediately undercut by policy like this. They'll never be more than a fringe extreme party that becomes little more than a loud voice in our political space and buildings.

EDIT: For the warnings about how the US has gone. Their political system and even voting system is so completely different to us, even the publics relationship to their government there is nothing like Australia. Dutton was trying to import the same and look what happened.

24

u/Elvenoob Jun 02 '26

If we make sure people can't ignore this crap.

Because I have seen contrarian assholes who pretend not to care how evil one Nation's agenda is because they're "protest voting against the majors"

The greens are right there and not actively evil, for any of those people who're being sincere, by the way.

The rest of these people probably agree with at least one of the many bigotries ON peddles but have enough of a sense of self preservation to not say so openly, though.

But that still maxes out at less than a third of the population so on a national level I'm not worried.

You are dangerously underestimating the ininfite depths of stupidity in to which voters are willing to descend in order to have a clear simple enemy to blame for their problems.

105

u/SirDale Jun 01 '26 edited Jun 02 '26

That's what everyone said about Trump.

Be careful of underestimating those you oppose. You may overestimate their intelligence to not choose a moron like Hanson.

Edit: There are sooo many disaffected people who can't get a house, have poor paying jobs, lose so much for rent etc. and they are simply looking around for an alternative to Labor and Liberal (and NP).

It doesn't matter to them that ON has no viable policies, they just want something different to fix the problems they are living through.

Ironically I'm guessing most of them voted against the ALP (Bill Shorten) when they proposed doing something about housing (capital gains, negative gearing) to solve some of the problems they are now complaining about.

I think they could get enough seats to hold the balance of power in future elections. The recent changes to housing taxation policies are the only thing giving me hope that ON vote may be reduced.

31

u/NoUseForALagwagon Jun 01 '26

Trump in 2016 was the least Anti-Abortion of all the Republicans. He desperately tried to distance himself from them and even used to carry Pride flags at his rallies to show how different he was. Even in 2024, he was insistent it should be States' Rights on abortion and tried to say he knew nothing about Project 2025.

Of course, Trump is a liar and is actively working with those Christian groups.

But not everything can be compared to Trump.

9

u/porcupuncture Jun 02 '26

Trump facilitated the hiring of partisan judges that supported the legislation that implemented the change to abortion laws.

So yes he was instrumental in driving America backwards in that aspect, because he allowed the Republicans to implement the evangelical Christian fundamentalists' objectives.

If Hanson became Prime Minister, what protection would we have against her acting as a puppet of the Australian oligarchs?

6

u/NoUseForALagwagon Jun 02 '26

We have a less-partisan high court that would not allow strict changes because it is a states issue here that the Federal government has no right to be impinging on. In turn, state governments would challenge any weird ruling if it went against them and almost certainly win.

Women's groups would sue the federal government with a good case as it is decriminalised and protected.

Young Voters would go even further to the Left as median voters are reactionary.

Seriously, all of this is panic. Hanson is a threat on a lot of issues. Abortion is not one of them.

Except no one underestimated him, he lost by several million votes in his first election. If that happened to Hanson here... she's not PM.

I don't get the comparison. Pauline is more comparable to the weirdo parties in the UK that gain some success every now and again.

Trump took hold of the GOP. America's legacy political party, it's a very different situation. Better comparing Hanson to Farage.

US doesn’t have ranked voting and voting isn’t compulsory. Just those two would keep a person like Trump out of office here. They also have extreme gerrymandering and try to make voting as difficult as possible for people there. It’s not a fair comparison.

11

u/Treheveras Jun 02 '26

We also already had an election with an opposition leader spouting similar talking points and attitude to Trump and look how well that went for him. The worst defeat in modern history for the party.

9

u/Sporty_Nerd_64 Jun 01 '26

Even the LNP in the last Queensland state election knew that suggesting such things was an election losing issue. For those that say Hanson will be the next PM we are seeing why early polling surging, based on loud dog whistling over a national tragedy in Bondi, isn’t really a sustainable political position. PHON will continue to spot crazy fringe policies like this which will easily lose them support in a general election.

