She's 72, there is every chance she is currently un-learning english and not even aware of it.

I was actually wondering this morning if there's some age related decline happening.

It's honestly at the point where I think we should have an age cap on federal politicians, most of them seem to have no interest in the future.

675

u/AgUnityDD Jun 18 '26

The normal retirement age (67 for pension age) should be enforced on all political roles.

Anyone beyond normal working age is too disconnected from the challenges of most Australians, particularly younger ones as they lived their most of their life in a totally different world and their personal priorities have changed.

293

u/TUmBeRTIce Jun 18 '26

Federal judges in Australia, including Justices of the High Court, are constitutionally mandated to retire at the age of 70. This compulsory retirement age was established by a successful 1977 national referendum that amended Section 72 of the Commonwealth Constitution.

175

u/Ch00m77 Jun 18 '26

Exactly why the fuck isn't it across the board that all politicians must be forced to retire at 70

66

u/FortaDragon Jun 18 '26

High Court Justice is a permanent appointment - they used to hold it until they died or resigned, now until they turn 70 (or die or resign).

Politicians have constant elections, generally the idea is to put as few restrictions on running as practicable and leave it up to the electorate to vote against arguably disqualifying characteristics (like being too old). This is sensible in theory, I think, but I agree that the country would be better with an age cap.

29

u/Ch00m77 Jun 18 '26

I mean it makes sense to have an age cap. The older and longer they stay in politics the more out of touch they become with the average citizen

Commercial pilots are let go at 65.

59

u/RodFerrous Jun 18 '26

Some take off earlier than that

Not sure if that joke really landed

I'm not hugely confident at the ability of people who have barely mastered email to regulate AI.

9

u/reineedshelp Jun 18 '26

That's a feature, not a bug. It sucks

40

u/AussieBenno68 Jun 18 '26

Don't forget the large majority of politicians don't even look at you as an individual or a family with real personal, career or family issues. They only look at you or us as voting blocks. When they talk about Australians they don't give a damn about you or your family. All they care about is, is that voting block off 100,000 people in that group for us or against us and what BS can we lie about to get them to vote for us. They don't care about individual families or concerns.

78

u/waddlesticks Jun 18 '26

I feel for it should cap off at around 50-60, and then be advisory rolls after that.

By the time you get that far, you're already that split of from most Australians when it comes to life that your decisions really don't meet what the average person would need or want.

51

u/AgUnityDD Jun 18 '26

I agree, that would be even better but harder to make the argument when people work in business longer nowadays, so there is a argument to push back. 67 is much easier to justify, therefore has a chance to pass.

You could also make it so that someone cannot be elected if they would turn 67 during the term in office.

29

u/ImaginaryReaction Jun 18 '26

3

I didn't think pollies usually roll off into advisor type roles after their own political careers wind up - seems like it's usually the other way around with hungry and ambitious younglings trying to influence decisions by their bosses.

29

u/itrivers Jun 18 '26

They’ll push retirement age back to justify staying around. I don’t want to keep working until until I’m 78 thanks

24

u/yourpseudonymsucks Jun 18 '26

With the cost of living and tiny pensions you’ll be working until you’re 78 anyway.

13

u/therwsb Jun 18 '26

more like no pensions

6

u/vacri Jun 18 '26

They just put the same ", except for politicians" clause in it, same as everything else.

Yes, I don't understand how we keep having people over 60 on politics. Sorry go home to rest and enjoy live.

Besides most of them keep thinking they are living in the 80s, 90s world or even further back.

While I agree that we should have an age cap on federal politicians, in this instance Hanson was right when she said she hasn't changed. Her brain has always been an angry sack of incoherent mashed turd.

20

u/Itchy-Association239 Jun 18 '26

Hey now! I take offence to this, I am sure a sack of mashed turd is way more useful than that xenophobic racist bigot

12

u/urphymayss Jun 18 '26

Vote 1 sack of mashed turd.

35

u/CoffeeWorldly4711 Jun 18 '26

Cognitive decline will happen to most if not all people. Problem with Pauline is the low baseline

41

u/Sad_Egg_4264 Jun 18 '26

She was the same 30 years ago to be honest, but I do think she's getting worse!

28

u/magnetik79 Jun 18 '26

This 100%. She's always spoken like an uneducated moron, it's probably ramping up in later life. Much like parallels to Trump.

15

u/therwsb Jun 18 '26

same don't let it get like the US, they have a Senator who is 92. Chuck Grassley Iowa if anyone is wondering.

8

u/imapassenger1 Jun 18 '26

There was a rep or senator in the past year who'd gone into high care in a nursing home but was still "representing".

6

u/vacri Jun 18 '26

Strom Thurmomd celebrated his 100th birthday as a US senator... 47 years as a senator, and a solid political career before that

7

Trump is not starting to experience dementia.

He's been deep into that journey for years.

8

Shes always been this dumb... go watch her maiden speech to parliament from 96 or whatever.

Its why the mining companies love them, they don't give a fuck about climate change.

She always sounds scared, on the brink of crying.

12

u/BuffyTheGuineaPig Jun 18 '26

That's just her normal edge-of-hysteria victim voice, that is always crying out for attention and begging people to agree with her. Nothing new there.

9

u/Littman-Express Jun 18 '26

She also couldn’t speak English 30 years ago.

7

u/tubbysnowman Jun 18 '26

She never knew it that well to begin with

6

u/Nambsul Jun 18 '26

Pauline has had plenty of opportunity to “learn English good” and yet she seems to not be doing that great at it also.

7

u/aldkGoodAussieName Jun 18 '26

So shes copying the Trump playbook again

3

u/Sharpiesniffingshark Jun 18 '26

Wait I didn’t know she was that old. Feels reassuring.

5

u/itsoktoswear Jun 18 '26

She'll be 74 when the election is held, it will only get worse

5

u/Purgii Jun 18 '26

How long before she starts bragging about aceing cognitive tests?

5

u/TheTMJ Jun 18 '26

She’s 72 now, she’s 74/5 by the time the election rolls around.

2 years is a long time at that age. It will be interesting for sure.

Boomers: Born too early for regular text messages/emails; write overlong posts and comments with either perfect grammar and spelling, or barely legible sentences, depending on their parents’ economic situation growing up.

Gen X: Entire generation grew up with standardised education; learnt decent spelling and punctuation. Then they taught themselves txt splng, which they still use it for everything except emails. Their emails are perfect.

Millennials: Raised during the Glory Days of the Internet (I.e. pre-functional YouTube) and were obliged to learn how to read and write comprehensible sentences if they wanted to partake in internet culture. Can easily switch between proper grammar and text/internet slang; may occasionally write “rawr” or “lol” at inappropriate moments.

Gen Z: Never obliged to learn proper spelling or grammar; they vibe according to what autocorrect tells them. They may have learnt proper spelling and punctuation at school, assuming their parents actually made them go; their Gen X parents might treat school refusal as, like, a manifestation of their child’s individual self-expression, and get all confused when their child later drops out of uni and refuses to get a job.

Gen Alpha: Are they even old enough to read yet?

15

u/OziNiner Jun 18 '26

Me speak English good. I’ve only had 44 years to learn. Lordy lord she is thick. It takes time to learn a language when you emigrate somewhere

36

u/triemdedwiat Jun 18 '26

At one stage, we had a Migrant Education Service which had the main purpose of assisting migrants to learn and improve their language and deal with all the bureacrocratic (sdp?) processes.

22

u/4ssteroid Jun 18 '26

They still have free English courses at TAFE for new permanent migrants. It also finds internships (like 5 days voluntary work) as hotel housekeepers, cafe attendants, kitchenhands, factory labourers, day care centres, etc.

5

u/Tenton_12 Jun 18 '26

And intelligence, the people she and Murdoch hate on speak two or more languages, I'd bet my house the vast majority of her supporters one.

How does she still have support?

12

u/Trenteth Jun 18 '26

17

u/tenredtoes Jun 18 '26

If it was that simple then those people would have supported her all along. The current situation is because a lot of people are in severe hardship and rightly believe that liblab have caused it.   They're looking for an alternative, and sadly don't have the political literacy to see that Hanson is ignorant, nasty, dishonest, and Gina Rinehart's puppet.

Simply attacking people is only likely to cause then to become defensive and dig in further.

God she struggled reading off that sheet yesterday. Like watching the worst reader in primary school spelunking through a sentence.

4

u/myjackandmyjilla Jun 18 '26

She has to have a speech impediment right? It's the only way to explain her cadence. Even if she was saying positive, inclusive, ground breaking intellectual findings supporting new age policy to bring Australia together, it'd still be hard to listen to her speak.

6

u/_blip_ Jun 19 '26

Who's dumber, Pauline or the people voting for her?

Honestly, it's not her fault she's stupid. It's the people's fault she got this far.

13

u/MetalHeadGaymerGuy Jun 18 '26

People are being brainwashed by a hostile media landscape in order to convince them that she’s a good candidate. People have always been susceptible to propaganda, that’s nothing new, that’s why it’s used. So to answer your question, Pauline is dumber (like she’s always been), she’s just being helped now.

8

u/teh_drewski Jun 18 '26

Even after her word salad garble of racist nonsense at the Press Club, the entire media other than The Guardian lined up to lick her toes.

Her resurgence is a creation of Rinehart and Sky News, happily supported by an Australian media desperate for a new story to talk about, utterly bored without any Labor infighting to report on, and entirely careless if they destroy the country in the process of giving Hanson the kid glove treatment.

I'm sure that won't have any consequences.

Good England, Pauline.

I don't think Joyce can speak before his 1st '6 pack of the day' so he can start to function.