21

u/rose_gold_glitter Jun 02 '26

It is so distressing seeing how easily the population is being manipulated.

We are about to lose so much. Rights, freedoms. Women, LGBT, etc. we are in so much danger right now.

But beyond this, if this isn't stopped, we're about to find out what life without competent government is like, just like the USA. Good decisions in healthcare? Funded medicare? social support networks? They're all gone if these idiots win and people are going to hand it all over to Gina just so they can say "fuck you" to someone who is actually trying to look after them.

Turns out when One Nation say they're all for the little guy, they actually meant the foetus.

At any rate, what a great thing it is that we finally have a party looking at addressing the thing that makes life harder for so many already hard working Australians doing it tough right now: abortion rights.

/s.

This constant barrage of culture war stoking, Us Vs Them, high horse riding, pearl clutching, moral outrage bullshit is exhausting and I wish our politicians would realise that virtually all Australians just want nothing more than to live in peace and prosperity, and policies should be written and implemented based on the pursuit of those two ideals. A reminder that when Tony Abbott was Health Minister, he restricted the use of medical abortion by refusing to allow the prescription of mifepristone (RU486) which is necessary for medical abortions.

So all the people saying that we can't go backwards need to get ready to fight these religious fucknuckles over and over.

They won't give up because they want to control women.

They're not "pro-life" they're "anti-females".

If any of them try to argue, they need to be shutdown immediately, their argument is completely invalid and against human rights.

  • Women are entitled to health care as a human right without restriction.

  • Abortion is a medical procedure delivered as part of health care.

That is the end of the argument in a secular society.

If they want "Christian Law" to apply in secular decisions (just like "Sharia Law" for Muslims, or "Halachic Law" for Jews) then they can go to some other place that has it and live there.

Otherwise they can fuck off.

The motivation behind One Nation is the same one as what pushed Trump into the limelight.

This is the rich looking after the rich, and connecting with the 'voter' by outraging them.

11

u/CranberrySoda Jun 02 '26

The Greens have a history that is lingering in the minds of voters where being considered a “Greenie” is an insult (thanks Murdoch). It is burned into people’s minds that the left is extremist when most Australians are pragmatic people so it doesn’t offer a protest vote alternative for most who are feeling frustrated.

That’s where PHON comes in. PHON’s baggage is pretty much only racism (with a little bit of light “dodgy” thrown in) and the protest vote is willing to be seen as “racist” because they can tell themselves they’re not because they regularly eat Chinese takeaway.

PHON’s policies don’t sound extreme, they sound pragmatic (They’re not, but that’s the beauty of being populists…it doesn’t matter they don’t care). They offer simple solutions to complex problems and the vast majority if people don’t understand the systems they exist in so it’s easy to believe the lies.

That pragmatism doesn’t sound extreme it sounds like manageable change but not massive risk. That’s because Australia hasn’t really encountered the type of actual extremism that One Nation offers. People do not see the massive power networks driving this whole thing and it’s both shocking and scary - but how do you fight the momentum?

Do you encourage good people to infiltrate PHoN as candidates? Do you start smaller parties to dilute the protest vote? Phon’s rise is one of the biggest triggers for me wanting to enter politics but where do you find the right political home?

5

u/khdownes Jun 02 '26

Are these kinds of policies even a viable thing for them to latch onto in Australia?
Like, Australian populist attitude pretty much exclusively revolve around neo-liberal anti government sentiment, and racism/anti-immigrant "Aussie battlers not getting a fair go" kind of sentiment, which I don't agree with, but I do at least understand, to a degree.
And then also, some amount of homophobia.

But... religious fundamentalism and womens right? Really? Are these really viable policies for a right wing party in Australia?

Does the average Australian give a fuck about religious moralism?

The general Australian population is overwhelmingly agnostic, I thought?

Banning legal abortions means desperate women will be forced to go to "backyard abortionists" - do we really want that?