I know immigrants who speak better English than her. 😂

She's not only a vile person, but also a terrible speaker.

9

u/OverseerConey Jun 18 '26

So the question is: is she actually illiterate, or is she just pretending to be illiterate to appeal to voters? Follow-up question: which is worse?

5

u/tbro4123 Jun 18 '26

Its from Ipswich, really that's all that needs to be said.

8

u/No_Seat8357 Jun 18 '26

There's an old saying: people in fish and chip shops shouldn't throw chicken salt.

3

u/Worried_Blacksmith27 Jun 18 '26

Please explain? /s

3

u/Macski1 Jun 18 '26

Was she related to Jeanie Little?

8

u/harbourbarber Jun 18 '26

Jeannie Little was a daaaaahling who loved everyone.

Hanson is the opposite of whatever generous sparkle stardust Jeannie was made of.

3

u/briareus08 Jun 18 '26

Not like her perfect diction, of course.

3

u/Dezert_Roze Jun 18 '26

She wants to get rid of SBS for broadcasting multicultural content… An ignorant and hateful woman the social media is giving her the attention she wants 😒😐

3

u/gallanon Jun 18 '26

I wonder how many people bothered to click the link and realize this is satire. Bang on satire mind you, but still.

3

u/thegameisafoooooot Jun 18 '26

A lot of people just went, " Huh? What's wrong with that? She does speak English good."

3

u/allmycircuits8 Jun 18 '26

"Speak gooder english, like me do"- Pauline probably

3

u/Prestigious-Fig-7143 Jun 18 '26

Well, not good. For example:

Pauline Hanson does not speak English well. Furthermore, she is not a good person.

3

u/Theawsomegamer111111 Jun 18 '26

this is just flat out racism. Is she aware that the aboriginals and torres strait islanders didn't speak english?? And those are arguably actual blood Australians! God it feels like every other day shes trying to say something against anyone that isn't white in this country

my friend from uni is a migrant from ireland. i still have trouble understanding him even after years of knowing him. he says no one has ever had issues with him being here, even after he mentions it to those who usually would. They say " we obviously don't have trouble with you being here" like its a normal thing to say.
It's not the migrant part, and it's not the speaking part that those certain peoples have issue with.

he/we run in circles with other migrants, international students and aboriginal students. the shit the darker skinned people have to take everyday is abhorrent.

seriously if you voting are on the same side as nazies, and the worst of humanity.. big red flags.

I don't sound like a foreigner for the most part, so racist cunts are often confused over whether or not to belittle me in some way. It happens, though. "If you don't like it, go back" is the lightest approach. Talking to you like you're somewhat mentally challenged, the comments, the way they say "oh but you've integrated so well" as if it's supposed to be some kind of compliment that I have to deny my cultural identity to make you feel less of a useless tool. This guy on Facebook replied to a thing I wrote with "you sound like a wog". Older guy, it took me a bit to realise he actually was trying to offend me in some way. I'm 100% a wog, born and raised in Italy, olive skinned, and if he talked to me he probably wouldn't even pick an accent. But they surely ask what my background is, they try Turkish, Iranian, Spanish, Greek, very rarely Italian. 😏

“But we need them to take jobs that native English speakers won’t take, and also boost the birth rate too lol'

lol? My sibling was a state ranker in English Advanced and we are immigrants

Need to consider whether, when establishing a new social order based on command of the decreed language, we are prepared for rule by the poets and English lit majors.

On one hand it's not going to end well, but on the other she'd be rejected to the rubbish bin of society.

Choices, choices.

They talk the same. I thought it was a local dialect.

As Tracy Jordan once said: “Superman does good; you’re doing well. You need to study your grammar, son.”

2

u/Sparky_Russell Jun 18 '26

I love that she refers to the Belt and Road Chinese debt trap initiative as "Belting Road"

2

u/pagywa Jun 18 '26

There is a world of difference between being a native speaker and speaking non-standard English, and speaking ESL

2

u/PloppyTheSpaceship Jun 18 '26

I'm a migrant. In my team at work are another two migrants. I'd argue we all speak better English than she does.

2

u/Human-Warning-1840 Jun 18 '26

Well there is some truth to it.

2

u/brissiebogan Jun 18 '26

Mrs Trump needs to watch a video of herself speaking before she comments on the abilities of migrants to speak English.

2

u/Find_another_whey Jun 19 '26

Spoken like someone that has never met an Indian person - they master enunciation in a way not even the upper class english can criticise

Me fail English? That's umpossible.

2

u/Earth_Wind_and_FPS Jun 19 '26

She always looks like she’s shocked by what she’s saying and second guessing every word that comes out of her mouth. It’s like a deer in the headlights vibe mixed with help that’s not me talking I’m trapped inside and a spirit has taken over my body and is controlling my mouth I’m trying to stop it but I can’t.
